Rating: 5 stars
Summary: At least as good as "Mistress . . . " but different
Review: just when I thought it was going to be a well-written but predictable story - she did it again - not one but a couple of good turns - and as usual her turn of a phrase puts the reader in the "heart of the person" as well.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Fanastic! She has done it again!
Review: I am a dedicated fan of Ms. Divakaruni. I finished this book in less than 24 hours. And she has done it again. She speaks to women who are not just Indian but all women. The characters of this book speak to one's heart. The bond that they share seems like one in a million. She has beautifully portrayed these wonderful women yet AGAIN! I love it and I recommend it to anyone, men or women, as something you will pick up and not be able to put down!!

Summary: Loverly...
Review: This is the first book I've actually finished in quite a while. Even though I was a bit disappointed with Divakaruni's _Mistress of the Spices_, _Sister of My Heart_ spoke to me in a way that so-called "women's fiction" hasn't in a long time. I'm an only child, but I can understand the experience of sisterhood, which our other reviewer sites (and I too read it in one sitting). This is a story about the bond between women (mothers, daughters, cousins, sisters, friends, aunts, nieces) and what women will sacrifice to ensure the happiness of those they love. Anjali and Basudha grow from sheltered girls into women worldly in their own respects. Sudha shows that worldliness can even be gleaned from domesticity, at a price. Lovely, lovely. It even made me cry.

Summary: I would recommend this book .
Review: I have sisters. I know what my sisters mean to me. Perhaps, that is why I was so mesmerized by this book and read it all at one sitting. The bond of sisterhood is so clearly explicated and so wrenchingly portrayed that I found myself weeping copiously at several points in the story.

But, fear not. This is a great steam engine of a story and a joy to read. Two women, born on the same day their fathers (cousins) are killed, are raised in the same household and develop a love that supports and nourishes them through fortune and misfortune.

Summary: Amitav Ghosh, author of In An Antique Land
Review: "Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's account of family life in Bengal is warm and richly detailed. Hers is one of the most striking lyrical voices writing about the lives of Indian women today."

Summary: Our bookclubs favorite book
Review: This book is so moving. The best part is the surprise ending! Amazing, usually books are predictable but this book keeps you glued. I loved the details of life in India. So wonderfully warm...don't pass up the opportunity to read!

Summary: It was ok
Review: This book was a quick read. I really did enjoy the plot up until the arranged marriages of the two characters. The secret woven into the story was compelling and made the book more interesting than it would have been without it, and the best thing was the two female characters being portrayed as strong, independent women. From reading books like this one would swear that all Indian women are unhappy in their marriages, all Indian men are abusive and controlling, that kind of thing. But this does not reflect a flaw in the writing and story itself so I guess I can't rate on that. Strong characters and a strong plot make this worth reading.

Summary: Couldn't put it down!
Review: Since finishing this book I've loaned it to 3 other women who have also loved it. It left me wanting more.

Summary: Kept me Captivated
Review: This book is a story told by two 'sisters of the heart,' Anju and Sudha. The story starts out in the 80's, and the heroines live in an old-fashioned, tradition-following home in India. There are no men in the household, save the servants, as Sudha and Anju's fathers both disappeared years ago. As the two grow older, Sudha learns of a dark, family secret that taints almost every major decision she makes. After a cruel twist of fate one evening, Sudha lets go the idea of going to college and Anju, who has big dreams of going to college and managing her mother's bookstore, suffers a plight as well just soon after Sudha. Though this book did have one very unlikely line in the plot, it kept me captivated and the language was very beautiful.

Summary: One of my fav books!!!
Review: I loved Sister of My Heart....Its one of the most touching books I have read in awhile....I have highly recommended it to everyone I know....After reading this book, I wanted more...and was saddened when I turned the last page....However, I could not wait for the sequel Vine of Desires....and bought it the day it was released...and regretably, it turned out to be a huge dissapointment! Nothing even close to the first book.....
