Rating: Summary: Excellent presentation of life in pre-history America. Review: The Gear's description of life in pre-historic America gives a vivid picture of every day life with a band of early Americans from spirituality and social customs to coping with climate and natural disasters. Their knowlege of archeology and anthropology lends a sense truth and realism that makes the story come alive.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely fantasic Review: The Gear's have a wonderful way of writing that brings this book to life just like all the others in the series. This one hits home that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. I highly recommend this one for your bookshelf.
Rating: Summary: Interesting!! Substitute?!! Way beyond that!!! Review: The reader gets caught up in the story!!
Rating: Summary: Sequel to People of the Wolf Review: This book was even poorer than the already mediocre People of the Wolf. I had decided to give the series another try, but I'm fairly sure I will not read the next ones. Fire's weakest point: it is almost the same story over again as People of the Wolf. The characters are poorly developed, which is a surprise, the themes are very modern, liberal political agendas, which is extremely out of place for the kind of book this is, and the ending is very anti-climactic and poorly timed. The Gear's make other jarring mistakes, like throwing modern anthroplogical terms into the characters dialogue, and in other ways acting like anthropologists first and story tellers second (or even third!) The premise of the book was interesting enough that I kept trudging through the text, expecting it to pick up and get better. Finally, only dogged determination not to quit kept me going until the end.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book! Review: This book was really wonderful. My favorite character was Tanager. She represents the woman as a whole very well. She is strong in times of crisis, but she also has a femanine side to her as well. I also liked Little Dancer. His emotions for his people are so real its almost frightening. This book was full of archeological facts and history. What a great book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: This is the type of book I was looking for. It was very well-written and there was not one page that didn't interest me. I was a little skeptical at first but the story quickly got very exciting. If you like the pre-history genre, this is a must-read.
