Rating: Summary: Highly Disapointed.... Review: I am a HUGE Francesca Lia Block fan, and am very dissapointed by her latest work "Nymph"... I have read every single book of hers, and this one HAS to be the worst of hers. Lacking any type of story telling, it consists of nine "eroctic" short stories, in which all were pointless and uncomfortable. This book is often misplaced in the young adult section in many libraries, and i am dissapointed because this is oviously a steamy book. This isn't like Francesca Lia Block's other works. Save yourself the money. If you want another book by this author then maybe you'd like Dangerous Angels, Echo, The Hanged Man, Violet & Claire, Rose and The Beast, and Girl Goddess #9...anything but this.
Rating: Summary: A fantasy gone awry Review: I am confused about how I want to describe this book. One part of me calls it soft core porn with more of a plot than usual. The other part of me wants to call it a magical fantasy that is ruined by the sex, silly character names (which usually work for Block's books), and the "chapters" feeling out of order. Block's use of sex is both pleasant and disturbing, but never degrading. That earns the book some extra credit.
Rating: Summary: Has wings...still falls flat Review: I am enchanted by the writing style of Ms Block, but I found the stories in this book to be a little heavy-handed. I don't know how the book could be improved. Her word choices seemed a bit jagged and didn't really mesh well with her beautiful writing, leaving the stories disjointed.

Rating: Summary: A BIG LET DOWN Review: I expected alot when I first heard about Francesca's book of erotica. I read the Kirkus review at Amazon before the book arrived at my doorstep. The plots seemed magical and sexy, and the cover of the book enchanting. Though I knew very little about the forthcoming book, I was very excited about getting it. However after reading the book, I was disappointed beyond belief. The first couple stories started out quite good but the sex described in the stories was like a script out of a cheap porno film, not erotica! And it seemed like Ms. Block couldn't decide whether or not she wanted interwoven stories or seperate stories. They were all mixed up and it was very annoying. She kept reversing back and forth in time. Mentioning characters from previous stories in another, than not at all. The book was not sexy or magical, it seemed like a rushed product. Something she needed to get out to her publisher by a set date and couldn't really finish up so just scrambled to get something in. These stories were embarrassing! They might be from a mediocre writer's secret fantasy journals but not Ms. Block! NO! Francesca is one of my favorite writers but this book was terrible. It also had many punctuation errors! For a published book, that should have been looked over better. I found myself reading the last story as fast as I could so it would be over with! I was anticipating a great collection of erotica (as in Anais Nin, not late night Cinemax soft core) and I was not satisfied. This book made me sad! It lacked the dark charm, magic, and lyrical euphoria of Ms. Block's previous works. I mean COME ON "Tears come, but so does Jacqui Fox"? UGH. SKIP THIS BOOK! Pick up anything else by the usually fantasic Ms.Block, this one is not worth the money.
Rating: Summary: the healing power of sex Review: I first read one of the stories in this little book, Mer, in another anthology. I loved it. I review erotica/porn professionally and it was the best story I'd read in ages.Something about her prose always touches me deeply, but her erotica - well, it brings tears to my eyes. I don't think it's vulgar, I agree with previous reviewers that the negatives are written by teenagers who were unsuspecting as to the nature of the book since she writes more often for a younger audience. For those who have lived and loved for awhile, check this one out, it is truly lovely.
Rating: Summary: Good...but not great. Review: I have always been excited by the works of Francesca Lia bLock. Anyone who has read one of her previous works knows how poetic and sensual they are. Thus, it is only natural that she would write a collection of erotic stories. As much as I enjoyed the book, I must say it was a disapointment in comparasion to many of her earlier works. Unlike many of her previous short stories, these are slightly underdeveloped. They are exciting and fanciful, but you never really feel for the characters. Unless you've your heart set on buying it, I'd recommend previewing a story or two.
Rating: Summary: sadly disappointing Review: i love francesca, i'm proud to be one of the many in her cult following, and i was so excited to read this book when i got it, despite the bad things i'd heard about it. i didn't believe it could be true, but this book is definitely lacking. first off, it's the same wonderful flowery francesca prose, but then she gets to the sex parts and it's almost like the vulgarity is forced. she doesnt even make an attempt to make the sex poetic. my advice is to get this only if you love francesca, just to read it because it's her. but otherwise, save your money to get one of her other books, like echo or weetzie bat.
Rating: Summary: Not Her Best Review: I thought that this book was good, but that it didn't hold a candle to her other books. She is a well astablished author and this was a knew field for her but I was highly disappionted.
Rating: Summary: In the opinion of someone who is not 13... Review: I've read other online reviews of this book and find that most of them are misguiding on behalf of the fact that they're written by teenagers, expecting teen angst, but who aren't even sophisticated enough to know what "erotica" means. Erotica = erotic fiction, ie: fiction consisting of graphic sex. Don't misjudge this book without reading it for yourself. Frankly, I think that this has been what FLB has been wanting to write for quite some time, but hadn't been able to for one reason or another. I have read every book by FLB sans Primavera, and find sex to be common ground for her. It's in the Weetzie Bat books, I was a Teenage Fairy, Violet & Claire, The Hanged Man, Ecstasia, Girl Goddess #9, The Rose and the Beast, Echo -- in all of these she shows sex to be a form of healing, and that's exactly what Nymph is about: healing through passionate love. If this concept evades your comprehension, I wouldn't recommend this book to you; otherwise, I think this is an exceptional book that deserves higher recognition and praise than Miss Block is receiving.
