Rating: Summary: An astonishing book that has moved me beyond comprehension! Review: I have read more books than I can count...There are only a few novels that I consider "the Best"...then came Outlander! Totally blew all competition out of the water!! I have told all my friends about this book (even bought audio version for Hubby) and everyone has thanked me profusely. My best friend and I get into the most intense discussions in the books...Even to the point of picking out famous actors and actresses who could play the parts should it ever be made into a movie!(we have all the secondary characters chosen, but we cannot decide who would play Jamie and Claire! Nobody can come close to filling theirs shoes!) Bless the day I came upon this book!
Rating: Summary: Best Book I Have Ever Read !!! Review: My Mother got this book for me because I was sick and couldn't really do anything but read. I thought It was just going to be a long boring book , boy was in for a surprise ! This book had so much emotion in it that made me cry and laugh (laugh too much )This book was better than most romances because it was more real .Outlander in end didn't end with everything "Peachy-Keen" Jamie gets hurt mentally ,but in the end Claire helps him thourgh his problem .I think it was also neat that Claire was older by at least 5 years , cause in most romances the guy is almost twice the age of the heroine(cradle robbing) .Read this book listening to celtic music and you could almost be in heaven .
Rating: Summary: Fascinating blend of Now and Then! Review: A real page turner... I love the theme of modern woman in 1700's Scotland. Thank goodness there are MORE!
Rating: Summary: Extaordinary Review: I can't begin to explain the effect that this book and it's successors have had on me. I feel that the main characters, Claire and Jamie, are more than just people in a story, words on a page. I have re-read the series several times and anxiously await the last two(?) books in this particular series. I find myself thinking about Claire and Jamie and re-living their tumultuous past and wondering what the future will bring them. I love the historical references, the Scots theme, the great love story, the piquant scenes between these unforgetable people. I admired the strength of them both, though they were each strong in their own ways. Standing up for what they believed was right. And always, always, the great love..........It is my fervent hope that Ms. Gabaldon will hurry and satisfy my craving for more of this incredible story. Long live Jamie and Claire!
Rating: Summary: At the risk of sounding completely inane... Review: ..when I finished the first book, I felt as if a group of close friends had left town and I knew I wouldn't enjoy their company again. Then I found that there were MORE stories, and couldn't wait to find them to read -- it was like re-visiting a favorite place. Another narrative review of these books isn't necessary - just read all the comments that came before and you can't miss the premise - but it's lovely and comfortable to read about a woman [past the first heavy-breathing blush of youth] who is still a functioning, resourceful person (like some of us, perhaps?). Good Grief! I'm doing it, too - there really IS a feeling that Claire's more than just fiction. When's the next book due on the shelves?
Rating: Summary: Loved every page!!! Sexy, romantic, and full of history! Review: I couldn't put the book down! It really was a get away from the real world! Claire is the best heroine since Jane Austens Lizzie in Pride and Prejudice. And where can I get a Jamie Fraser for myself? The two of them left me breathless, and eager for the next books!!!
Rating: Summary: Outlander/Cross Stitch - a revelation Review: I purchased the paperback Outlander (named Cross Stitch in the UK) as a last resort of a bad choice of books as WH Smith at Heathrow Airport to while away the flight to Chicago where I was going to visit my sister in May 1995 - the book store in the airport didn't seem to have anything that appealed to me but as a former student of archaeology the historical background suggested that this book might at least pass away a boring 8 hours. From the first line I was completely hooked and the hours literally flew past. I ignored my 9 year old daughter who was accompanying me and could barely tear myself away for drinks and meals (well okay meals, maybe - I did indulge in several drinks!) I have avidly awaited the publication of each book since. I have the paperback of Cross Stitch, Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager and the hardback of Drums of Autumn (couldn't wait for the paperback of this one to be published in the UK) and have read all 4 at least 3 times. I am madly in love with Jamie Fraser who transports me from my mundane life as a bored Welsh housewife and cannot wait for The Fiery Cross, and Farewell, King to be published so that I can escape once more into the world of the 18th century and a time when men really loved their women and didn't just expect them to hoover the house and look after their kids and have their dinner on the table each evening.
Rating: Summary: We need such beauty in our lives. Review: Only a book of such exceptional intensity could have necessitated my writing a review for the first time online. It is not unusual for me to laugh at fine humor or to cry for heartbreak in fiction; it is quite unusual for me to find myself incapable of putting any book down. As others have said, I became so absorbed that my world suddenly became Scotland during the clan uprisings. My husband was also spellbound, though perhaps a bit embarrassed to be seen reading a book on the commuter train that he discovered was marketed by the local bookstore as "Romance". And at a wedding during which the bride and groom danced their first dance to the wedding theme from "Braveheart" and then the rest of us joined in the dance, as my husband took me in his arms he became Jamie for me, and I Claire, and I wept. We need such beauty in our lives.
Rating: Summary: One of the best Review: I bought this book at our local pharmacy, thinking it would be a book to leave in the car to read while waiting for the kids at their various activities....Boy, was I wrong! Although it started off a little slow, once Claire passes through the stones and meets Jamie, I could not put the book down. I enjoyed it more than many of the books I have read in a long time....and believe me, I read alot!!. I gave it to a friend to read, who told another friend, who told another, and another, and another......As a result, Ms. Galbaldon is now a favorite of ours. We have read all four books in the series, but this is the one that is continuously read and re-read over and over again. I enjoy her discriptive style, and the information about Scotland thrown in for good measure. Perhaps some will say the whole concept is a little far-fetched--time travel, the numerous dangerous situations Claire and Jamie find themselves in, etc. But do not let this sway you from reading this book...you will not regret your decision.
Rating: Summary: More Than A Romance Novel Review: I read the Drums Of Autumn and decided to start at the beginning with The Outlander. I'm not a big fan of romance novels, but this book is much more than just romance. Ms. Gabaldon is a very talented story teller. Reading her books, I feel like I've been dropped into another world. There is much of interest in this novel. The way of life in Scotland in the 1700's, and especially, the medical practices and use of healing herbs. Bits and pieces of actual history lend a realistic touch. A very long book, but difficult to put down.
