Rating: Summary: Immature Review: First love usually has it's pitfalls. All love stories end. None more drastic than first love. Love is something you practice. It is work, not just pleasure. My summory is that it is a well-written, literary enjoyable book but the narrator lacks the insight to accept the "otherness" of the lover - see DH Lawrence's observations on togetherness and separateness. It is possible, no, necessary to be able to love someone whose taste in shoes you don't agree with. Witholding your disapproval of someone's behaviour when it doesn't hurt or affect anyone - is love. Please write another book on the same kind of experience in 20 years time - you'll see what I mean!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Review: Funny, witty, clever. An economist's approach to love. A great book and a good, quck read. If you don't like this book, you've never been in love.
Rating: Summary: superannoying Review: A disappointing, pretentious effort. The characters are unoriginal and the plot predictable. A few months after buying this book I actually threw it away because I couldn't bear to have it in the house a moment longer.
Rating: Summary: In 20 years it'll be revered as a classic Review: An approach to love, in a post-Modern way, with echoes of Barthes and Eco. Highly witty and a bit cynical; sometimes the erudit references may bore the reader who might be looking for a new, yet romantic view of love. The neo-Barroque style is surely imposing itself as a late XX-century feature in the literary fields.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: Witty, clever. Intelligent allusions to philosophers and literature. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: the many levels of Alain de botton's "love" Review: The truth is thats there is nothing really simple about anything. Especalily love, Alain de Botton "On-love" puts the carnel affairs of the heart through the mircosciope and studies it with the eyes of a sceintist. And discovers many things. First the general a promblem pleged romanace bewteen two young London professials thats ends badly and runs out steam after a year. Second that a pattern of behavior emerges that is detailed and very true for most people face the same problems face with romance. thridly is the sublime joy thats comes when we find romantic joy and the unbelivable pain when it ends. If i have any problem with "on-love". I cared so much so about his adventures with Chloe that I grew tired of his observarions. No matter how brilliant they were. Im purely guessing here but i think mr de botton wrote this book when racking his brain trying to find out how the perfect romance had gone wrong. And came to the conclusion it wasnt! very perfect after all.
Rating: Summary: If you are ever feeling obsessed with love, you must read. Review: Every ambigious thought you have ever had on love, put into a funny-ish story. My copy is underlined throughout, and my response to any friend who whines about her love life is "have I made you read 'On Love'?". I cannot imagine the person who couldn't relate to this book.
Rating: Summary: adb is a smart man. Review: sometimes i take breaks from adb's books because i want them to last as long as possible. this is an author i would love to have conversation with.
Rating: Summary: It was so boring I only read half of it. Review: After reading the reviews here, I decided to buy the book. Frankly, I had to struggle to get to the half-way point before I gave up on it. Who are these people who gave it such raved reviews? Are they friends of the author's or the publisher's? It was as if I was reading a different book! What "original style"? What "engrossing"? What "delightful"? I will be very suspicious of these reviews from now on.
