Summary: Excellent book
Review: I would recommend this book for any first time dog owner. It had easy to understand chapters with short, to the point recommendations about everything from potty training to obedience training. My 12 year old daughter was able to read and understand the book. There are many short stories off to the sides of each page that give real life examples for obedience etc. Great book!

Summary: A must-have for every new dog parent
Review: A very easy read, great photos. Which was helpful for me as I often had one hand on the book and the other on my puppy.

Summary: A Training Manual for Humans
Review: Groucho Marx said: "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." Dogs have been our companions since the beginning of time. Yet, their natural behaviors can ruin your relationship with your dog, your neighbor, with other people and other dogs. Every time I reached that point of ruined relationships with our beagle, I went back to Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson's book and discovered the joy of having my beagle again. Best book around to train humans and their dogs. Tips include: housebreak puppies and adult dogs, train them through games, prevent aggression, end annoying habits and have them return to you no matter what they are doing. A must read for the frustrated and those who what to avoid frustration.

Summary: My Bible for the first 6 months!!
Review: This book was and still is my bedtime reading while raising my puppy. Especially in the first month, I would have gone *crazy* without this book. It has a wonderful section which explains your pups behavior and actions...it is a god-send for anyone who's never had a dog before. It sounds elementary, but it was nice to have an expert give you an idea of how much to feed your dog and when, what the best time for neutering/spaying is and tactics for how to "troublshoot" bad behavior. Best of all, it teaches you how to "think" like your dog.

Summary: A Must Have for Any Dog Owner
Review: I am a breeder of beagles and give this book to every new puppy purchaser. It becomes their Bible almost. Great reading, easy to understand, easy to follow. I consider this book a "Must Have".

Summary: Before you know it, you'll be looking for it, get it.
Review: Hey, listen to me, when I got a pup, i had hardly a slight idea on what to do, how to train it, look after it, etc. So, my mom bought me this book called "Good Owners, Great Dogs". I refused to read it, but before I knew it, I was searching for it all over the place at home. When I finally found it, I took it to my room, read it, learned it, and put it back where I had found it. The next day mom saw me training the pup, taking it for a walk, bathing it, taking it to the vet for vaccinations, and all that. Mom was surprised all right. So she asked me how I knew so much on dogs. I had no option and so I told her that I had read the book she had bought for me. So, trust me, get this book and in less than a week, you'll know how to handle a pup or a dog.

Summary: everyone dog owner needs this book
Review: I truly believe that it's a sin to get a dog and not give it any obedience training. Dogs are of a pack nature and someone must always be the leader of the pack. If you aren't designated, they will designate themselves.Dogs need to know who's in charge. They're happier that way when they know their boundaries and what they can and cannot do. They become true friends, yet with you being the friend in charge. This book is very informative. Brian Kilcommons was taught by Barbara Woodhouse. One of the greatest dog trainers of all times. He shows you how to teach you dog obediance in a very firm, yet sensible, humane,(no hitting)way, yet not a"namby's pansy" and ineffective way, that I've seen with some other dog training programs. We brought home a big untrained dog from the SPCA who, while we were away for the day, literally ripped our home to pieces. He wouldn't do one thing we told him and I thought we had made a big mistake with this HUGE dog and would never be able to control him.I wanted to bring him back. My daughter suggested this book. Within ONE WEEK this dog was doing almost everything we told him to and he was happy doing it! He never touches ANYTHING of ours now. He waits politely at the door when he wants to go out. He used to knock me over trying to be the first one to reach the door. He won't cross the threshold of the open door unless you say it's okay. (Comes in handy if the police ever show up at your door), because they will shoot any dog that runs at them. In play or in aggressiveness. He used to run all over the house to avoid a bath, tearing it up in the process. Now, when I say 'It's bathtime he walks down the hall, into the bathroom and climbs into the tub, all by himself! He used to snatch his dog toys out of our hand biting us accidently in the process. Now, he waits nicely and sits and when you do hand him the ball, he takes it ever so carefully by the side of his teeth so he won't accidently bite us. The list goes on and on. Some people teach their dogs the nasty habits and aggressivenenss and maybe don't realize that THEY are the ones responsible for the dog bad behavior. Brian Kilcommons explans this and shows you how to correct it. Even older dogs have broken bad habits with his program. You can see he truly loves dogs. They are his life and his book and video is a joy to have. My niece has a great Dane who is a horror. She's even been to obediance school. but, they don't enforce any of the training at home. The dog is the boss of the house and knows it. She does what she wants and she's NOT a joy for their family to be around and they admit it. We wouldn't trade our dog now for a million bucks. I have recommended this book to them. I also have the video with the same title. With both book and video them in hand and the firm resolve to stick with it, there is no reason why anyone should have a dog that is a "holy terror". Windyrr2@aol.com

Summary: Good Book by Great Dog Trainer and Lover
Review: You can tell this guy is good at dog training and has passion for his work.

Relays info using cases in his biz and his own dog training experience. Uses a correction technique which is simple conceptually to grasp and consistently implement.

We have used this with success, especially turning to problem areas, such as attacking guests when doorbell rings, neighborhood kids ride by on bikes, etc. His advice works.

Highly recommended. Good accompanying photos.

Summary: The Best
Review: I have owned many dog training books over the years, but this one is the most user friendly, fun-to-read, comprehensive of all....totally sensible. Luckily I got it just as I got my present dog almost 7 years ago, and it made training him so much easier and, frankly, a pleasure. I recommend it highly.

Summary: I wish I could give 6 stars!
Review: I've occasionally given 5-star reviews to other books, but none of them are close to being as good and IMPORTANT to their respective field as this book. Without this book, my rescued dog would never have adjusted so easlily into his new home.

When I decided to get a my first dog, I needed a good reference book. Luckily, I had read Good Owners, Great Cats and had loved it. So choosing this was a no-brainer. At the same time, I bought two other dog training/reference books and got five or six from the library. Brian's book was the most informative, fun and easy book to read. It covers all that one must know for responsible dog ownership - general training, health issues, dealing with problems, and (most importantly) understanding your dog through its body language.

If you are looking specifically for advanced training, you may want to supplement this book with something else. But the casual dog owner needs nothing else.
