Summary: When WASN'T she undone?
Review: I am a big reader, and when I picked this up I expected it to be a beautifully written, charming story... considering how captivated I am with Oprah. However the characters in this novel have all gone to hell in back. Without a loveable character in the bunch, and most of them with broken, miserable lives it just leaves you with a feeling of remorse for the entire human race! Looking at other reviews written by others on this same page, they refer to this book as 'real', and 'tells it like it is'. Now that's down right depressing! This book is definetly different... but for me, that 'different is not the kind I prefer, or consider interesting. Go ahead and read it, just know that it's not a happy, fun, book. If I would compare it to another book I've read I'd have to say it would be another Oprah Books club book, "What looks like crazy on an ordinary day". Come on Oprah, enough of the downers.

Summary: False advertising
Review: This was an airport purchase, based on the jacket notes stating it was "comical...hilarious...a heroine to cheer for". I waded through this absolutely dreadful book over the next several days out of sheer determination to find the redeeming qualities. There were none. There is not one single positive quality in the heroine, any other characters, or the book itself. If you're not already clinically depressed, this book may help you get there. It reeks.

Summary: good surprise
Review: I did not intend to read this book, instead a friend who had purchased it insisted that I would love it. She was right because I did enjoy it. I was glad that I took the time to read something that initially did not appeal to me.... Happy reading.

Summary: Amazing-Wonderful rendition of growing up!
Review: This book was so hard to put down. I found it truly amazing that this book was written by a man. The accuracy of growing up from a small girl to a woman was totally how life really is. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to others.

Summary: This is the absolute worst book I have ever read!
Review: I could not believe this book was on the Oprah book list! This is the first book I read from the Oprah list, and it will be my last! I had to finish the book to see if there was a "normal ending", but of course it was just as bad! It gave me awful nightmares! Delores should haver killed herself at the beginning of the book so I wouldn't have wasted my time finishing it!

Summary: he understands
Review: What amazed me most about this book is the ability for Wally Lamb, a male, to really understand what a woman feels...in many different instances. This book is an incredible journey through thick and thin, and how Dolores, the heroine, overcomes the obstacles and finally finds some kind of peace. I recommend this book to everyone.

Summary: Wonderful, real!
Review: This was an extraordinary book, told by an extraordinary author. It's so hard to imagine that a man wrote this. He touches upon so many obstacles a young (overweight) woman faces along her journey through life. Dolores, while sometimes aggravating, had a wonderful "voice" in this novel. This is the first of the "Oprah" books that I have liked. I have spread the word, and encouraged all I know to read on! I could not put this down, and looked forward to reading it daily, and was somewhat sad when I turned my last page.

Summary: Personal triumphs and bitter realities
Review: I received this book as a gift. I usually don't like it when other people think they know what I'll enjoy reading, but this time I'm glad I was wrong. My mother-in-law, a big Oprah fan, saw this book on her show and got it for me. I was pregnant at the time and highly emotional, but couldn't put it down anyway, despite the highly volatile nature of some of the subject matter. Dolores Price is a character that is explored in great depth. Childhood disappointments and tragedies lead to a bitter perspective on life in general for this young girl. As the reader follows her into adulthood, the series of personal changes and life events she sees are difficult to escape. Wally Lamb has written a beautiful book and his perspective on the female psyche is uncanny. This is obviously a man with a great deal of respect for women and the variety of challenges we face. Dolores Price is both a heroine and ironically, someone to be pitied at times as well. Her journey will reel you in...

Summary: She's come unread
Review: It's hard to tell if this author dislikes men or women more. From a painful portrayal of a astonishingly dysfunctional family to the sputtering end this book grinds on and on. Almost no-one is likable in this story, especially the heroine. There should be a truth in advertising clause for book jackets that state: "...often stirring and hilarious book" What's hilarious? A self-destructive teenager whose every adult influence betrays her with their selfishness? And so it goes. I did finish the book, in the vain hopes that there would be some redeeming grace in the story.

Summary: Where was this book when I was younger?
Review: I remeber when I was in eigth grade and my favorite thing to do was just READ. It took me away from my life. But, the Jr. High library didn't carry books that related to me (i.e. Judy Blume books like, "Forever" or "are You There God? It's Me Margaret?") It really upset me that I couldn't have these books to help me through what was going on in my life. My parents had just divorced and womanhood was coming like a freight train on hot tracks, I was scared. I needed something. After reading lame books they assigned to us, that to me at the time were old, stuffy, and boring, I stopped reading. YEEEAAARRS later,I was flipping channels, caught Oprah talking about this book, went out and with the little bit o' cash I had, bought it. I didn't read it until a year later, sumtimes things happen when they're supposed to, they just fall into yer life, lap, and hands. I had just finished Alice Walker's, "The Color Purple" an wanted to stay in that feeling. So, I picked up this book. I felt like I was reading my life on those pages. I was the fat girl, (like Delores) in school, alot of it had to do with misplacing my emotions about my parents just like Delores. Feeling like everyone is staring at what u buy for lunch. Staring when walk anywhere. Being made fun of constantly through out yer life makes u very bitter to the point you can't taste what sweet is anymore. This book made me look, really look at myself, my parents and my weight. I know this isn't really a review, but I wanted to share this with someone. So, if any of u out there have kids...please don't let them make fun of people that are different, it really would save alot of us good years and money on therapy. thank you for reading this. Go read the BOOK!
