Summary: Pointless
Review: In a word, this book is pointless. I may seem like a mindless critic that hates everything, but i rarely dislike a book. I will give it one thing...it interested me, and kept me reading, but it never really got anywhere. If Holden didn't smoke a pack a day, washed his mouth out with soap, and quit hiring prostitutes, maybe he wouldn't be so depressed! I am mainly bitter about The Catcher in the Rye because i always hear how good it is, blah blah blah, so i read it, and its basically about a 16 year old kid who needs to go to a correction facility. The catcher in the rye taught me one thing: if you put seventeen cuss words on one page, your novel can be "a supreme masterpiece" too!

Summary: Another Phony Review.
Review: While reading this book, I, being a teenager myself, came to understand Holden, the main character. He isn't so different from some friends I know. It is my wish that there be more teacher who are willing to to love their students, and help them bestow meaning to their own lives.

Holden, when expelled from his prep school Pencey, leaves it as soon as he can. Taking care not to tell the news to his parents sooner than necessary, he lingers in New York. He encounters a series of incidents --- cab drivers, a prostitute, the two nuns... --- as he dives deeper into his "phony" world.

Troubled adolescents like Holden are not rare these days. I realized that the source of such repugnance towards one's surroundings is lack of care. No one, atleast it seemed so for Holden, cared enough to give attention to what was going on in his mind. The place, other than his home, that should take the blame more than anywhere else is Pencey. The school was full of phonies, because the curriculum was not so focused on making the students "find the idea that fits one's mind best." Finally, Phobe, the only person in the story that is capable of giving Holden the much needed affection and care, saves Holden from his deep fall and sets him straight.

This story, written in first-person narrative and conversational tone, ends with an happy ending. But I keep asking myself: Will every troubled boy find his Phoebe, The Catcher in the Rye?

It depresses the hell outta me when I think about it.

Summary: Behind the catcher
Review: First of all, I want to apologize about my bad english, but I`ll try to express myself I read this book because I hear that this book encouraged Lennon`s murderer to... him. I had the curiosity to know what would a book can say to encourage somebody to .... After I read this book I can say about it that far of being a classic literature book, is better a filosofy one, but not as you read it, as you undersantd it. I can compare this book with other that is very similar, this is "Der Steppenwolf" by Hermann Hesse. In this book the main character, Harry Haller, is a misunderstanded guy that is sure that he is a very rare kind of human who had another side, a dark side that is like an animal and it come out and fight with the human side. This same theory is in The Catcher in the Rye, tha main character, Holden Caulfield, is a misunderstanded guy that have this both sides that always fight, the human Holden and the animal Holden, so he get depressed and he seems to have no goals in life. But this book also has a pretty cool humor, because Holden is a cynic teenager that doesn`t worry about and always have nothing left to lose. Also is a very special guy, who can despise the most complex art or science, but in the other side he admire very little details like a good dancer or his sister(better his death brother). As my conclusion I can recommend this book, but not to everybody, I recommend it for those who are not enough worried about anything and for those who wnats to see "behind the catcher" to indentify themselves.

Again, excuse me for my terrible english! Thank you!

Summary: Catcher is Character Driven, not Plot Driven
Review: If you're reading The Catcher in the Rye because you heard somewhere that it'll give you the meaning to life, and there's some sort of hidden message, like reading it backwards says "Paul is dead," don't read it. J.D. Salinger, like so many sadly misinterpreted writers of his day, is examining Holden's internal impulses, searching for meaning in a world where he has yet to find any. This book is written in stream-of-consciousness style, meaning the sentences run-on and meander, true to Holden's thinking. It's actually as if the book were written, and then Holden got his hands on it, and his own interpretation of it is what resulted in Catcher. This book will continue to frustrate anyone who reads it for plot coherence, because it is driven by character.

To many people, a good book equals a good storyline with a nice, neat ending, and as a result, this book doesn't measure up. J.D. Salinger instead chooses to CHALLENGE OUR CONVENTIONS of a novel, and in doing so, creates a lasting place for himself among the likes of Joyce and Woolf. Brilliant.

Summary: oldie but goodie
Review: The Catcher and Holden has it's funny, thought provoking, brash, boring, true, stubborn moments. Based in New York City, where phoney, flitty people are almost everywhere, I can see myself in the same situations as Holden. I like the part where Holden stands his ground, even though he is at a vunerable time in his life, at the end of the book. It is true that people sometimes take advantage of people at their lowest times. A must read for everyone.

Summary: T oo real and intimate to be a book !!
Review: I think quite a few of the reviewers here have missed the point about what this book was all about. And the reasons for it becoming the sort of cult classic among young people... For me this book has always been too intimate and real to review objectively in a literary way. When you read it... it's like your own private thoughts are being opened out and put on paper for the world to analyse and amuse themselves with. I don't know about the background and the context in which the author wrote the book but it seemed like I was going through my own diaries of adoloscent years. Disturbing, dark, a sense of endless isolation... a brilliant, inspired work.

Summary: Not bad, but sometimes way too slow.
Review: Holden was at times interesting, at times VERY boring. He really does ramble and a lot of that rambling has nothing to do with anything. Still a good book, though. Still worth reading.

Summary: Amazing
Review: Holden Caulfield is sometimes called the King of the Losers. An apt title, if you go by his school grades. But if you go by his life experience, it is not true at all. No, Holden's not a role model. He's not somebody you look up to. He's probably not even somebody you'd come to with a problem. But in a way he is somebody to admire. So much of being a teenager is schoolwork and being pushed to succeed just for the sole purpose of going to a good college, so you can get a good job and live in a cubicle for the rest of your days, doing the same thing every day. Holden isn't that. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm not saying it's not the right life for some people, but you need to experience life. And that is just what Holden does. Salinger's writing style is awesome and this is my favorite book for all time

Summary: Good Read
Review: Just to chime in. It's a good read. I think it's important WHEN you read this book. I read it when I was about the same age as the main character and liked it because it rang true and because I could sympathize with the guy.

Summary: The Catcher in the Rye
Review: This book is so good, it'll make you a better person. When you think about it, theres a lot of people in the world not being thereselves and acting really phoney. Holden, the main character, talks about these people and life in general. While Holden is a high school drop out, he's gotta have one of the best personalities I ever heard of. If you like books about life read this. I couldn't put it down and its not even and action or romance book! Get it quick, you wont regret it.
