Rating: Summary: A Big Dissapointment Review: "Nymph" was a huge dissapointment to me. I expected that there would be sex, but I was hoping it would at least be tastefull, magical...somewhat Francesca Lia Block like. But all it was was pure, untastefull and not even creative (or erotic) sex. Maybe people who are looking for that type of book, may like it....But I shur didn't. And trust me, because I didn't trust the other reviers, and I wasted my money. So I suggest that you buy another book of Francesca Lia Block, like "I Was A Teenage Fairy," or "Violet And Claire." Anything else.
Rating: Summary: Not the Usual... Review: ...Francescaish book, but good none-the-less. Francesca usually has essences of sexuality in her stories, but this is all of them combined. It's a poetic version of 'undressed'. She still amazes with her descriptions and the way she ties the characters together. I guess she's growing up and trying to phase out of her "young adult" category.
Rating: Summary: So Disappointed! Review: As a Young Adult Librarian, I enjoy the works Francesca Lia Block brings in the form of fiction... however, this is not a book worthy of place in anyone's collection. The vocabulary is vulgar, insulting, and the stories are not for the age group in which she intends. If I were a parent, and my Young Adult brought home this book, I would be shocked, angry, and demand why anyone would purchase such a collection of vividly sexual short stories, and make them available for anyone to read! As an adult, I found the stories appalling and merely written as, for lack of better terms, super-market smut. I am very disappointed with this book and would expect better from such a notable writer.
Rating: Summary: -_im only in this to enjoy_- Review: enter. become everything. and plum and mer and sylvie and all the gals of nymph do. they take their tools, their hurt, their sex, their fears and dive it all. they jump in with their everything- forgetting to look both ways, forgetting to check the brakes and the lights. and they take the SEX and they turn it into a healing platform. so the scabs and bruises can have fun for a day..to me it was just a REVOLUTION .seeing sex as a positive tool for healing. yay francesca. this girl goddess has lots of love for you and your work!
Rating: Summary: It's Francesca! Review: Francesca Lia Block's young adult novels (a definition I don't like, but... whatever) *do* have a strong erotic subtext. "Nymph" is like the Weetzie Bat books with much more sex. Should I add her style is always superb and her plots full of magic? Nah. If you're a fan, you should know it already. If you aren't, well, you don't know what you're missing...
Rating: Summary: dark and sexy Review: Francesca Lia Block, known for her writing in the young adult genre, has created Nymph, a lush collection of erotic short stories for adults. Using the same fairytale ideals as her previous novels and borrowing from Ovid's Metamorphoses, Block uses transformation, myth and magic to intertwine each tale. Block's prose evokes images bathed in purple and green, full and sensual. The actual sex portrayed in the work is effective enough, but the true sensuality exists in the way she tells the stories. Each tale relies on the belief that sex, desire and love have the power to alter a person's life. In some cases this transformation is a positive, life affirming experience. In Mer we encounter a mysterious mermaid with the power of the ocean behind her to invigorate a fading surfer. Milagro introduces us to Plum, who discovers that she is bestowed with the gift of helping lovers find their true loves. This revelation comes through an intimate encounter with her best friend Santiago, who realizes he likes boys afterwards. Plum returns again in Nymph. This time she sleeps with her friend Sylvie in order to free Sylvie from the string of punk rock losers she keeps bringing home. However, not all is rosy when it comes to desire. As we all know the power of sex has an evil side. Goddess brings us to a strip club in which the women literally are transformed into grotesque goddesses with wings and feline features for the pleasure of one man. We are told the spell may be broken through love, but soon learn love is not a panacea. Death also lingers in the background of some of the tales, fully rearing its head in Milk and again emerging in Plum.
Rating: Summary: A delightful surprise! Review: Francesca Lia Blocks new book is breathtaking! It is by far become one of my favorites! I can't put it down. This is the maturely and elegantly written book that deals with many sexual issues. The reader has a true feel of the situations and challenges of the characters. It's short and sweet and able to be read over and over!
Rating: Summary: What happened to Francesca? Review: Francesca Lia lock has been one of my favorite authors for years now: I count The Hanged Man, Dangerous Angels, and Girl Goddess #9 among my favorite book, but this is book fails to capture the magic that lurks inside her others. Block is not an erotica writer, and it shows: the sex scenes are out of place, redundant, too fluffy, and really not that erotic at all. Many of the characters are whiny and unlikeable, although I did find the character of Plum to be interesting. The stories are too short to really pull you into them, and when she tries to intertwine them, it comes across forced and sketchy. While Francesca Lia Block's work is without a doubt wonderfully unique and beautiful, this particular book isn't. Even her biggest fans would do fine in skipping it.
Rating: Summary: Luminescent Review: HELLO? this book was beautiful as usual, Francesca never disappoints. Her whole deal is transforming the written word into tangible healing faerie therapy and she has suceeded with flying shooting star dust once again. Her books are like small bibles, they heal the soul. All have one simple message: Love, accept, be openminded and see the world in a new light. Nymph is beautiful, it helps one further realize the healing powers of love and sex.
Rating: Summary: Very Dissapointed..... Review: I am a HUGE FLB fan, and now I am very dissapointed... I have read every single book of hers, and this one HAS to be the worst of hers. It lacks any type of story-telling. It consists of nine eroctic short stories, I enjoyed none. . I see that this book is placed in the young adult section in many libraries, and i am dissapointed b/c this is oviously a steamy steamy book. Although, ALL her other books are great!
