Rating: Summary: Way too Late Review: I should have read this book when I was in junior high, 9th grade at most. Perhaps the archetype for the modern me-against-the-world genre, the book is written and read like its character - on its own terms. One thing I enjoyed reading Catcher(which is a breeze, if you don't know) is Salinger's characterization. Holden Caufield is a thorougly original literary creation, and this is precisely why he resembles some of us so much. Making a stand against growing up, the adult world, Caufield's account of life is entirely internalized. His is a world so many of us encounter in the tender-rough years of the midteens - desolate; the people around us - alien; anything that makes us tick - wrong and immoral. Holden Caufield has become synonymous with rebellion, so much so that it was inevitable for him to become a symbol. Breathing life and a fierce air of independence into his hero, Salinger made him so understandable because of his own inability to understand anything. Caufield's inner life, the momentousness of noneventfulness that is the all-too familiar teenageemotional rollercoaster is given full expression. Neither a novel of adventures nor really a novel of "ideas," you might call this the novel of protest - not of social protest, but of man against the world. Caufield is the expression of our latent dissatisfaction and bitterness with the way life shoves us along and time steals itself. He is the audacity to walk out on a dishonest lecture class, to escape the friends who all seem so ignorant during a soul crisis, to ditch the drudgery of duty and responsibiliies on a whim. Caufield is Peter Pan with a drinking habit and leery eyes. He has vigor and the failure of rebellion. Caufield is a palpable reality of the man who tries to step outside the sphere of the life he's thrown into. He finds the door, but finally sees it's lonely on the other side. Much like the choices we make when we open the door, Caufield steps back.
Rating: Summary: Criticism of Society Review: This book is the best. Even though it's a classic it's not one that you would hate to read but still want to be able to say you have read. If you want to know what all the fuss is about, read it, because yes it has been criticized and banned in schools. It is the story of a troubled youth, Holden Caufield, who has just abandoned his fancy boarding school, Pencey Prep. He journeys to New York City and repudiates all society has to offer. It is a witty story about the abandonment of youth, shattered idealism, the shunning of one who is different, the fake glamour of life, the love one has for a sister. Read it, you won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: This is it!!! Review: If you are searching for a great book, the search is over. Catcher in the Rye is the best book, period. I do not say these words lightly. It is not just the perfect reflection of teenage turmoil and right of passage, it stretches wider to form the closest an author has ever come to describing the movement of the American self. Written in the 1950s, it still hold massive relevance in the 21st century, the character of Holden Caufield transcends generations and fashions to become the voice for any lost sole. It is more than 5 stars good- there is no description of what this book will do for your life.
Rating: Summary: My FAVORITE Book Review: This book is the best book I have ever read. I wish I could write a book like this. Many people may feel that a lack of plot makes this book weak. I, however, believe that this gives The Catcher in the Rye a quality not often found in books. While reading this book, I could not stop myself from feeling sorry for Holden, I could almost see myself in his position. I have never wanted to write a review before, but I had to after reading this book. Besides To Kill a Mockingbird, this is the only book I have not hated my English teacher for making me read.
Rating: Summary: so smart ! Review: I'm 38 and have just finished reading the catcher. I really liked it and found it profoundly sensitive and intelligent. The words are very simple and let us understand all the fragility of Holden who wants to be considered as a tough guy. Hey, he is 16 and doesn't want to be considered as a kid anymore but it really does take a lot of suffering... I recommend the book to grown ups and kids in pain. It may help....
Rating: Summary: Ermerher it was ok Review: I first saw this book I thought it was going to be a very boring book. It seemed like it was very pointless but when I started reading I thought it wasn't that bad I actually somewhat got in to the book and thought it wasn't that bad. I thought that it was wicked cool that Holden wasn't afraid when he got fed up with everything that he just got up and left on his own to New York. I would love sometimes to just leave and go to dance clubs in New York City. I recommend this to most people except for people who will get obsessed with this book and try to shoot someone the day the patriots are playing Miami in a playoff game. But then again you can't shoot John Lennon again. Other than that I think most people will enjoy this book. Also I liked the random characters that if they didn't come it wouldn't have been an interesting story. Like his best friend wasn't in the book much but he was in it enough to make the book about forty pages longer because of the stress and conflict that Holden went through. There was also that prostitute and her pimp that added like twenty more pages and Holden wanted to commit suicide, which is never a healthy thing. Holden was a cool kid since it seemed that he never had anyone not to cool he always had someone to call. It's wicked cool.
