Summary: Maybe I don't get it...
Review: I read this twice, the first time expecting it to be the greatest book ever, the second without all the expectations and just for a good read. Both times I was disappointed. Don't understand why a kid with a bad attitude makes for such a popular book. By page 50, he had me mad at everything. Maybe I'm shallow, but I don't understand the world's love affair with Holden Caulifield, nor anything he represents. Sorry.

Review: It was alright, a little confusing in the beginning but I got used to it. Overall it was very realistic in my opinion.

Summary: Read it for yourself..
Review: I love this book. I absolutely love it. It's so TRUE. That's the only word I can think of that sums up the book. It's TRUE. The book is about Holden, who was just expelled from school, and how he wanders around New York City for three days before finally deciding to go home. Holden is angry at how the world is, and at how people are. I felt that Holden was seeing the world through the eyes of someone going through the transition from childhood to adulthood, and is angry at the insincerity of the world. He doesn't want to be a part of it, but at the same time, he lies a lot and sometimes tries to be something he's not. He's a teenager. At any rate, just read it for yourself. People will try to tell you what to think of this book. They analyze it to pieces. Even if it's no more that a good story to you, just make the decision on your own.

Summary: It has gotten better as I have gotten older
Review: I read this book about once a year, to keep myself in check. I have to make sure I am not becoming "Phoney." When I first read this in high school, I didn't relate to Holden all that much. I think I was too apathetic relate to his passion. But as I have become more mature (or jaded, some might say), Holden, and this book have become more and more important to me. Caufield is one of the most dynamic and well drawn characters in modern literature. If there is one drawback to this book, it is a bit dated. But then so is Hamlet. If you havent read it, get your hands on this book, It is unequalled. If you aren't already a bit bitter at the world, at the very least, this book will make you ask yourself why you aren't.

Summary: The Intimate View of a Credible Fraud
Review: I never read this wonderful book until I got to college. Not because I was forced to for a class but because I wanted to see what all the hub-hub was all about. I did not see what the mentally impaired saw and I was not insulted by the language either, what I saw was lonely and scared , which is why he was so sarcastic, boy who was not what the WORLD saw him as! He was intelligent and caring but put up a front to protect himself from his cold enviorment. I could identify with this character and the places he was in even though I've never even been to New York or lived in the 50's. I think the Boomers and Generation X have a common bond more than they would like to think. I know my dad and I have one with this book. Both of are generations grew up in such a society that looked good on the outside but rotted on the inside and we were and are mad about it. I think high schoolers and college students should read it but I didn't give it five stars because I does get boring in the middle with him just repeating his ideas over and over. I liked his school life descriptions at the beginnings and his relationship with his sister at the end. Overall one of the best pieces of American Literature. P.S. I recommend Robert Burns the Scottish poet for anyone who liked this book. This book and "Of Mice and Men" Stienbeck, two of the greatest American authors both named their books after two of his poems.

Summary: Catcher in the Rye, "an all around great novel."
Review: The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger; is a great novel for anyone who loves to read. This is a very descriptive novel that goes into the life and into the mind of the main character, Holden Caufield. Holden is a seventeen-year-old high school student, but he is not your average teen. Holden has had much trouble in school. He has already been kicked out of two schools and now another for excessive bad grades. Holden is stressed from roommates in his dorm and what his parents will say to him when they find out he has been kicked out of Pencey High School. Holden, on the other hand, seems to be the type of person who doesn't care what people think of him. This made him very enjoyable to read about because he relates to the way I feel personally. Holden then decides to leave Pencey and go to New York to lay low for a couple of days until his parents find out what he had done and give them time to cool off. In New York, Holden gets a hotel room and is stressed from rude people in the big city and is depressed because he feels lonesome. He begins missing his sister Phoebe. He goes to see her at night but doesn't want to confront his parents so he wants to leave after visiting his sister. When he sees her and decides to leave Phoebe wants to go with him. Holden gets very upset arguing with her and breaks down. Holden couldn't take any more of the pressure and Holden suffers a bad thing. You have to read it to find out what it is. This novel will keep you entertained and you won't want to put it down

Summary: Never mind...
Review: Never mind these fools who say they can't relate to the Holden Caulfield. They're probably the phonies this book was written to criticize. If they had any soul they'd realize Holden is a much deeper charector than they realize. This book is outright one of the better books I've read. If you've ever found yourself say "Jeez, people are such a$$holes!" you will love this book. Also, read Charles Bukowski's Ham on Rye. It's in the same vane, but a little harsher in approach, and some would say a better book.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: recommended
Review: This book has been criticised sometimes for simply relating the frustrations of a spoilt teenager. However, I do not think that this is fair at all. The boy's cynicism is not blind, and there is much related through it all. There certainly is 'method in his madness'. Holden is one of those characters that constantly reminds you of yourself or how you used to be. The raw style of the narrative is at first shocking but I found it very easy to get into. Perhaps you have be a certain age to really enjoy it, but I would recommend it to anyone.
