Rating: Summary: swirls of emotion Review: I had been recommended "She's Come Undone By Wally Lamb,by a couple of friends who told me it was a amazing book that I had to read. The book is about a girl named Dolores Price who faces some very extreme things while growing up.By the time Dolores reaches thirteen she begins to take comfort in boxed desserts, peanut-butter, roast beef and t.v. She drowns all her problems in food, which then gives her a even bigger problem by the time Dolores reaches adulthood she weighs in at 257 pounds. Lamb covers forty years of Dolores life and the people she meets along the way. Dolores goes through more then anyone can imagine or would want to . You name it she'd been there done that.I'm sure many people can relate to the story in someway. Such as dealing with parents who don't understand you , weight issues and depression , many people can relate to those problems, but as she gets older Price faces many problems that no one should ever deal with. I found myself not able to put down the book. It was the greatest thing I had ever read. It was amazing to me that Mr.Lamb could capture the voice of a girl growing up to be a women and make it come to life.I recommend this book to everyone. This book is about overcoming the impossible and just when you think you've lost hope things work out .
Rating: Summary: She Came Back Together Again! Review: I could hardly believe that this book was written by a man! Wally Lamb captured some of the most intimate details that women go through. This is a must read for anyone who thinks that he or she cannot go on with the way that their lives are going. This is truly inspirational ficton at its ultimate best. I think that Wally Lamb is sure to develop new stories that will continue to touch our hearts and our souls.
Rating: Summary: Interesting and Gripping Review: I thought the book She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb was so interesting and gripping at points. Once I started reading I didn't want to put the book down. I like the way it was written in that it seemed like she (Dolores) was actually talking to us and seemed so real. I think this book is worthwhile reading and recommend it to others. However, it does have some adult language and references.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: This is an awesome book, and should be read by all. Firstly, I feel inclined to mention though that I feel a touch distressed that in 90% of reviews for this work I have read there is always a mention of the work by John Irwing. Numerous comparisons have been written regarding Dolores Price as the next T.S Garp, and many reviews rate She's Come Undone as a tale that matches Owen Meany. Wally Lamb has crafted a superb novel, but this book is not in the league of Owen Meany and Garp. For his first novel Wally Lamb has done a tremendous job, and he is well on the way to matching Irwings classics, but he is not their just yet. The way Wally lamb has created all of the characters is amazing. Although on so many occasions you want to tell Dolores to get a life and open her eyes your heart goes out to her and attaches to the cruelty she has habit of stumbling into. The sub-characters are equally well developed, some (like Rita) remain quite illusive, when others (like Dante & Roberta) provide the book with so much life and enrichment. A truly wonderful book, worth all five stars, roll on Wally.
Rating: Summary: Almost Heart Warming Review: Smooth, easy prose draws the reader into the story with little effort. With a protagonist that is at the same time despicable and lovable, Lamb offers the best of both worlds!
Rating: Summary: Very entertaining! Review: This is one of the best books I've ever read. Mr. Lamb captures the teenage girl's perspective wonderfully! It just keeps getting better. I found myself cheering her on through all of the troubles. I have recommended this book to everyone I know!
Rating: Summary: *Lamb recognizes a woman's triumph perfectly!* Review: This novel is an excellent awakening for those who are not appreciative of all that they have. After reading this excellent novel, I realized how satisfying my life is. I know that everyone will agree that this book puts your entire life in order and demands that you be thankful for all that you have! Whenever I am feeling conquered by this materialistic world, I will turn to this novel for comfort. I encourage everyone to seek this novel for a refreshing view of reality! You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: She is Far Overdone Review: We attempt to find venues of criticism within the menagerie of typical teenage girl magazines, blaming the publications of superficiality and over-obsession with the materialistic world and physical appearance. Search no farther for the ultimate scapegoat of complaint, for out in publication right now is the epitome of shallow literature, which in its essence, manages to capture a compulsive fixation of personal presentation. The book is a work of fiction about a child who grows into a two hundred and fifty-pound woman; the book is an obese woman's lamentations of her weight. Yes, all 465 pages of the novel are written from the perspective of this depressing, extremely unrealistic, and mentally disturbed woman. There does not seem to be any reward in reading this long tale of Dolores's self-inflicted mental abuse and battles with her obesity. The extremely shallow content of the book leads the reader to ponder the intellectual aspects of life, and how logical thought processes seem to escape from the grasp of the size-challenged woman. Dolores is portrayed as a helpless, deceitful, and highly pathetic woman who finds herself stranded in a world far too fast paced for her level of intellect. The way that Dolores is caught in a realm of fixation with weight only serves to annoy the reader with her lack of a grasp on her surroundings and her far-fetched reactions to things she encounters in the novel. Wally Lamb, instead of telling a story of a woman with realistic problems and dealing with these within the confines of the "real world," manages to create a female of extremely weak persona and hardly any character development beyond frivolous details of the woman's thoughts. She seems intent on victimizing herself continuously throughout the duration of the novel, a highly depressing addition to the plot that only helps to further deteriorate the reader's opinion of the character and ends in a morass of far-fetched opinion. This book is a saddening quagmire of every impossible depressing occurrence that can happen to a soul. As well, Wally Lamb's lack of creativity and imagination is evident in the numerous times Dolores compares herself to a whale: I beg for a more cliché comparison and a phrase even more derogatory to the population of overweight citizens. Wally Lamb's misogynistic outlook is oblivious to the true character of women, and has taken the liberty of making many melodramatic assumptions of the female disposition, stereotyping females as intellectually subordinate and forever enraptured by concerns of appearance and producing a novel of dull, highly unfavorable drivel.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: I have read some of the other reviews and I am stunned that there are actually people who didn't like this book. It's one of the best I have ever read. Dolores is a real person, has real, true-to-life crisis and possesses just the right amount of self loathing and optimism to pull this off. Had I read this book not knowing the auther was a male, it would have been a fantastic story, but knowing that Mr. Lamb can get inside the female's psyche so well makes this story seem flawless. I raise my glass to you, Mr. Lamb, and look forward to more of the same.
Rating: Summary: Overwhelmingly Beautiful Review: I had lost sight of what reading is all about, but then I found She's Come Undone. Dolores price and I are two completely different individuals, yet the strength she demonstrated helped me find strength in myself that I never knew existed. This book is for anyone who has ever faced adversities and sorrow. Wally Lamb writes in an extraordinarily realistic manner which affected my emotions in a way that made me both cry, laugh, and throw the book down in anger. I have never read a book that compares to the feeling I was left with after reading She's Come undone.
