Rating: Summary: True Story-telling, at its best Review: An instant classic. This is a story that is meant to be read over and over, out loud, silently, in public, or in the comfort of one's own bed. The words flow and flow, lyrical and rhythmic, while spinning this beautiful fantasy. After reading the book, I find myself talking like the characters, chuckling to myself on the subway suddenly reminded of something in the book. In fact, when I was reading this book on the way to work, I had people come up to me and ask "How is that?" (Which is unheard of, especially for New York Commuters!). All I can say is, "Just Delightful. Highly Recommend you read it."
Rating: Summary: the greatest ever Review: this is a masterpeice you'll love every page funny and adventurou
Rating: Summary: A gentle and loving work. Review: An enchanting childrens' story that readers of any age will enjoy. This was the first Rushdie work that I read. It is a great primer of Rushdie's writing style, which, in it's dramatic changes of rhythm, setting, pace, and even language, can be a bit hard to follow to the unfamiliar reader. A future bedtime story for whenever I have children of my own....
Rating: Summary: A deep story for children Review: This book works simply as a beautiful fantasy story about a boy who saves a world of make believe, and can also be taken as a deeper meditation on creativity, the dangers of authoritarianism, the value and the honest weaknesses of democracy, the important of history, and the occasional importance of maintaining an illusion. It is easy to read, great for children, and illuminating for adults. An excellent introduction to Salman Rushdie.
Rating: Summary: How stories are supposed to work Review: This is another terrific story for those who loved the Polar Express. It is a imilar tale of adventure inside a story framework with real effects in the world outside. It is humorous in sophisticated ways, and meaningful. I highly recommend the book on tape, read by the author. I actually heard this before I read it, and Rushdie's narrative style is ideal for a story such as this. It's also my son's favorite story in the car
Rating: Summary: "A great book" he says without moving his lips Review: As a response to his critics and detractors, Mr. Rushdie has a crafted an enjoyable book full of energy, hope and wit. Yes the book has a fairy tale quality to it, but after all the book is about stories and so what better format than a world of pure imagination for this work?
Rating: Summary: ONE OF THE BEST TALES I'VE EVER READ! Review: ...this book displays Rushdie's versatility and creativity as a storyteller...a must-have for anyone who loves a touching and inspiring tale.
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Book Review: Though I have read and enjoyed novels from On the Road to The Shipping News to The Iliad, I keep coming back to this simple, charming, lucid masterpiece. The children-oriented theme might put off some adult readers, but not those who can still remember what it was like to be a child, to have hopes and dreams, and to want, even if you can't anymore, to believe in stories. I didn't believe that stories when I read Haroun, but more than any other book, it has made me see the power of a good story. It didn't change my life completely or anything nearly so drastic, but it did help to restore my faith in good books and fun stories and encouraged me to keep reading. I read it for the first time during my sophomore year in high school, and now as a college student, it remains my favorite. Please, read this book. You won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: I love this book Review: Even though the story is somewhat simple it is still intriguing and the clever use of language is fascinating, a must-read!
Rating: Summary: Best book I've ever read Review: Not just for children but a great book to read aloud to children. Entertaining, whitty and great fun.
