Summary: A must-read!
Review: When I read this book, it was for a project for school, so I was a little wary of it. OK, so it's 1500 pages. But don't let that intimidate you! The book does start out a little slow, but after a few chapters it gets really interesting. This is the best book I've read in my life. I was so amazed at the way that Hugo tied together every character and idea. This is a story that is so touching and also relevant to issues we see today. This is definitely worth a solid 5 stars!

Review: this book is 520 pages of nothing, NOTHING. Understand????

Summary: don't waste your time people.
Review: Im sorry to say this too all the naive people who loved this book, but this is a cheap run-off of the already crappy book, "The Count Of Monte Cristo" by Alexander Dumas. Whoever thinks they are a great or intellecual person because they liked this piece of garbage is really a small and simple person who gets pleased by an extremely boring, if not, the most boring book with a cheesy, go happy plot. But hey, at least you can say that you read a really long book and show off about that.

Summary: A Nineteenth-Century Masterpiece!
Review: This book is one of the most touching works that I have ever read. The story of Jean Valjean is so riveting that it was hard to ever stop reading the book! Hugo does an excellent job of describing the aspects of 19th century life by tying in the central themes of the penal system, the Paris sewer system, life in a convent, life for women and children, as well as many other important aspects of French life, into the plot. This is one of the best novels ever written!

Summary: I conform and agree with the below
Review: When handed this book as a gift by my boyfriend, I must say that I was a bit overwhelmed at the voluminous content. I must say that Hugo did not forget to describe ANYTHING! But the picture conjured in your mind is so clear due to the lengthy delineations. Hugo's philosophies are incorporated so clearly with the story that one can often mistake it for a discourse in areas of this novel. The events which take place move me like no other book has. It beckons lament, anger, understanding. And Hugo often describes the streets of Paris, which is a delight to me for Paris remains only a dream to me. I wonder why they don't require this book to be read in school. It is truly my favourite.

Summary: One of the best if not the BEST
Review: This is a really magnificent book, a complete literary masterpiece! I read this book a year ago at 16 for a book report, but as I read throughout the book I became totally absorbed in the plot and characters. The book is lengthy, but that's even better because you soon will discover Victor Hugo's poetic style of writing and fall in love with it. There is mixed emotions throughout the book, but never will you be disappointed. The characters are very real, and will touch your most sensitive feelings. This book is a perfect example of the human spirit.

Summary: A impressive work.
Review: As in his other books, Victor Hugo totally captures and enthralls his vast audience.

Review: I would just like to note that a review below by a reader from California stated "Of course everyone has heard of Andrew Loydd Webber's LES MISERABLES". The musical Les Miserables was written by Alan Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg (English version translated by Herbert Kretzmer), not Andrew Lloyd Webber. Awesome book, it makes you appreciate life.

Summary: The best book I've read so far
Review: Although the story is a little different than the real version because Jean Valjean is the main character throughout the novel and you don't really get to know the bishop as well, this abridged version is still awesome. It's not really that long and you'll finish this book quickly because the plot is so interesting. There is a lot of action as well as little romance that deals with realistic emotions that we all could relate to,

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Captivating but a mite long-winded at times
Review: I enjoyed this book...especially the parts about the Bishop and Jean Valjean's transformation. I think it's kinda sad that he was pursued by Javert and somehow his later character after Monsiuer Madeleine. I had to skip through some parts especially Waterloo and where he spends chapters describing something. Aside from that it is a masterpiece...I love his descriptions of people. They are masterful and totally able to fall-in-love with. Especially the early Cossette.