Rating: Summary: oh my god!! Review: I'M SOOOO ANNOYED with all these ... who say "OH! what so classic about this? Some stupid kid who hates the world, hates life". ARRRRGH!!! okay, i'm sure a BOOK is judged from many different angles. could be the content, could be the style, could be the IMPACT it leaves on readers after reading it. if you're gonna start ... about the content ["stupid spoilt unappreciative kid yakk yakk yakk yakk"] then fine, i don't blame you for being annoyed with how holden's mind works. BUT!!! what the ... is wrong with it in the first place? He always makes sense behind all his grudges, and not only that! he does it in a super super hilarious manner! you want some extracts? okay let me give you some extracts to stop you from bitching about it being a classic okay? --> "Anyway, it was the Saturday of the football game with Saxon Hall. The game with Saxon Hall was supposed to be a very big deal around Pencey. It was the last game if the year, and you were supposed to commit suicide or something if old Pencey didn't win" "I damn near puked listening to him. His date kept saying "No - please. Please, don't. Please". But old Stradlater kept snowing her in this Abraham Lincoln, sincere voice and finally there'd be this terrific silence in the back of the car" OKAY so those aren't exactly superb extractions yadayada but i'm too lazy to go through the whole book and find the best laugh i could get. average ones will do, no? ANYWAY!! STYLE wise, Salinger is a MASTER in this book. C'mon, i dare you to even admit the first paragraph of the book didn't grip your attention for at least until you finish the first chapter. Oh do they have an extract in amazon for you to see? I think so. well go read it quick! and tell me that -that- intro wasn't a good one. OKAY, so if you didn't even give a little giggle reading it, heck, yeah i understand how boring your life must be without any sense of humour. and i completely understand how you could give this book 1/5 stars. nevermind these ... read on. IT'S HILARIOUS!! from the start till the end!! it's not some smart-pants humor. it's plain, it's straight forward, it's like some crazy clown talking straight at you and you can't help but laugh. oh did i mention that Salinger writes this book like he's TALKING to you? yeap! this book isn't your regular [insert popular author's name] . Salinger doesn't use bombastic words like most books do. He TALKS to you. i swear. he uses simple witty conversational english like "and all that stuff" , "it killed me". you know? or you don't know? either way, you gotta read it right?! RIGHT! what else.. ooh it's pretty touchy too. like towards the end, his sister Phoebe does all these cute stuff you wish your sister [or you wish you'd have a sister] would do. WHAT ... ME OFF IS... Salinger writes -SO- well that it makes you wanna know what happens next more and more and more. So the ending makes you go like, "ARGH! HOLDEN! don't stop THERE!!" :) well if you'd like to know what the book is about, it's ... so i'll drop that here. i just wanna defend this book because it's SUPERRRRRBBB!! and it's the kind of book you could just pick up and read anytime. you could also even just open ANY part of the book and start reading there just to get a few laughs on the way Holden talks to you. it's the kind of book you wanna bring with you everywhere. do you even wanna hear me going around the bush? okay, my point IS!! THIS BOOK IS GGGGREEEEEEEAAAAATTTTTTTTT and ignore those ... who say there's nothing classic about it [yadayada, you know the rest] because this book is DEFINITELY, [i assure you!] for everyone. no need for some exclusive taste or something. the main thing about it is that IT'S ENTERTAINING. it's laugh laugh laugh from the starttt to the ennd!! this book is one of its kind. WAY TO GO Salinger!
Rating: Summary: Ok Review: I thought that "The Catcher in the Rye" was a good book. I dont understand how people can totally hate it. It wasnt the best book i've ever read. I seems like Holden complains about everything. Even though there was quite alot of complaining i still liked it.
Rating: Summary: Caught by "The Catcher in the Rye" Review: Despite a weak plot, "The Catcher in the Rye" is a wonderful book about a brilliant, yet cynical, teenage boy. Following the course of a few days, the book uses several symbols in the form of common objects to stand for major values in life. Modern literature at its finest.
