Summary: Read this book, but be prepared to neglect EVERYTHING else!
Review: Upon the recommendation of a friend, I read Outlander a few years ago. I was instantly drawn to the characters and fell in love with Jamie (OK...AND Claire too). I am not an avid book reader and care even less about history (There were CLANS in Scotland?), but once I started reading I could NOT put the book down. At the end of Outlander I had to have more, so I immediately purchased Dragonfly and Voyager...then had to WAIT for Drums! Diana Gabaldon's style of writing and exquisite details of lust, love, war and family leave me wanting more every time. I truly hope that this is a never-ending series!

Summary: Very good historical fiction
Review: I first saw this book for sale as an "extra" copy at a library. After looking at the cover description, I decided to check it out rather thank buy it. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. I now own this book and all the others the author has written, and I will buy the next one to come out. And I don't wait for the paperback. These are books I keep coming back to, to re-read.

Summary: PLEASE MAKE THESE BOOKS INTO A MOVIE!!!
Review: I just finished reading Outlander and I am anxious to begin the next one! Diana Gabaldon has a wonderful gift! She is amazing! This book made me laugh until I cried, and cry until I sobbed. I don't want to give the plot away to those who haven't read it but I just want to say I haven't been affected emotionally by a book like this in a very long time!

Summary: Red haired Highlander captures this reader's heart
Review: I haven't read much fiction during the past few years, but in September I picked up Outlander at the library, and have been thoroughly hooked for the past two months. I'm so glad I started this series after the sequels were written, because I immediately ordered all of them (from Amazon.com, of course.) I just finished the last book and am feeling withdrawl. What makes this a great read are the lush prose, gut-wrenching emotional situations and the wonderful characters. You can't help but fall in love with Jamie (whether you're a man or woman, it seems!). I like the detail about Claire's herbs and healing. The words "dinna fash and verra" keep creeping into my vocabulary. This is great recreational reading.

Summary: Starts slow, but is a keeper! Heroic and romantic.
Review: I loved this book. It started slow, but when it picks up after the first chapter, it really takes off. I couldn't put it down. I immediately went and purchased all the author's other books. This book has adventure, sex, love, travel, everything! It gives you a glimpse of a 1800's Scottish highlanders life from the current day person's point of view. It was like having a fun history lesson.

Summary: Disappointing and meandering
Review: I was very intrigued by the basic premise of this book, and for the first couple of chaptures, I enjoyed the writing style and the characters. However, it just seemed to fall flat after that. The time travel theme seemed to be just an initial hook, and it wasn't followed through.

If I were sucked through a time vortex, I don't think I could easily forget my husband, the conveniences of this century, and the advances that women have made. There were no contrasts made between this time and then--the time travel aspect was merely a contrivance to give a new twist to an poorly-contrived, long-winded, and ultimately tedious novel about two people who spent most of their time boinking.

There was little continuity in this book--it consisted of violence, forced closeness, lust, conflict, violence, lust, fixation on sodomy, violence, more gratuitous violence, lust, and a very weird resolution of the resultant psychic scars.

I wouldn't waste my money on this one...

Summary: Trite, banal, ill-plotted, disappointing
Review: I finished this book merely to see if it got any better--it didn't

Summary: As a Scot I found it accurate and fascinating
Review: It is a gripping book, totally believable and truly unputdownable. The historical facts are accurate and portrayed in a way that is always interesting and gripping. I lost many hours of sleep as I had to know what would happen next! I cannot wait for Dragonfly! Readers who enjoyed this book should try Barbara Erskine - "Lady of Hay" This is just one of many.

Summary: There's violence---and then there's VIOLENCE
Review: At age 47-ish, I find myself amused at the level of feminist outrage reflected in the reviews about the violence in "Outlander", many of which focus on a single scene in which Jamie spanks (no-holds-barred, and no joke) his disobedient wife.

This is, to my way of thinking, a relatively minor incident in this sprawling novel which has more to do, perhaps, with LOYALTY: that of a wife for her 20th-century husband vs. her 18th century husband, that of a man for his family and clan and country, that of clansman for clansman, and finally and horrifically, that of a man of honor who has pledged "the protection of his body", no matter the cost, to save the life of his beloved.

So, to find out WHY he walloped her (and why that MIGHT be justifiable at SOME level), READ THE BOOK. I might add that this novel is also, at many points, uproariously funny. And touching. And consistently well-written. Literate. Utterly flavorful.

Summary: An amazing novel of passion and true love!
Review: I was skeptical to read a time-travel romance novel but I decided to based on recommendation. I loved it!!!!! The characters are amzing and lovable and I would spend 20,000 pages on Claire and Jamie. I am now on the third novel and I can't wait to get to the fourth and the companion!
