Summary: More exciting than it may sound
Review: Pirates and privateers?

Didn't sound too interesting to me who am not normally interested in historical themes. Though, I had to buy a book for the beach in Rhodos, Greece, when I quickly finished the Wilbur Smith book "Power of the sword". Having that book in mind, I still bought "Birds of prey" because it was written by Wilbur Smith. And now, well, I'm only waiting for his next book, continuing where "Birds of Prey" finished...

Summary: Take to the High Seas for adventure and love
Review: Yet another smashing adventure that truly captured my imagination. A very fullfilling story that has many twists and turns in the life of young Hal Courtney. I was transported back in history and can still smell the salt in the air and taste the rum on my lips. God what I would give to meet Nazet, I will dream about her for many evenings to come. If your seek adventure this book will satisfy your hunger.

Summary: What a magnificent book!!!
Review: Wilbur Smith has become one of my favorite authors. "Birds of Prey" was packed full of action, adventure, and romance. What more could one want in a novel! Much attention was given to detail. Be prepared to have your nautical dictionary at hand. Hal Courtney and the other charcters were developed in such a way that the reader has a genuine interest in their well-being. The plot is fast paced and keeps you turning the pages. I highly recommend this book, as well as, "Elephant Song", "River God", and "The Seventh Scroll". I can't wait to read the next Wilbur Smith novel.

Summary: Long live the Courteneys
Review: This novel showcases Smith's many natural talents. His characters are always bold, grand figures who make us try to better ourselves. Hal is filled with the indomitable spirit that Sean Courteney ehxibited in "When the Lion Feeds", and Aboli is loyal to the end. Birds of Prey is a fast paced adventure that will transport you into one of the most exciting eras ever experienced. Get ready to purchase your eye-patch and cutlass before you start Wilbur Smith's latest thriller.

Summary: Takes on water page one, sinks by page fifty.
Review: Set in the world of piracy in the 17th century, Birds of Prey trips up early. Hardly surprising, when in this masculine world you've still got women 'screaming wildly and clutching their bosoms' at the sound of gunfire. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't, but the prose is more painful than any blast of grapeshot. There are far too many examples of school play dialogue to list, but if you're looking for an exciting seafaring tale, you'd do much better to turn to 'The Golden Ocean' by Patrick O'Brian.
