Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: I think that this book is great, and makes good use of an untypical hero. Holden Caulfield, who has already dropped out of a few prep schools, has dropped out of another. He isn't a typical person either, not by a long shot. With a strong hate for phonies and the movies, Holden tells the story of his time alone in New York after leaving Pencey Prep. The Catcher In the Rye is an incredibly descriptive book, but in a different way than most. The story is filled with a plethora of Holden's thoughts and ideas. He is a very, very developed character. Another great quality of this book is its uniqueness. It is unlike any other book I have read. The development of the main character makes it seem very real, and can really help you visualize the story. People also speak realistically, actually swearing when it's appropriate, making the book more interesting and even more real. Sometimes the thinking becomes a bit obsessive, but not much. This book is great, especially for those interested in a classic novel.
Rating: Summary: A good look into teen depression Review: I loved The Catcher in the Rye. Im not a big reader but I read this whole big and I loved it. Its a book that makes you think while you read and laugh. Holden lets you in on how he feels and how his mind works. I would definitly give it 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: this book has been responsible for so much pain and sufferin Review: Hi, I've read this book, and I must say that I have read the damage that it caused, according to stories I have read. This book was linked with the murders of John Lennon, and actress Rebecca Schaeffer. How could this book be around, when so many nutcases use it for such things?
Rating: Summary: Great coming-of-age story Review: A very well-written book. It took Mr. Salinger 10 years to complete it. It is probably hard to think and write like a teenager when you are not one. It is a first-person narration by Holden Caulfield, a 16-year old boy, who was kicked out of prep school. He spends 2-3 days in New York city on his own rather than going home to face his parents. The book describes Holden's view of the adult world, his likes and serious dislike of 'phoniness' in a very distinctive language. This coming-of-age story is a must read for everyone, especially yougsters who are in the teenage years. I wish I had read it when I was in my teens. I would have found someone I could identify with at that time (well, why deny it, even now): the way Holden's thoughts go every which way as he gets distracted and his overactive imagination about the future.
Rating: Summary: AWESOME BOOK Review: I really wasn't interested at all in reading the book.. because it was required for high school but as i read it i became attached to the book..it is a great novel ,every young person SHOULD read it!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book. Review: I'm glad that I've read this book, because it's so insightful. Holden Caulfield comes alive through these pages, and the symbolisms and deeper meanings make this book a great read for young teenagers and those more mature.
Rating: Summary: WHAT WOULD HOLDEN DO? Review: After reading some of these reviews I was moved to write one myself. Many of the reviews are obviously from kids who identify with Holden's confusion and desire to do the right thing. It's a great book, to say the least, but I remember the first time I read it. I came away feeling like Holden, depressed. Holden wants to know what makes people do the horrible things they do. Like Holden I too asked those questions and I see that many of the young people who have written reviews here are asking the same questions. For answers try: HOW TO SAVE AMERICA AND THE WORLD. It was written after many years of asking Holden-like questions in the same naïve and innocent manner. Perhaps Holden would agree with some of the explanations for our world's problems! Joseph Francione [author of HOW TO SAVE AMERICA AND THE WORLD]
Rating: Summary: Are you "The Catcher in the Rye?" Review: I was surprised how much Holden is like me, and then later appalled that Holden was seen as a kid who doesn't want to grow up. As a girl whose always been told to grow up, I like the book so much because Holden shares the same traits as I do- basically he is bored of all those phony adults who always seem to have somewhere or something to do. It makes me happy about myself, but it also tells me to grow up.
Rating: Summary: Banned books Review: "Catcher in the Rye" is one of a handful of books that have, at one time or another, been banned by many public and school libraries. The list might amaze you: James Joyce's "Ulysses," McCrae's "Bark of the Dogwood," and Twain's "Huck Finn" are just a few other examples. "Catcher" should be read for this reason alone. But aside from that, it's a stellar book, perfectly capturing wit, dialogue, teenage angst, and a period in American life before everything REALLY fell apart. But lest you think it's a meer time capsule, think again, for "Catcher" is and will always be, a classic.
Rating: Summary: A classic Review: I think that those reviewers who think that the book is boring should reread it when they are older so that they can understand all of the themes. My sister read this as a sophomore and thought that the guy (Holden Caufield) was insane and that he just rambled about things that didn't make sense. A lot of people reviewing say the same thing. This really is a good book, and the reason why much of the book is ramblings is because it portrays Holden as an immature young man (he was 16) who did not want to take responsibility for his life. He wanted to be a "catcher in the rye" to save children from growing up and becoming mature phonies. He didn't like the idea of growing up to be a phony. He thinks he is above everyone else and is cynical. He is critical of the world and acts like a victim. While this description describes someone you would hate, you actually empathize with Holden and like him. He's smart, he has a caring side to him, he's screwed up, and you just want to jump into the book and give him a big hug. The reason why Holden may be so messed up is because his younger brother died of leukemia. He went crazy breaking windows in the garage when his brother died. This is a really moving novel about a boy growing into a man that does not want to grow into a man. It's depressing in some parts and funny in others. I really recommend you read this book, because it is really good. If you read it and hated it, I recommend buying the spark notes so that you can fully understand the themes and read it again when you are older.
