Rating: Summary: Where's the movie! Review: Okay, I was a latecomer to this book. A friend gave it to me to read, since he liked it, too. If you want to read Jaws underground mixed with a little Jurassic Park, don't pass on this book. It starts with a bang and keeps rolling from there: Twists, turns, chases, cliffhanger, betrayal, mystery, and suspense. I want to see the movie! Also recommend anything by Lincoln Child/Douglas Preston. If you like their books, check out this new author. And, yes, Mr. Rollins, I went out and bought my own copy of your book to add to my personal library.
Rating: Summary: Challenging debute with too many flaws... Review: The pluses: the author wanted to create a speleological action thriller with some scientific background. As books on such a theme are rather rare - the plot is interesting, the mythology well invented, the beginning is intriguing, the pace is quick. There is some suspense, especially in the beginning, nut no terror and other horror whatsoever. The minuses: - book reminds an action movie script in language and in characters: "good guys" and, in particularly, one "bad guy" - of course an Arabian terrorist (!); rather blue print main heroes - Ashley, who's annoying and screams her head off without a reason especially in the beginning of the book and Mr Nice guy with blue eyes and troublesome past and with a hereditary telepathic link with the underground aborigines that of course saves everyone in the end. And there is also Ashley's son whose existence is justified by him getting kidnapped by the bad guy in the end of the book (to add suspense, undoubtedly.). - I agree with some other reviewers who note rather poor language of the book. Especially funny is when such words as "marsupials", "diatoms", "monotremes" etc pop up to add up a "scientific flavour" to this underground monster chase. Resume: a challenging attempt to create a "cave thriller", but as the book is too short, the plot is predictable and characters one dimensional. For beach reading try it, for some REAL STUFF - be glued to JEFF LONG's "DESCENT" and FEEL THE DIFFERENCE!

Rating: Summary: Fast Action, Somewhat Predictable, Disappointing Ending Review: My boyfriend and myself overall enjoyed the book. JR's story line moves smoothly, and his knowledge of caves is apparent in his work. Unfortunately, some of his plot was predictable, and I have to agree with a previous reviewer, he could have built a little more on some of the characters. The ending seemed to be lacking and not to the standard of the beginning of the book. I will, however, say JR's choice of story line is intriguing and we are looking forward to his next creation.
Rating: Summary: Reads like a child's imaginary tale Review: This book had the potential of being an engrossing read, but it pretty much fizzles out after the first 50 pages. I felt like I was listening to my 4 year old tell me a story. "... and then , they discover HUGE DIAMONDS, and then they discover HUGE MONSTERS, and then ..." Add to that a sickly-sweet attempt at a 'feel-good' ending, and you have the recipe for a waste of paper.
Rating: Summary: Read this book! Review: Subterranean is perhaps one of the greatest books that I had read. It has suspense, it has terror, it has elements to make you cry. I could barely put the book down! James Rollins has written a book that grabs at you, and holds you there till the book is done, an amazing adventure put into words. If you have read Wit'ch Fire, or his books under the name James Clemens, I can asure you that you'll love this book.
Rating: Summary: They descended into a mysterious world... Review: ...and got more than they bargained for! James Rollins is THE man! I swear this is one of the best novels I've ever read. I've read his other novels (I'm rewriting this review, as the first one was short and pathetic and not nearly worthy of the novel) and while they are good, this one takes the prize. Ashley Carter is picked to lead a team into the world beneath Antartica. Every person on the team is the best in their field, including the military escort. They are there because the first team vanished...and hasn't been heard from since. What they find will shock you and amaze you. The world below ours, painted beautifull by Rollins, is a wonderful place, yet filled with danger that lurks around every corner. And the mysteries keep piling up, and the screams begin echoing...and Carter must wonder what lies just ahead...or even further below. This is a terrific novel. Buy it right now! You won't regret it!
Rating: Summary: Not impressed Review: I thought this book got off to a good start and was a good read until the end. The ending seemed rushed.

Rating: Summary: SUBTERRANEAN WAS SO........... SUBPAR AND BORING ! Review: WARNING: This adventure was so boring. I struggled with the first 180 pages, and I had to let it fly to the trash can. I guess some people loved it. It was not worth it in my opinion. I would say that when the first book, of an author, does not come out in hard back first, the publisher does not have confidence in the product. I may say, at first, this book was moving along. It kept my interest all the way up to page 133. The main character, Ashley, the team leader, was doing very well. Then all of a sudden, JR made the adventure go deep underground. It dragged, and dragged. Weak characters blew it for this book. I understand JR next book will be EXCAVATION; due out JULY 2000. I will not look for this book guys. His new one will have to drop in my lap at the book store. Last words to you is, " borrow SUB from your buddy,".
