Summary: I have only one problem with this book...
Review: ...I've read it so many times that almost every page in the last section is falling out, and believe me, it's a pain to have to put the last hundred pages or so in order to reread your favorite book. But this one's worth it.

I saw the last hour or so of the movie and was transfixed, and so I bought the book. Then I saw the movie again, and I didn't like the changes any more--the book was so simple, so succinct, so perfect in its narrative frankness, that the changes they added to the movie (e.g., a love interest) could only take away from the power of Courtenay's story.

Specifics--a young boy growing up in South Africa in the infancy of apartheid straddles the boundaries between academic success, athletic honors, and a driving conviction to deal with the forces of racism and discrimination in the best way he knows how--and he succeeds in all three. Trite? Hardly. Peekay is characterized brilliantly, and the supporting players--Doc, Morrie, et al--are believably complex. You'll become almost as attached to them as you do to Peekay. Courtenay achieves a tour de force I've probably never seen matched in contemporary prose.

This is one I've recommended to almost everyone I know, and I know a lot of people :). Do yourself a favor and *read this book*. I guarantee you, you'll be glad you did.

Summary: Just read it
Review: One of the best books I have ever read, and after meeting BC himself, I feel that there is level of integrity and sincerity in his work that I will respect for years to come. The cerebral crowd will (and have) hated this - I have read a lot of comments cutting this book to shreds, and I wonder why - read 'Brideshead revisted?' HELLO? Hey, just enjoy this fabulous novel for what it is!! Amidst the sea of literary dung out there, this novel stands up very well amongst the best of 'em. Everyone that I have lent this novel too loved it (and who the heck is Bryce?) - his novels should have more exposure in the US, as he is certainly a good writer.

Summary: The Best Book I Have Ever Read
Review: This book has moved into the number 1 spot of all the books I have ever read. I am 37 years old and my favorites before were "Catcher in the Rye" and "Watership Down". To read a book like this now is an awesome feeling and I encourage everyone in the teenage years and older to read this book.

Review: There actually is a sequel to "The Power of One", its called "Tandia". Unfortunately its only available through British Press. It is well worth the effort to obtain a copy....all your questions will be answered.

Summary: A must read for every man, woman, and child of any race
Review: When my girlfriend first asked me what my favorite book was, I said without hesitation "The Power of One". I have read it at least 5 times, and finally on the last reading I did not cry.... and I am not an emotional person!! What an amazing story of true passion, the passage into adulthood, the history of South Africa, race relations, etc. I have just one regret: there is no sequel I know of. Would Peekay, in having faced and fought his true demons, also lose his will to win in the ring? What happened to Hoppie? When Peekay dies, will he return to the Crystal Cave with Doc?

Summary: It WAS a good ending!
Review: This book should be an inspiration to anyone who has ever been bullied or felt alone in the world. The thing that puzzles me, though , is that most of the people said it wasn't a good way to end the book. Although the author didn't say it, you knew that PK was going to become welterweight champion. He had achived all of the other things that he wanted to in life and this was a goal that was within reach. He always had a feeling inside him that told him that he would be able to get revenge on all of the people that wronged him. In the end, PK even said that the lonliness birds were gone out of his heart, along with the stone, cold eggs. All that was left was a stream of cool water running through his heart. In case anyone forgot, the water was his one sactuary that no one could ever take away from him. His heart was truly happy now. It was an amazing ending.
