Rating: Summary: This book is going to change our lives! Review: I'm reading Good Owners, Great Dogs cover to cover before I make any more mistakes. I wish I had read it while our terriers were still alive, but our 2 retired greyhound racers will greatly benefit from our newly discovered communication skills. Even for someone with no interest in training, this book would provide valuable information on the thought process of our best friends. I would love to take one of Mr. Kilcommons' classes.
Rating: Summary: Good Book, Great Trainer! Review: I'm a Veterinary Technician, thus get many questions about puppy training and see a number of behavioral "problems waiting to happen". Brian's book and The Art of Raising a Puppy by The Monks of New Skete are the top two books I recommend owners to read. Both books are quick reads -- filled with easy-to-apply positive reinforcement training techniques and give the "whys" behind the behavior.I've seen Brian in action -- he's a high-energy trainer and an entertaining speaker. Within two minutes, he had a 6-month old puppy he'd never seen before following him on leash, watching his every move, and obeying commands in a heartbeat, all done with positive reinforcement. This dog barely followed his owner and would not obey commands until told 3-4 times. I walked away from his seminar with a lot of practical information I could reapply at the vet clinic and at home.
Rating: Summary: I love this book . It has all the info. a dog owner needs. Review: This book is the ultimate book on dog training it has from selecting a puppy, training it, careing for an old dog, to dealing with having your dog pass away. I'm only 10 but I read this book twice last year before I got my puppy. Last summer I got a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy and I used all the methods in the book to train her. Now she is a very well behaved dog that is turning 1 in six days. I recommend this book to everyone.
Rating: Summary: love it been Very helpful on many occasions Review: I love this book, use it all the time and recomend it to everyone
Rating: Summary: It's like literary candy ... Review: The book is a pure joy. Browsing is such fun. The layout puts all you need, usually, on a two page spread. How easy and obvious it makes my dog, now that I know the way he thinks. Thanks for the treat and the appoarch. Praise works wonders. I wonder if our bosses know this?
Rating: Summary: It all made perfect sense after reading this book... Review: It was like the parting of a thick fog after reading this book, all of the failed attempts of successfull dog ownership stoped once I read this work. Owning a dog was like having a foregien exchange student from Mars living with me. This broke the encryption that was the barrier between the perfect, healthy relationship between dog and owner. The author could not have made it any more comprehensive and clear than in this book. Now I am the authority of dog behavior in the neighborhood. Taking ownership of a dog without reading this book is like buying a car without a owners guide, a very very high maintainance foreign car with no familiar guages or operations. This is a great gift for anyone you may know going into dog ownership. A must, must have!
Rating: Summary: This is the book I buy for all my friends Review: I train my own dogs for AKC obedience and my friends frequently ask me for help with their pets. This is the book I give them first. It's clear, amusing, practical and Brian really cares about you and your dog. Make this training book the first one on your pet's shelf.
Rating: Summary: This book is just what I was looking for. Review: Brian Kilcommon's book Good Owners Great Dogs has come to my rescue. The language is clear and straight forward. He helps the reader to understand what is going through the dogs mind as we stand yelling at them to come to us. The instructions on how to teach commands from the simple to the more complex are so clear it is difficult not to get it right. He also helps us understand the proper use of voice tone and hand signals and collars ( I learned the way I was using the choke chain could have severly injured my dogs) and makes it clear change won't happen overnight. Not for us or the dog. His tips on feeding, grooming, play toys etc., etc are all helpfull. I saw a change in my dogs the next day. The only information it is missing is how to train two dogs at the same time to walk beside you.
Rating: Summary: Thank you Brian Kilcommons !!! Review: This book is "Slap your head simple!". Finally, I understand why my dog does what he does and how and why I confuse him. My once crazy dog is now calm (well calmer) and well-behaved. We are both happier.
Rating: Summary: Yeah, what they said. :-) Review: A well-written, entertaining book, with excellent training advice-- even long-time dog owners might pick up something new. Highly recommended.
