Rating: Summary: BEST EVER Review: This book has everthing. Great plot. Try it and all his others.
Rating: Summary: One word: splendid Review: In what appears to be a third installment of a de facto "Mitch Rapp Trilogy", _Separation of Power_ begins seamlessly where _The Third Option_ left off. CIA Director Thomas Stansfield has died and Counter-terror head Irene Kennedy is the President's choice to take the reins of the agency. Standing in their way is the Machiavellian Senator Hank Clark... who, while appearing friendly to their cause, is secretly playing puppet-master, plotting his ouster of Kennedy against a backdrop of scandal and intrigue that will propel him into the White House. To make matter worse for Kennedy, the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad provides the President irrefutable proof that Saddam Hussein is only weeks away from completing his first three nuclear weapons. Taking the WMD's out will prove troublesome, however, as Hussein has positioned the bomb-making factory directly underneath a hospital. Meanwhile, aging CIA operator Mitch Rapp is attempting to build a life of normalcy with his girlfriend, Anna, and desperately wants a way out of the business. Can Kennedy and Rapp figure out a way to take out the weapons, salvage Kennedy's nomination as CIA director (and, in fact, Ryan's Presidency) and even build a sane life for Rapp and wife-to-be? One can only hope there are more installments of Flynn's fine work. Kennedy and Rapp are compelling, complementary characters that are among the finest ever created in this genre.
Rating: Summary: You'll wish Mitch Rapp was real! Review: Where was Mitch Rapp when we really needed him. He saved President Robert Hayes from terrorists in a prior novel, saves Mossad operative and ex-lover Donatella Rahn from assassins in this one and then takes time out to go after a nuke Saddam is hiding under a hospital in Baghdad. If that's not enough, he comes home to squeeze Mossad chief Ben Friedman who's working behind the scenes with some bad U.S. politicians. The only weak part of the story is news babe girlfriend Anna Reilly. She can hold up Air Force One because she's habitually late, dominate a press conference with inane questions of President Hayes who likes her, then throw a hissy fit when Mitch brings a wounded Donatella back to their hotel room in Milan after a hair-raising escape from the Mossad assassins. The political backdrop is that former CIA Director Stansfield is dead, his protege Irene Kennedy will be nominated to replace him and Republican Senator Clark promises Democratic President Hayes he will support her. Publicly Clark is all smiles, but behind the scenes he uses the demagogue Representative Albert Rudin to try and torpedo the nomination. There's a lot of great action and enough twists and turns to keep things interesting. It builds to an exciting and very satisfying ending. Vince Flynn's best!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Followup Review: I just finished this after reading Term Limits and The Third Option. If you liked those two, this continues the story of Mitch Rapp and friends. I found the ending somewhat unsatisfying, but otherwise a good read.
Rating: Summary: Big Disappointment Review: Flynn has fallen far from his first excellent efforts. I found the writing to be sophomoric at best and lacking in very basic research. Flynn has apparently never been to Italy (where I live) and doesn't know that coffee is not served "to go" as at a 7-11; He has apparently not traveled First Class either, or maybe doesn't understand that there is no higher fare a passenger can pay. Nonetheless, "Reilly was lucky the AA agent did not charge her extra on her first class seat due to the change of date (pg 268) And finally, why does he have President Hayes act perplexed (pg 285) that disclosure of classified material is actually something on which he can legally hang his enemies? Please
Rating: Summary: a bit disappointing Review: I loved his first 2 books, felt a little cheated with the end (or lack of) in his third book and while this was an enjoyable read, there were a couple things I found troubling: a lot of time spent rehashing old characters/relationships, heavy on the emotional descriptions, and the end, while supercharged, could have lasted longer. With 50 pages to go I wondered how he was going to resolve it all with the same degree of attention given to the early part of the book. It's almost like he tires of it and is ready to get on to the next book. On the plus side: great characters, fun story lines, relevant topics - they are page turners! I do look forward to his next book and like some other reviewers, can't wait for these characters to be in a movie.
Rating: Summary: Separation of Power Review: This is the third of Vince Flynn's novels and the suspense continues to build. If you haven't yet read any of his books, I think you would enjoy them most by starting with the first of the series - Term Limits, followed by Transfer of Power and then Separation of Power. His newest book The Third Option continues the great story line and leaves more to come. I am eagerly awaiting his next book as is my son and my friends to whom I've recommended Vince's books.
Rating: Summary: Bravo Review: In Vince Flynn's last novel a senator is trying to undermine the Director of the CIA and the President of the United States by exposing the CIA's covert operations. He believes that this will outrage the American public and that it will make it easier for him to run for President and to replace the CIA director with someone he can trust and manipulate. In the end he fails and cuts his losses to fight another day by having his co-conspirators killed. In SEPARATION OF POWER, three weeks have passed. Thomas Stansfield, the Director of the CIA, has died of cancer. His hand-picked successor is Dr. Irene Kennedy. Mitch Rapp, a covert-op, is still trying to find out who set him up in the last novel. He knows the identity of the assassin hired by the senator who killed Mitch's only link. The story gets into it when the assassin is slated for termination in order to silence her. The story takes a lot of twist and turns with its action and intensity. When things start going real bad, a rabbit is pulled out of the hat. I enjoyed this novel and was glad to see that the bad guy finally gets his comeuppance in a well-deserved manner. I am glad that Flynn spread this story line into two novels because it the story flows better instead of feeling cramped. Flynn's first two novels have some of the players involved in his latest work, but it is not essential to read in order to enjoy the novel. I strongly recommend one read THE THIRD OPTION before reading SEPARATION OF POWER. You might be disappointed the way the previous novel ends but this latest one really makes up for it. I am looking forward to Vince Flynn's next novel and I hope he creates a new story arc for his political thrillers.
