Rating: Summary: Couldn't Put it Down!! Review: This was an awesome book. It is so deep and has so mush meaning. I got so attached to Peekay and couldn't stop reading. I did it over the summer for highschool and a book half as long took more time. I only wish i knew his real name. I guess that isn't really relevant to the book anyway.
Rating: Summary: Compelling and illuminating Review: The Power of One is a very compelling and intriguing story. As you can tell from other reviews, it often changes the lives of those who read it. The book is very empowering to the individual indeed. But beyond that it also illuminates much about the origins of fear and hatred. Against the backdrop of P.K.'s story of triumph, the reader can actually learn a great deal about some history of the numerous conflicts in South Africa's past and present. The conflicts are presented in a very real, accurate and understandable manner. (In other words, they are NOT an outsider's stereotypical extrapolation of what went on.) A South African friend of mine who does not care to read novels claims this is the only book he has ever read.
Rating: Summary: A book that will change your life forever! Review: This book grabs you from the very beginning and pulls you into the sad yet ultimately triumphant tale of Peekay. Courtenay brilliantly develops all of his characters (My favorite is the professor.)and teaches us the tenacity and endurance of the human will. This book gives courage to the underdogs and the underprivileged. I have given this book to a number of students and friends and every single one has been changed by the experience. Of all the books I have recommended to my students, this one gets the best reviews by far. It should be a part of the school curriculum. Warning: Courtenay's other books fall far short of the superiority of this work. This book should NEVER be compared to the movie with the same name. The movie pales in comparison.
Rating: Summary: A Great story about the power of the individual!! Review: First off, the book The Power Of One is a great read!!! Bryce Courtney has an easy to read writting style, he brings you into South Africa, places you beside the characters and you can't help but get caught up in the story. The Power Of One is about the Individual being important, how everybody has the power to make a difference in this world. As for the ending, it couldn't have been any better!!! When I finished the book, I had a big smile on my face and I said, "now that was an awsome book!" Read it, you'll really enjoy it and you will understand why it has so many great reviews on this site!
Rating: Summary: incredibly moving, very real, best i've ever read!!!! Review: I borrowed this book from a friend when i was living in canada. It blew me away!! I now live in the Netherlands and I still haven't given it back. Ive read it about ten times, and every time I finish reading it, I feel like reading it again. It's so real! I really start sharing the pain, the triumph, and the growth of Peekay when I get into the book. I saw the movie a while ago, and it just made me mad!! How could they totally screw up such a great novel?? Mr. Courtenay, please sue those people!! I can't imagine you're satisfied with the movie. The Power of One is definitely worth reading over and over and over again!!!
Rating: Summary: This book changed my life! Review: When my parents were getting a divorce I was going through some very hard times. My older brother gave me his copy to read. Now at age 18, my brother never received his copy back and I read parts of The Power of One almost every day. Peekay is like a hero to me. THe fact that he was able to overcome so much striff and still survive have made me realise that if I set my mind ot accoplishing a goal, anything can happen including myself becoming the welterweight champion of the world if my heart so desires. B.C. is a great author and in my opinion a great man. What I wouldn't give to meet him one day. The Power of One is the best book I have ever read. For all of those who haven't read it yet, read it tomorrow you won't regret it despite what some may say.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST FICTION I'VE READ Review: The Power of One blew me away. I normally prefer non-fiction, but this book is the exception. Following Peekay's life is a joy. Sharing his triumphs and pain is so real. Courtenay opens so many doors to your senses, I could hardly contain myself. I wish it would not have ended...in fact, upon completion I returned to page one without putting the book down. This book is so good you will seek out the sequal, Tandia so you can find out where Peekay goes next. The Power of One is an unbelievable story, of unbelievable courage.
Rating: Summary: A book for everyone!!! Review: I first read this book during the 5th grade and it touched me like nothing I'd ever read before. I read it again and again, and each time getting more out of it. you feel like you are realy there, breathing each moment with Pekay as he struggles with himself and with the world. READ IT!!!!! you won't be able to put it down.
Rating: Summary: Powerful, moving book Review: This is truly one of the best books I have ever read. The story is powerful and moving, and I read this book almost non-stop. It is a book not to miss, especially to broaden one's viewpoint of the plight of South Africa. I would suggest this book to anyone--the message is strong and the story is wonderful. (A word to the wise: if you read the book, stay far away from the movie).
Rating: Summary: Amazing story I recommend to everyone who is seeks reality. Review: The Power of One became my favorite book the instant I finished it the first of 5 times. Not only does it tell a superb story that opens up people's hearts, but it opens your eyes to the realities this world often hides. I chose this one as my favorite also because my childhood is almost a perfect reflection of Peekay's; difficult, poor, and cruel until the early years of junior high. If only Courtenay would finish the story with a second book and answer some things that were left to decide by the reader. Never-the-less, the book will forever leave an unforgettable feeling in your heart. And, in my mind, The Power Of One should be added to the reading criteria in high school english classes.
