Rating: Summary: All Time Classic Review: Once you finish this book, it is like letting go of something very dear to the world. I'm not saying this book is like the Bible, but its message and its amazing story line draws us into the world of each individual character that Monsieur Hugo described so beautifully. It's a long vignette of stories that all leads to one great man - Jean Valjean. By the end, you realize that YOU are JEAN VALJEAN. YOU went through that whole miserable life he went through. YOU were the character of the story and the storyteller. There's a special line in the book: "Love each other...always. There's scarcely anything else in the world, but that: to love one another." No matter what, never ever forget this book.
Rating: Summary: A masterpiece. Revolution and romanticism together. Review: It is a masterpiece of the universal literature. How Victor Hugo tellus about the french revolution and all the new ideas and concepts which brought it to all of us. The life of the characters with all their problems and neccessities, the amazing way to describe the character circumtances and their internal thoughts (in and out at the same time). After reading this book you will not be the same and you'll never see in the same way all the needed people, specially children. I encourage you to start reading this book. I'll tell you that after 3 pgs you won't be able to quit. Best regards to all readers.
Rating: Summary: The best book ever write! Review: I have read 3 times this book, and I think that it's the best ever wrote. Each characters are three dimensional. This book is very sad, but beautiful. Read it, even if it's very long.
Rating: Summary: The greatest book ever written Review: This book encompasses human glory, sorrow, and tragedy and turns them into a philosophical marvel. From Hugo's views of the perfectability of man to his frank views on humanity in general this is a fascinating book. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone with the least bit of interest in philosophy, great literature, or a fan of Victor Hugo. I am convinced that this book is one that is easy to live by in its implicit meaning and is probably better written and more organized than the Bible itself.
Rating: Summary: Wow... Review: Absolutly wonderful. I just wish i could read French, so i could do my own translations. Most of the time i just rush through books. not this one. its too good!
Rating: Summary: I AM 11 YEARS OLD, AND I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN! Review: This book is one of the greatest, if not the greatest books ever written. I laughed, I cried, I read it again. I'm proud to say I read every word of the Waterloo Descriptions, and the Sewer Descritions, and I love it! Don't let its size intimidate you at all.
Rating: Summary: Unfavorite book of ALL TIME! Review: Here's a tip - read the ABRIDGED VERSION! I read theunabridged, and it took me months. This guy could not stay on track -rather than write a story, he wanted to write about EVERYTHING that has EVER happened EVER. When I got to the 40-page description of Paris's sewer system, I nearly killed myself. This story is not completely lacking. There is lots of drama, lots of touching sentiment. However, I also have a thematic problem with this book. Les Miserables GLORIFIES SUFFERING. If you suffer, you are noble and good. If you don't suffer, you are the enemy. Many fans of this book deny this, but it is true. Hugo was a champion of the little person, which is good, but he also embodied all the worst elements of modern liberalism. The musical based on the book is the same way. And you know, it's effective - we all sympathize with the downtrodden - but I really think Les Mis goes too far. And the b*****d should have edited his own work! Christ!
Rating: Summary: An uplifting book... Review: Book of uplifting spirits in a sense. Its the trial of the human spirit that should and will endure. Jean Valjean is representive of a true sacrificing father figure who at times is still fighting his own ghost like the rest of the world. The character depth is something one rarely finds in todays literature. A classic this will always be...
Rating: Summary: The greatest novel ever Review: Les Mis is hands down the greatest novel I have ever read. No other work of fiction encompasses every aspect of humanity with such completeness. It may be long, but the unabridged version is a must read.
Rating: Summary: One of the best novels ever written. Kudos to Hugo! Review: Assigned to read Les Miserables over the summer for a ninth grade english project, I found the book to be slow at first. Once I got into it, I found myself unable to put the book down. I could read for hours. I had already seen the recent movie, which was a masterpiece by itself. The book's descriptions of the characters and lifestyles makes you feel apart of the story. The book is also very educational. Unawaringly, I found myself better understanding of other books written during the seventeen hundreds. You feel love and compassion for Cosette and Fantine. Respect for Valjean. The book takes you into the years that they are living. This book stands out above the rest.
