Rating: Summary: Excellent for the uniniated in the military. Review: Having just had my son graduate from Parris Island I found the Crucible most enlightning. It gave me the marine expierence from a Marines point of view. I highle reccomend the book for parents who are thinking of encouraging their children to join the corps.
Rating: Summary: Great insight and information Review: I am a Captain on Active Duty and also a former platoon-mate of Captain Woulfe's at The Basic School. A great book about what boot camp has become and some of the principles behind Marine Corps Recruit Training. A must read for marines, everywhere, to see where the Corps has been, where it is now, and where it's going.
Rating: Summary: Very Accurate Review: I am Marine reservist and found this book to very accurate. Being what we call a "Crucible Marine" I have experienced the rigors of the three day exercise. This book accurately portrays the hardships, fatigue, and motivation that the Crucible evokes. A very good read!
Rating: Summary: It really a'int that difficult Review: I did the crucible in 97 and supervised it in 1999. It really is not that hard to complete. And they play a chessy Lee Greenwood song at the end.
Rating: Summary: The Crucible Review: I enjoyed reading this book. Not only did you learn what Marines endur during bootcamp, but you pick up a little history on the Marine Corp Heros that some of the obstacles are named after. Good book.
Rating: Summary: It was GREAT! Review: I enjoyed the book! I'm a mother of a Marine that went through the Crucible about 1 1/2 years ago in San Diego. I have an even greater sense of pride in my son, knowing what he and his fellow recruits experienced to earn the title of Marine. I knew it was tough, but had no idea how hard it really was. Reading about this group of recruits, including their different backgrounds and personalities, coming together to pull each other through, along with their commitment and dedication was inspiring. I loaned Into the Crucible to my dad, who couldn't wait to read it after I told him about it. The list of family and friends who want to read it is growing, including two 'pre-Crucible' Marines. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: An excellent presentation of the nineties Marine Corps Review: I highly recommend anyone with an interest in the nations military readiness to read, INTO THE CRUCIBLE" By Marine Capt. Jim Woulfe. The book is well written by a Marine on active duty that is participating in the training of young men that aren't always from the best of families, or the best environment. Some grew up in a world where crime, drugs, and gangs is the norm. Even after careful selection the Marine Corps recruiters cannot always select what the Corps would like to have in a recruit.Having served in the Corps in WW-II I can testify that a youngster going into deadly battle is seldom trained sufficiently. However, the current final test when primary boot camp is completed is known as INTO THE CRUCIBLE. This final test is 56 hours of willpower, endurance and skill. When you read this well written book you will at times feel the pain of blisters on your feet, and the twinging of muscles in your arms and legs all accompanied with a growling and empty stomach. Whether lyou have went through Marine Corps Boot Training or not, you will believe that you have been there, done that, when you finish.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down Review: I've never enjoyed any book as much as this one. I bought it one morning and started reading it in the checkout line. I couldn't stop. I read in the parking lot before leaving and at every stop light on the way home. I sat down in the kitchen and read right through lunch. Before I knew it it was dark outside and I was still reading. I finally stopped reading well after midnight, but I couldn't sleep. I ended up getting out of bed to read some more. This book describes being a marine like nothing else I've seen or heard of. If this was required reading in every school, then kids would know what makes this country so great.
Rating: Summary: One of the few San Diego recruit training books- A+++ Review: Many books have been written about recruit training for the United States Marine Corps, but very few of them are based at San Diego, and most are of a period prior to the activiation of the Crucible as the final component. This book gives an accurate view of what the "Hollywood Marine" recruit goes through in their quest to become a Marine. The descriptions given place you there in the Crucible with the recruits and give you a small glimpse of what our young men & women face in the final days before they earn the title of MARINE. This book is a must read for ALL families of Marine Recruits, east or west.
Rating: Summary: Excellent overall view of the Crucible and USMC training! Review: My son will enter "Into The Crucible" this week. I was unsure what the Crucible entailed until I read Woulfe's book. I found the book to be informative, interesting and easy to read. The description of the problems (missions) during the grueling 40 miles and 54 hours of the Crucible were helpful in understanding what each mission was for, and the honor associated with it. This book gave me insight into what it takes to be a UNITED STATES MARINE! I'm impressed with the level of training these kids get and the preparation they receive to defend our freedom. A very well written book! I hope the author is still assigned to the MCRD so I can have him autograph it when I go up for graduation. I am even prouder of my son for what he has accomplished after reading Woulfe's book!
