Rating: Summary: very good, takes a couple of reads... Review: I loved this book, personally. I rate it four stars only because of a few parts (Holden TRYING to get drunk, but not even doing a good job of that... etc.,) I would highly recommend it though. Try reading it a couple of times first- it helps to grasp the author's message. Also see 'leo@fergusrules.com' and 'portrait of the artist as a young man' for good books of this subject matter.
Rating: Summary: A page turner Review: The best I can say of the book is that I could not put it down after I began reading it. Niether could I relate to the character, Caulfield nor did he seem like a very likable person. It was just interesting to see the world through a cynical teenager's eye. Sometimes he does make sense when he wonders at the pretense in our society, but mostly he just comes across as a self -centered, spoilt teen.
Rating: Summary: a must read Review: There is nothing more that I can say than, read this book. You will love it and you will read it again and again. Everything has already been said so i just wanted to put in my 5 stars
Rating: Summary: It's like a light house... Review: This masterpiece was like a light house to my lost soul floating on the dark sea last winter.. I belived that I had had a right choice for me but suddnely lost in what I really wanted in my life..in the middle of it, then this classic gave me an insiration to hang on to this wandering..'cause like is like a floating ship on the sea..sometimes sea is generaous or cruel..and sometimes you can handle it or go to the edge..
Rating: Summary: I'm glad I took the time to see what all the hype was about! Review: For a long time anyone who asked me what my fav. book was I would say "The Counte of Monte Cristo." . . . . Then I read "Catcher.." WOW! I did not think another book could be as good as "..Monte Cristo." Anyways, I LOVED! it to say the least
Rating: Summary: Tripe... Review: While I doubt that this book would rate as meaningful, or powerful enough to be subversive, I wouldn't recommend it. Maybe it's because I can't relate to a spoiled preppie kid. Maybe it's because I read it when I was too old to appreciate it's message. Whichever the case, Holden Caulfield is nothing more than a snot nosed crybaby. I fail to see why Salinger is such an acclaimed writer, either. It's nothing more than an exercise in self indulgence.
Rating: Summary: A TRUE AMERICAN CLASSIC Review: Unprolific as he might be, Salinger is one of America's most beloved writers, and for a damn good reason: CATCHER IN THE RYE is a masterpiece, one of those rare books which is read and reread by one generation after another, destined to be discussed and celebrated for all time. There is no one to whom I would not recommend this literary jewel. BRILLIANT!(Also recommended: NINE STORIES, by Salinger; FRANNY & ZOOEY, by Salinger; RAISE HIGH THE ROOF BEAM, CARPENTERS AND SEYMOUR AN INTRODUCTION, by Salinger; ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, by Ken Kesey; CAT'S CRADLE, by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.; ON THE ROAD, by Jack Kerouac; THE BASKETBALL DIARIES, by Jim Carroll.)
Rating: Summary: Noooo! Review: What in the world are you doing? Why are you reading this book. If you knew the history of this book, you lot would not be reading it at all. If you do some research into the book, you would find that Lee Harvey Oswald, Jack Ruby, Sirhan Sirhan, James Earl Ray, etc, (all assasins) were found to have this book on their person when they were caught. It is thought that this book it the code name behind the CIA MK-ULTRA program (from 1952 - 78). I would never read it.
Rating: Summary: greatest book i have ever read Review: this was an amazing and touching book. i usually dont enjoy reading books, but holdens story touched mine and many others hearts. this is truly a materpiece
Rating: Summary: I've been selling the book's merits since I was sixteen. Review: At the age of 28 I'm still interested in other people's views (esp. teens) of Salinger's work. At the age of 16 my brother, who is now a MD, PHD at MIT, gave me a copy of the Catcher for my birthday. A few months later a pessimistic, sarcastic, and underachieving teen got around to reading the book and my life changed completely. Anyone reading this knows what the book is about. Very few people think the book is "just OK" They either love it or hate it. Like many other addicts of the book I have several wore out copies, including one from the 50's that I prize as one of my most prizes possessions. I was happy to see the book make the top ten. I know that very few books have such loyal followers as "The Catcher in the Rye". I'll go to my grave forever wondering what Salinger thought and wrote about in his spare time all those years after the book.
