Rating: Summary: Three words: Funny, brilliant, awesome Review: I loved Mr. Maybe. From the time I picked up the book I couldn't set it down, and to me, thats when you know its going to be a great book. This book reminds me so much of what my life is like, without the british accent, and it actually helped put a lot of things in perspective. I highly recomend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh, is having relationship problems or is just looking for a good book to read.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down! Review: I loved this book and couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting. It is a perfect light, entertaining read for the summer. I actually reread it recently.
Rating: Summary: Disturbingly shallow Review: If I could have given this book 0 stars, I would have. What sort of message is this author trying to send when happy endings only come to the thin and beautiful? When I picked up this book, I was expecting the exact opposite message. This book seems to encourage women to strive for anorexia, as is demonstrated from some of the reviews already posted. In addition, the writing style is annoying at best. Don't waste your time, unless you spend 5 hours a day on the stairmaster and only eat lettuce and need fuel for your fantasy that torturing yourself will bring you happiness.
Rating: Summary: AvidReader Review: I loved this book. A friend loaned me her copy and I enjoyed it so much, I bought my own ... and this coming from someone who does NOT enjoy re-reading books. Classic story about an ugly duckling who comes into her own. The average woman will relate, commiserate and rejoice with the heroine. Riveting at every page and impossible to put down. Not the Great American Novel but a very fun ride! I was almost finished with my Londoner 'singleton' book phase but this book made me a big Jane Green fan.
Rating: Summary: Inconsistent Review: I thought there were some very good parts of the book. I loved the beginning and the description of her life while being overweight. But beyond this, the book just went on too many cliche paths, I guess in an attempt to keep the book fast paced and commercial. I wish there was more of the beginning effort in descibing her weight loss and the emotional issues that go with that. I didn't believe the author knew that much about Britain & their dialect. I was very annoyed by the California references. It mentions that both Jemima and Ben couldn't find a book at the Santa Monica Barnes & Noble b/c it only had books on filmmaking?? Is this an attempt at humor? I live down the street from that bookstore and I know that's a pretty ridiculous statement. I don't understand why there are so many Santa Monica restaurant/store references. It seems like that would be very boring to the non-Los Angeles reader. Plus, there's something very annoying about all that name dropping, then trashing the city as shallow and vain. Wow!? Los Angeles is a vacuous, awful city...that's a clever, new concept. Anyway, I'm becoming negative. The book was a fast read & it did keep my interest....obviously it really sparked my interest if I'm writing this lengthy, "War and Peace" review of it.
Rating: Summary: Jane Green's books are the best! Review: I absolutely loved this book and found it extremely hard to put down. I loved everything about it, and actually found myself becoming the character. The book puts you in the best mood, and makes you feel like you can do anything. This is a must read!!!
Rating: Summary: As entertaining as promised. Review: I was promised by Amazon reviewers that this book would make me laugh out loud, and that I would not be able to put it down. And indeed I laughed out loud and was not able to put it down - I read it in 2 days. Some of the plot lines I found a tad unbelievable (such as Jemina's losing the weight as fast as she did, and especially Brad, the internet guy's secret. . .never mind, you have to read the book or I'll give it away) but overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a light, frothy summer read.
Rating: Summary: Let's here it for Jemima Jones Review: Jemima Jones: she's a hero for all the Jane Does out there. The average woman knows what it is like to not be accepted in the "in-crowd", or to not be loved back by the hunk at work. Sometimes not even to be acknowledged. Jemima made her own destiny, and I can assure you, it will leave you cheering. A true inspiration.
Rating: Summary: Jemima J Review: This was a cute, fun book to read but HIGHLY unrealistic. It's purpose is to send a message about feeling good about yourself etc., but seems only able to deliver it by Jemima being thin and more like an anorexic than anything else. However, it is a cute book and a fun read if you don't take it too seriously.
Rating: Summary: Great beach read Review: Trashy, superficial, but fun. Don't take it too seriously & you'll enjoy it.
