Rating: Summary: This is no satire Review: It is wildly extravagant to call this book a satire or parody of the Lilian Jackson Braun "The Cat Who..." books. Braun's books may be formulaic, especially in her more recent tomes, but they are always very good reading. Braun is very convincing in her male voice of the central character, James Quilleran, former newspaper reporter, now murder-mystery-solving philanthropist. Her descriptions of catly behavior, north central American places, and small town mores are colorfully and engagingly written. Her characters are well- developed and carry over from book to book, creating a village of characters, which Braun fans feel they know like old friends. On the other hand, "The Cat Who Killed Lilian Jackson Braun" is very poorly written. It cannot stand on its own as a book worth reading. It relies on heavily the reader's knowledge of Braun's writings for meaning and so-called humor. There is no humor, no satire, no parody in this trash. There are many disgusting sexual and perverse situations and charaterizations in Kaplow's book. The tone is pure trash novel sleaze. Braun's favorite characters are made into absurd and obscene cartoons. A heavy hand serves up vulgar attempts to be funny, but they fall flat again and again. I am no prude and do not object to the language, but here the attempt to gross out readers is so obvious and so grotesque, that it interferes with the attempted satire. It does not "flow" -- it barks! I threw the book down in disgust. I was not irate because Kaplow tried to rip Braun's genre (cat lovers' murder mysteries), but because the book was slapped together in about one day, with little thought or care. I must have been dreaming to think this book was going to be a humorous satire! It ain't. I wasted my money. Don't waste yours.
Rating: Summary: Raunchy and Riotous! Review: This book is a celebration of the craziness of life: of lust, of madness, of jealousy, of friendship. It's deliciously funny and deliciously alive.
Rating: Summary: Warning for under-age readers! Review: I purchased this book because I enjoy parody and humorous fiction. However, I was utterly horrified by the graphic sex scenes throughout the book! It worried me that someone might buy this book for an underage reader not knowing the contents. The book was funny, but....
Rating: Summary: Funniest Book I've Ever Read Review: I'm a book editor from San Francisco. I read a lot of manscripts. A friend pushed this novel into my reluctant hands, insisted that I read it. I did. Here's the verdict without any adornment. This is the funniest book I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: The Perfect Gift from "Bad Santa"! Review: I was given this novel as a gift, and it was a delightful antidote to the suffocating sentimentality of the season. It's raucous and racey and very much alive, and it made me forget all the woes of the world for a few hilarious hours. Just what the doctor ordered!
Rating: Summary: ACERBIC AND SURREAL! Review: I love the way Amazon always recommends similar items that could be coupled together. In this case, THE CAT WHO KILLED LILIAN JACKSON BRAUN ought to be coupled with the LOONEY TUNES DVD. The novel is a sort of 21st century Looney Tune. (Although in the 21st century Looney Tunes could be a lot more risque!) It's a wild and no-holds-barred ride through THE MALTESE FALCON and about a dozen other mysteries. Nothing's sacred. The novel's outlandishness and audaciousness are breathtaking. And the bottom line is it's really hilarious. I had to put the book down I was laughing so much. And even Looney Tunes don't do that to my anymore.
Rating: Summary: Delicious literary parody! Review: This novel is really a broad parody of mysteries and their conventions, and an even more wicked and barbed parody of the literary scene: critics, editors, jealous writers. When the main character went to a juice bar named LENNY JUICE and ordered a "Decaf Blah Blah Blah" I knew I was going to love this one. It's sharp, hip, and snarky! (Morons beware.)
Rating: Summary: OUTRAGEOUS COMEDY Review: This novel had me roaring with laughter. It throws all the "tastefulness" of the Lilian Jackson Braun series right into the toilet. And throws it there wtih such vibrant, non-stop comic energy that it leaves you breathless. It's like a 200 page standup comedy routine. Terrific. Audacious. Original.
Rating: Summary: Cat Who Killed....Should be Buried Review: The Cat Who Killed Lilian Jackson Braun is a waste of good money. I was expecting a delicious satire, at least on a par with LJB. Instead, it is obviously a quickly and poorly written attempt to slam The Cat Who series and the legions of devoted fans of the series. My husband and I both threw this hairball of a book down with a very loud ACCCHHHKKKKKK! Someone could have written a truly readable and funny satire. This one is not it. I say we give it a decent and prompt burial.
Rating: Summary: Garbage. Very poor taste. Don't waste your time. Review: Writer is just trying to cash in on "The Cat Who" success. Book is trashy and has nothing to do with cats.
