Summary: A little bit of a letdown...
Review: I guess my anticipation was too great.....this was a well written book, yes, but a little too difficult for me to plow through. Wonderful descriptions of island life, the war period, farming and fishing but the story itself plodded along. Matter of fact, I had the Fraser on during the final chapter and kept tuning myself to the television. For people who enjoyed this book, I would suggest a book called Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis De Berniers. A love story from a Greek island during the war. If you liked Snow Falling on Cedars, you'll love this!!

Summary: The story was fascinating and I loved the book.
Review: In 1950 I married a man who was born in the San Juan Islands. We were married there and spent a great deal of time on their Island farm,so I can relate to the descriptions; both of the people and the place. Granted, in the book, the author creates a fictional island, but he captures the essence of the locality so well you can almost smell the mud flats and the seaweed. I just finished reading the book for the second time and enjoyed it even more the second time around. The descriptions of the feelings about the Japanese during World War 2 were very accurate. The author did a lot of research into the history of the area and I think he wrote a remarkable book. I read a great deal and I can"t remember when I've read a book I enjoyed any more. As a person who enjoys mysteries, sea stories and love stories this was a great combination.

Summary: breathtaking
Review: With Snow Falling On Cedars, David Guterson has demonstrated an extreme mastery of his craft. The language was beautifully evocative; the characters were believable, and the conflict was credible in the context of history. I wholeheartedly recommend this novel to any true lover of literature.

Summary: A disappointing read!
Review: I didn't recognize this book as the same one who received the glowing reviews and literary awards. I felt it was painfully slow moving. I finished it but did not enjoy the experience.

Summary: Memorable - Evokes the period and the people beautifully
Review: I found this book to be a rich evocation of the period and people of the area where it takes place and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in a compelling drama that has a positive ending. The experience of the Japanese immigrants and their families was particularly poignant, as was the description of the work of the local fishermen.

I would not characterize the book as one of the best ever written, however, primarily because of the way it ended. The racism of the case was described well throughout the book but I couldn't quite believe the way that racism was used to resolve the story, particularly the actions/inactions of the defendant. The sort of "feel good" ending that resulted was not nearly as delicately done as the rest of the story, which is why I give it 3 stars.

Summary: Terrible
Review: This was a terrible book. I read it and It was mediocre. i was expecting a surprise ending but it turned out not to be a mystery at all. the imagerie was the only good thing about the book.

Summary: A good summer read for school!
Review: During the summer I was given a choice of books to read. On the bottom of this list was Snow Falling on Cedars, I had never heard of the author before and it was the longest book on the list. I decided to give it a chance and I am now really glad I chose it. The book surprised me after a hard first 4 chapters, it really began to pick up and I became spellbound by the trial and the characters. At the end of the book I was sad to leave the island behind and all the new people I had met over the week process of reading it. If you are given this book to read don't be disheartened at the size of it, the book will keep you involved and interested. The characters are amazing people and the many plots will take you on interesting adventures with many themes. These mini stories deal with topics of teen maturity and romance, there is also themes about World War II. This book has things for all different types of readers.

Summary: Read this book
Review: I had to read this book for summer reading. However I found it very well written. The story is about a japenese-American who is accused of killing a fisherman named carl. The accused man's name is Kabou and he and Carl were childhood friends. However the war (World War 2) has pulled the to friends apart. The whole island were the story takes place thinks that Kabou killed Carl. This is a story about perjust. Only a newspaperman who wishs to win the faver of his high school sweetheart. Who just happens to be the wife of Kabou. The book takes many different points of view with many different substorys giving each characters a 3D feel. In the end the writter pulls everything together nicely. You almost feel as if you are in the story.

Summary: It was an ok book
Review: This book was ok, but it got way to detailed on things that we really didn't need to know to an extent. At one point it had like a whole chapter on japenese ancestery.

Summary: Good Book From A Good Author
Review: The movie is coming out this Christmas starring Ethan Hawke, I think. The book itself was very enjoyable. It captures you from the first page and draws you into the place and plot. It was atmospheric, much like Annie Dillards "The Living" in that I felt that I was there. I enjoyed it but I hoped that the solution to the problem would have been more explosive some how. Other than that, I highly recommend it!
