Rating: Summary: "A Unique Author" Review: After reading Nine Stories, I felt Salinger is a sensational writer because of what he uses. Salinger uses third person omniscient to help the reader distinguish the difference between the characters feelings and emotions. It makes it easier to follow along with the plot. Salinger also uses great symbolism in his short stories. For example, he uses a boat to symbolize peace and quietness in the story, "Down at the Dinghy."
Rating: Summary: the best book by the best author Review: although i am only 13 i saw the power in this book to as i feel as far an extent as the highschoolers who read this for school. this book has been shunned far to much and needs to be opened by any adolescent, male or female, so that they can be shown that they are not alone in this world and there is other just like them. this is the best book for me. it is simply the best.
Rating: Summary: ultimate beauty and human nature Review: JD Salinger is perfect at capturing the most beautiful moments in life that no one ever notices. His stories seem abrupt to some, but they are designed that way. They show a single moment in someone's life that Meant something to them, and people entangled in their own human nature. These stories are beautiful. Please read this book.
Rating: Summary: No thanks Review: I loved The Catcher in the Rye, so I decided to read this book (I've just started Franny and Zooey) but this book disappointed me. The stories are just too complicated for me, and they seem to be pointless. You know nothing about anything when you start this book, so it's a complete waste of time, in my opinion. I guess maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough to read such a complex piece of work, but nonetheless, I wouldn't recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: A step below "catcher" Review: Salinger showed signs of the brilliance that was used througout "Catcher in the Rye." Although interesting, many of the stories failed to capture me the way "Catcher" did. However, his ability to capture many of the experiences, feelings, fears, and wonders of people continues to impress me. If you liked his other works, read it, but don't expect too much.
Rating: Summary: Yes, get it already! Review: Have you ever read "The Metamorphosis" or "The Trial" or any other Kafka works? Remember what you feel like at the end? You feel a vacuum in your chest because it ripped your soul out? That's what most of the stories in this book are like, with a couple exeptions. Oh, so nice!
Rating: Summary: What can I say? Review: One of the most ingenious books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. "Seymour" is the perfect example of a story giving back exactly what you put into it. I believe the greatest testament to this book is that there are 2 things that I not only will never forget, but which I use almost daily. First, I believe one of my all-time favorite characters is the little grinning man in the car. To this day I see him sitting politely and grinning ear to ear. Whenever I need a laugh, I think of him. The second, and most important element is from "Seymour" and his explanation to his brother about shooting marbles. If you get excited at hitting the mark, then somewhere inside, you didn't expect to hit it. When you KNOW you can hit it, you just do it, then go on with your life. Truer words have never been spoken. Thanks for the inspiration JD.
Rating: Summary: An OK Book Review: I had read Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye" as a recommendation from my parents. I really liked it so I read "Nine Stories" hoping it would be as good. Many of the stories were interesting enough, but the others were hard to get through. All of the nine stories were very well written with lots of detail, just dull. Maybe short stories aren't my thing because I wouldn't read it again. If you like other J.D. Salinger books, I think you should read it.
Rating: Summary: REQUIRED READING, EVERYONE! Review: It pains me to see it unread. I reach for a rusty cleaver when unappreciated.
Rating: Summary: Since when was an assigned reading this enjoyable? Review: I'm checking Amazon for bibliographical info on this book because I'm using a quote from "De-Daumier-Smith's Blue Period" which has come to be a favorite of mine..."The most singular difference between happiness and joy is that happiness is a solid and joy a liquid. Mine started to seep through its container as early as the next morning."
