Rating: Summary: What you may wnat to know Review: It is needless to say how great this book is. It covers almost every possible topics for beginner and is very interesting reading. However, there are few things you may want to know:1. The author sometimes scatter important notes of same topic in different section and never repeat. You want to read this book carefully and word by word. 2. Some topics are not very detail for a beginner. For example, the medical treatment for desease dont not cover the appropriate dosage or treatment time. For filtration system, it does not recommand which type of filter capacity is suitable for certain size of aquarium. 3. Many spices of fish and invertabrates have no picture in this book to help you identify them 4. This book is a must for any one who just started a marine aquarium but may not be enough for experienced aquarist Overall, I still give this book 5 star for giving so much experienced advices that my marine aquarium is finally sucessful.
Rating: Summary: Buy This One Next! Review: Thinking of getting into the saltwater aquarium hobby? Do not buy anything until you have read this book cover to cover! You will be sorry if you don't. By applying the principles in this book, you will have much greater success at the venture. You will save a lot of money and spare the lives of many fish. But first, buy and read The New Marine Aquarium by Michael S. Paletta. It's a great starting point. Then read this one and give this great hobby a go. Being a marine aquarist is a great responsibility. Most marine aquarium fish are wild-caught. We have a responsibility to choose only those can thrive in captivity and are not endangered. Beyond that, we have an obligation to properly care for the animals we have assumed stewarship for. This book makes that clear and it will welp you achieve this.
Rating: Summary: An excellent all-around book for marine aquarists. Review: This book goes much deeper into the why's and how-come's of keeping a marine aquarium. Not only does the author explain the reasons behind his recommendations and personal choices, he also explains why others have made different choices. More than just a picture book, yet the pictures are enough to interest those who do not keep an aquarium.
Rating: Summary: Great for beginner marine aquarists Review: This book is broke down into simple easy to understand theories of how to keep marine aquariums in the home. It covers from step-up, to feeding, disease, and treatment. He gives you brief summaries, pictures, and tells you how to pick quality specimens for your tank.
Rating: Summary: Waste of time Review: This book is for those hobbyists that really just started out and have no clue what they are doing. I like to call them "fish killers." If you have successfully kept a single goldfish then you might not need this childrens book. The one thing I will say about this book though is it is easy to comprehend, which goes without saying seeing as it was written by someone with the mental wits of a four-year-old. Leave it alone.
Rating: Summary: Great for Beginner Hobbyists Review: This book is terrific, it gives you the type of fish and esplains their behavior, environment, whether they are agressive or non-agressive, and also if they can be simulated into an aquarium. I am very pleased with this purchase, and it is helped my husband and I as beginners just learning about marine aquariums. It also suggests how to integrate a new fish by doing little tricks. It is definitely a must have for new marine aquarist just learning about the hobby. Also, do not let anyone discourage you if you would like to begin this hobby, it is trial and error, but when you have a handbook to guide you through, you will pick up little things very quickly.
Rating: Summary: Great book for a beginner! Review: This book provides an excellent step-by-step outline of setting up a marine tank. There are guides to setting up fish-only or reef tanks and the different steps in setting up each. This is not a book for an advanced aquarist, but a great beginner book. I recommend this book to people who are interested in salt water tanks and have maybe worked with fresh water and are trying to make the next leap into the marine world. The species identification section is a little wanting (not enough pictures and not enough ratings as far as compatibility or reef safeness,) but I would buy this book as a set-up guide and buy a different book on species identification.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book Review: This book should be one of the "must haves" for a beginning to intermediate reefkeeper, or for an experienced person setting up a new system. It's well written and kept me reading it voraciously. It gives a great overview of different animal types and ways to keep marine creatures humanely. I am extraordinarily pleased with this book.
Rating: Summary: Map for the Novice Review: This book was very helpful to me when I was setting up my very first saltwater tank. I've had experience with aquariums for years and this was an endeavor I was uncertain of. The book gives options, compares systems and is a great reference for types of fishes. I recommend highly that if you are thinking about a saltwater/marine/reef aquarium, start here.
Rating: Summary: Comprehensive, covers what you need to know. Review: This is a great book to get you started. Most topics are covered in an easy to understand context. In-depth discussions about irrelevant topics are left out, although you will gain a greater understanding from this book much moreso than the average beginner book. It explains differences between fish only systems, fish & invertebrate systems, and reef systems and gives you all the knowledge you need to get started and maintain the system of your choosing. Although specific in-depth discussions are not found here as in other books I've read (i.e. books by Martin Moe who tends to elaborate on inpertinent information which may be of interest to advanced marinists), this book contains the most USEFUL information in one place. Pictures are great--very colorful and and helpful in some instances. Also, the author of "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" is quite concerned about the environmental impact of specimen collection on our coral reefs, and lays out an outlook that all of us should adhere to. I would definitely recommend this book to all but the most experienced who keep a salt water system.
