Rating: Summary: A modern, super-funny classic Review: This book is the "When Harry Met Sally" of books. It gets to the core of everything related to LOVE -- and keeps a sense of humor about the whole ordeal. You will recognize your own experience time and again throughout the book, and laugh every step of the way. The book tells the story of De Botton's relationship with one woman -- the beginning giddy phase, the settling in lovey dovey phase, and on through the other phases till the end. De Botton's witty writing makes everyone's favorite topic even more fun. This book is such a memorable read that I always recommend it to friends (or buy it for them) -- and all of them have loved it too.
Rating: Summary: This Guy has some true insight... Review: .... Although some parts do bog down a little bybeing overly dry and analytical, overall I've got to admit that in myexperiences with romance that I have gone through the same range of feelings and emotions. I don't know about other people, but I've never been able to really discuss these topics with other male friends to well( but sometimes with women) and I guess it's reassuring that maybe I'm not completely crazy when I meet a woman that I'm attracted to like iron filings to a magnet and yet turn into a shy, clumsy monosyllabic goof, or at least Mr. de Botten and I share the same neuroses. END
Rating: Summary: A genius of a book Review: If you've ever been in love, this is the book for you. It's the finest analysis of love I think I've ever read. It's deep but reads extremely simply and easily. Anyone who enjoys this should also take a look at the author's other book, How Proust can change your Life. both of them are minor masterpieces.
Rating: Summary: Still my FAVORITE book ever, 4 years after I first read it Review: Excellent, humorous, entertaining, witty, sophisticated! I cannot say enough wonderful things about this book. I have recommended it to all my friends. Anyone who reads this book is sure to enjoy it! I also highly recommend "The Romantic Movement" and "Kiss & Tell."
Rating: Summary: Brilliant! Review: A friend of mine suggested me this book when I told her that I had problems with my relationship and I followed her advice. This is a really good book and you will never understand how you got to the last page. You have probably been in the situations described in this book. If you are one of those who like to underline the passages/lines they liked, get yourself a new pen! Don't hesitate to buy this book.
Rating: Summary: An absolute must-read of a book!! Review: This is, hands down, the most fantastic book about the bliss and the pit falls of romantic love. Elegantly written, sparse, self-conscious, full of humor and genuine feeling for all the menacing particularites of being in that awkward state known as "in love". I read it from beginning to end in one afternoon without a break for food, drink or the bathroom! Don't miss out on this experience. Buy it today and relish it forever.
Rating: Summary: A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining read Review: Brilliantly written, witty and sensitive. I cannot believe a male wrote this (sorry to the few sensitive, literate guys out there).....Alain, are you by any chance single???
Rating: Summary: Like Joe Strummer said: Love Kills, Yeah Love Kiiiiiilllzzz Review: de Botton's first effort is an intimate and exacting dissection of a love affair, disguised as a novel. The flow is chronological, with short chapters further divided into short numbered paragraphs, each expressing a single thought. Liberally sprinkled with quotes and references to various philosophers, it teeters at times on becoming pretentiously highbrow, but always eases up and delights with home truths about the ebb and flow of relationships. If you've ever been in love, you will recognize yourself in parts of this book. Very ambitious and interesting.
Rating: Summary: forget the self-help books... Review: Who needs to know "Why Women Think the Way they Do" or "What Every Woman should know about Men." De Botton has captured so many of what are probably universal feelings and thoughts on love. Painful, yet funny, because so much of it's true!
Rating: Summary: A great read for the single girl Review: If you've ever wondered, as I did, what it would be like to have a relationship with a man who was intelligent, insightful, well-read, honest, open, emotionally available, even vulnerable, had a wit that made you laugh out loud AND was madly in love with you, adored you and everything about you, check this out. Alain de Botton is brilliant.
