Rating: Summary: You've gotta love Jemima J!!! Review: When I read the first line of this book I was hooked. I could not put it down. It was funny, sad, inspirational, and just plain GOOD. I look forward to reading all of Jane Green's books.
Rating: Summary: great light reading Review: I really enjoyed this book. It hooked me from the very beginning. I learned of this book in a list entiled Beyond Bridget Jones....and I'm so glad I looked at that list. Jemima is a heroine I could really root for, and identify with. I could relate to how she felt living life as a larger woman, and the way you still feel even after losing the weight. I've already shared this book with a friend of mine, and she is enjoying it as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: This is such an awesome book! Review: I have read this book so many times and I'm still not sick of it! I love Jemima Jones and this book has inspired me to get my act together, start working out to be healthy and in shape, and reach for the stars. Anything is possible and this book tells you all!
Rating: Summary: Obviously beauty (is in the eye of the beholder! Review: I don't care what any of the other reviews say- I loved this book. In fact, while in my entire life I've never read an entire book- this one had me staying up through an entire night to read..and finish! Perhaps it's because I'm just a young, college student, but I was just reading this for fun, not to critique society's flaws. I found it fun, romantic and easy to read. Sure, there may have been a few minor details left out, or argueable, but it's not meant to be a classic. It's just a fun book to read when you need a break. So, don't listen to all these people who seem to be a little too disturbed by this, and obviously take life way too seriously!
Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: I bought this book by chance when it caught my eye at a bookstore. I'm so happy I did buy it because it was a wonderful story and a real page turner. I felt the book was very well written and I really got to know the characters. Sure, it might be a little far fetched, but it's supposed to be fairy-tale like and it also has a good message similar to that of the Wizard of Oz, "I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I shouldn't look any farther than my own back yard. Because if it isn't there, then I never really lost it to begin with."
Rating: Summary: Well Written, feel good novel! Review: This novel is one of those books that makes you feel all happy when you get through reading it. The character Jemima J is overwieght. She has a desperate crush on the editor, Ben, at the newpaper she writes for, but he fancies her slim blonde friend. Ben and Jemima become friends when he confides in her about a serious career move. Thats when she starts to lose weight, 10 pounds to begin with. Ben leaves the paper to move on to his new job, and Jemima is left feeling lonely. Jemima Jemima J has all the feelings that I do about myself. I would vow each day, that this day would be the day that my diet would start. She finally gets a handle on exactly what shes going to do, and begins an extreme eating and workout regimine. She eventually tumbles to 121 pounds. There is a lot gong on in book as it moves, and its all very interesting and funny at the same time. Wihle it mainly stays with Jemima, it does switch poitns of view, which i found nice and not in any way confusing. Yes, there are some very small unrealistic factors here, but its just a book. It made me feel good about the size i am and made me realize that I am fine looking how i do. I think thats the real messege in the book, that being thin is not everything, nor will it get you everything. It was a simply delightful book, and I have already reccomened it to many of my friends.
Rating: Summary: Shallow and pointless Review: I was interested in this story because I too had lost a large amount of weight. I found the story dreadful. Ben was simply a joke, supposedly a regular guy, not into superfical fluff, but why was his dream job to be a TV anchorman? And all the men who noticed Jemima when she was 121 lbs, thinking she was incredibly good looking, admiring her toned body, including Ben, though, according to our narrator, she is supposed to be at an unhealthy weight? It's just too many mixed messages, and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
Rating: Summary: Agree with others Review: I agree with the 1 star raters out there about how Green doesn't address the rapid weight loss, how Jemima ultimately must lose weight in order to get her man...or did she? Might've been nice or even more fairy-tale like if we'd seen that she didn't have to lose weight because Ben really seemed like he could've developed into a deeper character, but we'll never know. I also agree in that at 5'7", 217 lbs, that's hardly face-distorting or blob-like. I think 120 would be much more cause for alarm, but that's just me, maybe it's different for Euros, maybe Jemima had small bones. I also agree that I didn't like the switching from 1st to 3rd person. Not because it was all that confusing, but because it did too much leading and explaining. I think that's why Brigid Jones is such a good read, it's all Brigid's perception of things. We don't need "fate" or Green stepping in to tell us what to think. I give the book 2 stars because I do see some honesty there about how people judge others on appearance, how people envy others or long for things they've never had, but had it not been for that 1 star would've been more appropriate.
Rating: Summary: A pleasant surprise Review: I was not 100% sold on this book when I first started reading it...first the narration switches from first to third person with out much warning (not a big fan of that style), BUT I got used to it. Then I realized how endearing of a character Jemima (JJ) was...this is a great book in the vein of Bridget Jones. The story never gets preachy, but when you finish you are left with the age old lesson of beauty is only skin deep. Jemima was always beautiful, 100 pounds over weight or not. There are some unpredictable plot twists which keep you reading. A good, quick light read.
Rating: Summary: Started out good.... Review: I really enjoyed this book in the beginning although it was not a "page turner", I enjoyed Greens writing style and I liked the main character Jemima. But it seemed to loose something along the way, frankly the story got dumber (is that a word?) and dumber as the chapter numbers rose. Alas I only had about 75 pages until the end and I thought the turn of events with the "gorgeous guy" in L.A. was more then I could stomach i.e what she finds in his closet and his "arraingement" with his fat girlfriend,(Really.....please), so I put the book down not to finish the last 70 pages. Although I did look ahead at the last chapter to see how it ended. I know she tried to throw in a "morale" to the story but its just does not work. Teenage girls may well like this book.
