Rating: Summary: Hot recipes, hot sex, hot weather--Red hot read. Review: You know how it is in the South. Hot. The food is hot, the weather is hot, and the sex is hot. Okay, so it is 1952. How hot can it be? Well, the temperature jumps to the top of the thermometer, Louisiana's food is known to bite you back. And the sex? Is there such a thing as cold sex? Not even with the undertaker. As in small towns everywhere the pickin's are few, but frequent. At least this might be the explanation for the who is doin' what with whose spouse nature of the story. Or an explanation for the general nature of the species. This is a wonderful book. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: A must read, pass along to your best-friend book! Review: I must say that this has to be one of the best books that I have read in a long time. It was a great story, with incredible character development. Michael Lee West's authorship made you feel like you really knew these people. It was wonderful taking a journey into the Deep South... I didn't want to leave. If you are going to read any book this Fall, please read this one...you won't regret it. A word of warning to the dieter's though: this book will make you extremely hungry!
Rating: Summary: Like A Beautiful Louisiana Sunset Review: Like a cool drink of lemonade, this book quenched my thirst. It's funny and naughty, sad and touching. I felt like I could find my way around Limoges, Louisiana in the dark. This book touched my soul.
Rating: Summary: What a Fantastic Book! Review: This book was funny but also touching. This is a story of two women who fly away from abusive husbands. It's just got so much to recommend it. If you like reading about adultry, it's got that. If you like reading about goofy sex it's got that too. (I will NEVER as long as I live forget the chapter called Red Beans and Rice. The price of the book is worth it for that scene alone. And also for the chapter called The Long Egg. I have never laughed so hard. If you like Mother-Daughter stories, it's got that also. I loved the way the recipes were woven into the book. It reminded me of LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE and also HEARTBURN. Ms. West is a treasure!
Rating: Summary: Strange,Enticing,Very Different!!! Review: This book left me laughing, crying and shaking my head. The author's style is very effective. I felt as though I was listening to gossip instead of reading a novel. Quite a treat. I loved Sophie!
Rating: Summary: ENCHANTING!!! Review: I've never enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed this one. It's a frighteningly true portrait of a small Louisiana village, laced with intriguing characters, and an entertaining plot that will keep you tied to your seat.
Rating: Summary: surprising and pleasing Review: It took me a good three chapters to get into this book, but I was soon hooked. I enjoyed following the lives of three significantly different women and seeing how their lives change and grow -- all mirrored by the problems in Olive's short precious life. The writing is fantastic and so are the recipes! This book is an enjoyable read!
Rating: Summary: A Good Book for Discussion Groups Review: I am a southern woman who now lives in the Pacific Northwest, and reading this book was like a visit back to my hometown (Hattiesburg, Mississippi). I fell in love with this book and I want to recommend it to anyone who enjoys gorgeous, entertaining fiction. It is very much a companion book to Rebecca Wells' fabulous novel, DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD, and also to the works of Ellen Gilchrist (THE AGE OF MIRACLES, LIGHT CAN BE BOTH WAVE AND PARTICLE, etc). The writing of these authors is different and the plots and characters are unique; however they are mind altering if read back-to-back. These authors write books that are both delicious and different, yet of a similar genre.
All of these novels are set in the Deep South, have a bevy of outrageous, hilarious heroines, lush, vivid settings, and humor that will make you laugh outloud.
Rating: Summary: The Recipes alone make this book worth the investment!!! Review: This book was definitely worth the investment. It covered many relevant topics. However, a more appropriate subtitle would be "A Novel concerning Life, Death, Sex, "Religon" and recipes. The story starts off slowly, which is probably best, because, it takes a while to get all the characters straight. and the ending is suprising, but not unexpected. I also have tried a recipe from this book and it was delicious.
Rating: Summary: OPRAH, LOOK AT THIS ONE! Review: A friend gave me this book shortly after my mom died, and it just changed my whole perspective on "life, death, sex, and recipes". It's sweet and sad and so true to life! This book has everything a reader could want. Starting things off, you've got a teenaged Baptist who swallows a bottle of rose poison, and the teenager's daddy is spooning the counter girl at his pharmacy (right under his wife's nose). I laughed till tears streamed down my face when I read the Cordy King chapter, when she showed off her miniature clothes for, um, certain male body parts. I'll never eat red beans and rice and not think of her again
