Rating: Summary: Weightless, simply ridiculous and flimsy plot Review: It is with great pleasure that I review Pandora's Clock. It was not with great pleasure that I read Pandora's Clock. After a few pages, the reader is bombarded by Nance's inescapably terrible prose and plot development. Our protagonists run a gerbil wheel of airplanes, killer viruses, and missiles. Our plot degenerates from a possibly readable virus tale into Middle East terrorism. Our sideshow's tale, which takes up more than a quarter of the book, quickly ends with nothing to add to the eventual conclusion. The reader is subjected to a flimsy plot, terrible characters, and an all-too-unappealing overall feel. A disgrace and a waste of trees.
Rating: Summary: AUTHORITATIVE READING OF A SKY HIGH THRILLER Review: John Nance, popular author of Turbulence, Headwind, and Blackout, gives an authoritative reading of his latest sky high thriller. The days before Christmas are often filled with happy anticipation. Such is the case with the passengers aboard Captain James Holland's flight from Frankfurt to New York; they're all anxious to be home for the holidays. Suddenly, a passenger keels over, apparently from a heart attack. Holland is, of course, forced to ask for clearance to make an emergency landing at London's Heathrow Airport. He is shocked when permission to land is denied by air traffic control with the word that the passenger is not a heart attack victim but has contracted a deadly virus, and the plane must return to Germany. But German officials refuse permission to land, as do other European fields. Fear spreads that all aboard may now be carriers of the virus, and then the unthinkable - will the plane be shot down? Another pulse pounder from Nance! - Gail Cooke
Rating: Summary: Go ahead...take THIS flight!! Review: Like many others who have reviewed this book, this was my 1st read by Mr. Nance, and I have to admit, it held me captive from beginning to end. I like nothing more than to be totally captured by a story and think of nothing but finding out what is going to happen next...if a book can get me to be THAT absorbed by its tale, then by default I give it at LEAST 4 stars. Pandora's Clock deserved 4 stars, but I reserve my 5th star for something truly special (to me at least) and while Nance may not have achieved that 'something special' for me, it was still an action-packed story that really did have me entertained all the way through. As I read, I kept wondering HOW Nance was going to keep this plane aloft for hundreds of pages while still maintaining an entertaining story, and without giving away anything too important, not all of the story takes place in the air--or even on the plane for that matter. Just TRUST me, if you are a fan of action/adventure stories, this is definitely one of the 'must reads' if you ask me. Oh, and by the way, his follow-up book was even better. All in all, Nance is a writer with a VERY promising future...IF he can keep writing books this good-- I for one certainly HOPE he does.
Rating: Summary: Fast paced edge of your seat action... Review: Nance keeps the pace brisk as you bounce between a plane believed to be carrying a virus capable of destroying life on earth, various world governments, airports, airlines, the CIA, terrorists, etc. I had a hard time putting this one down. A great read...
Rating: Summary: Gripping page-turner, but mixed message Review: Nance quite obviously knows his subject, and his narrative has the ring of authenticity when it comes to aviation. He also keeps the reader captivated with non-stop action and plot twists. Be ready for some frustration with the message, though. It seems that extreme arrogance has its rewards, and many of Nance's heroes are not so idealistic that they forget to keep a large jar of vaseline handy in case it's needed to keep their jobs.
Rating: Summary: Mind candy; probably best not read while flying :-) Review: Pandora's Clock is great mind candy. The story is interesting and you can feel Captain Holland's frustration at not knowing what's going on and ultimately taking justic into his own hands, so to speak. He's the kind of resourceful person you want in the cockpit "just in case." I especially enjoyed this book because it put my commercial checkride into perspective: I wasn't transporting any dead bodies, air traffic control wasn't denying me landing clearance, and no one was shooting at me.
Rating: Summary: WHAT A BOOK! Review: Pandora's Clock is the best book ever written. It is so well written. Nance uses a very descriptive style of writing. You can not compare to his style. He writes so clear and well. I saw the movie on TV to it was great. Nance deserves a newberry award for this book. It is so good. I just cant stop raving about it. I am reading it for the second time. The setting for the story is so good. All these people trapped up in an airplane carrying the doomsday virus. What else could you ask for. I mean there is even a little rommance. Pandora's CLock is a great book.
Rating: Summary: Starts with a bang...ends with a fizzle... Review: Pandora's Clock starts on firm footing with an intriquing premise, the possibility of a "doomsday virus" being carried on a commercial airline flight. The first hundred pages of this book move along crisply, slowing building tension...but the introduction of some government type characters and the eventual shift of focus away from the crew and passengers of the airliner, and towards a CIA conspiracy ruins the book. The finale is a poorly thought out and very contrived turn of events that leaves you very disappointed. It's not a bad read if you let the first half of the book carry you through to the end, but nowhere near the quality of The Hot Zone or The Andromeda Strain.
