Rating: Summary: Well written, BUT... Review: The book is well written, it starts out good (lots of nice quotes), but the ending is sooo dumb. It ruins the whole book. The book is generally predictable and although I like this style, the style only works when an author has something significant to say. Some may disagree with me here, but I thought Chuck had something much more significant to say when he wrote Fight Club. Of course, I couldn't put Survivor down, but in the end I was REALLY dissapointed.
Rating: Summary: A rude and in-your-face commentary on 21st century America Review: If you thought 'Fight Club' was fascinating in a bizarre sort of way then you will absolutely love 'Survivor'. Packed with the same wit and slightly off-center perspective, Chuck Palahniuk delivers another hilarious and insightful look at the world we live in. Viewed through the eyes of a most unlikely hero, the book takes aim at the media frenzy that inevitably follows tragedy, the publicity and marketing fury that takes advantage of such tragedies and the gullible American public that not only swallows it all whole but shells out billions of dollars for a piece of it and begs for more. Put simply: 'Survivor' proves itself to be a rude but accurate in-your-face commentary of 21st century American greed and gullibility.
Rating: Summary: Good, but no fight club Review: Although this book is superior to Invisible Monsters (and Choke, from the looks of it), it still is weaker than Fight Club. The main problem that Survivor has is that it's a little too similar to Fight Club. Loner male, quirky, odd female. The whole media thing got a little fancifal. I really couldn't see the protagonist causing the football stadium to riot, etc. Still a very good book. It is enjoyable and of course, you learn lots of little tidbits on the seedy American underculture.
Rating: Summary: Religion = Commercialism?? Review: Palanhiuk will someday be remembered as one of the great writers of our generation. His style and voice are inspiring, and he cleverly balances his philosophies and off the wall story lines to create brilliant works of writing. Anyone who has ever question the new place of religion in America, or the commercialization of EVERYTHING, will love this novel.
Rating: Summary: Palahniuk's finest effort Review: You already know what it is about, so I'll just tell you to get it. You will be hooked. It is insanely funny, and if this is your first Chuck Palahniuk book, it'll have you reading all of his books. I've yet to meet anyone that has read this and not liked it. What are you waiting for? You know you want it...
Rating: Summary: THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ! Review: Wow. I have never read a better, more involving book in my life. Before this, I'd say the best book I ever read is L.A. Confidential- and this book- Survivior, is much, much better than it. I put this book down at 1:00 In the morning and lied in my bed for over an hour, thinking of how great of a book it was. Finishing it is great, and sometimes upsetting, just because it was so fun reading. What Tender did at the Super Bowl is unforgettable. I have also read Fight Club, and this is many times better. I CANNOT WAIT TILL SURVIVOR THE MOVIE COMES OUT! I HOPE NICOLE KIDMAN PLAYS FERTILITY LIKE SHE WANTS TO!
Rating: Summary: 1 out of 5 smart people will understand this book(spoiler) Review: This book has a certain way of making you think things that are not really happening. "Just ask me how to get bullet holes out of a plaster wall. No, really ask me." The first time you read this you'll think, wow that was good!, but no matter how good you thought the story was, you probably didn't understand it, and it is ten times better than you think. The first two times that I read it I thought that I knew the real story too, but I didn't. I was far from it. I went to a reading of chuck's and he said that Survivor was like a puzzle, and the average reader would probably not get what the story was really about. He didn't use those exact words. I think it was something like, "Survivor is for the smart people." Third time reading it it all clicked. I'm not going to give it away, but it is way darker than you think. SPOILER DON"T READ UNLESS YOU'VE ALREADY READ THE BOOK hint, hint, think about who really kills the other cult members, the caesworker, the agent? chapter 2 ia also a big piece of the puzzle
Rating: Summary: An insight into insight Review: A superb novel with an amazingly skewed view of our world. Armed with an astonishing repertoire of "How to do" knowledge and a knack of taking us into our sub-consious at the consious level Chuck Palahniuk (His first name is as simple as the ideas he presents and his last as weird as his characters) has created another classic for the times. The only thing that bothers me about his work is that after reading them, I can't seem to enjoy any other writing and am almost at the point of committing literary suicide!! Maybe he's one of the sole survivor's of the (OLT) original literary thought cult. I hope that Chuck is not writing all these great novels to become famous and then....:)) PS: The Agent says that my review is not going to help him sell any more books...He argues that there is absolutely nothing in it that plugs the novel. I agree.
Rating: Summary: It doesn't pull the punches... Review: I'm starting to really become a fan of Palahniuk, but I'm not really there yet. I love Fight Club the film, but not the novel. I like the novel, but the film's braver than the novel and actually better. Survivor is a better novel, braver and darker, more exploritory of the heart of the characters and their intentions. It's a good read, and probably the best novel he's written so far (I have yet to read Choke), but I'm starting to wonder whether if he's got it in him to finish his evolution as a writer, and become what he really can be: the Vonnegut of Generation X. Right now he's stradling the line, gaining momentum... but I can't see if he's going to make it. Pick up the book. See if he's the voice that will speak for us.
Rating: Summary: The book after Fight Club Review: I recommend this book to any one who thouroly enjoyed Fight Club the novel and movie.
