Summary: Surprisingly Good!
Review: At first I didn't expect much from this book. I read the overview and I wasn't impressed but since someone loaned to me, why not. This is a story about incest, misdirected anger, and accountibility. It's also a story also how the family bond can overcome past hurts. It's not predictable at all. It has a couple of twists towards the end of the story. Read it and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Summary: Misunderstanding
Review: I felt this was a good book but not good enough. I fought to finish this book "never start a book without finishing it." I book didn't hold enough drama and things i can relate. When the end came I was neither happy, satisfied, or sad. I WAS CONFUSED! I don't know if i was confused because of my age [15, i'll be 16 in month] but i just didn't understand why the book had ended. I felt the book wasn't done telling it's story, like it didn't get it's point across. Is there a part 2 to this book?

Summary: This one is a head-scratcher
Review: I finished this book in one sitting, not because I was enthralled but because I was anxious to see when it would all come together. But I finished sorely disappointed because I do not feel that it ever really did. I just couldnt figure out the main characters of Faith, Hope, and Miss Irene at all.

Incest and choosing men over one's own children seems it would cause a vast and bitter rift between mother and daughters, but not so here. While they got into heated arguments every ten pages or so about what happened in the past, they still always ended up acting like nothing that catastophic had ever happened to them as they joked, hugged, and laughed. I dont know about anyone else, but if I was molested and my mother chose the man over me and called me a slut, and as a result I ended up a free-loading prostitute on crack, I'd have some definite issues with our relationship. And it is true that even when experiencing something like that, the victim will still love the parent, but it seems that years later they would have atleast had some long, deep talks and Irene would have apologized for putting men before her children. But that never really happened.

Instead there were just pages and pages of the women playing "who would you choose",chunks of absolutely insignificant and uniteresting dialogue(such as the way too long conversation about the word 'gesundheit'), filler about Faith's job including way too much unnecessary delving into the lives of her clients, and a WHOLE lot on Henry and Faith meeting, Henry's prior involvement with the Five Percenters, and the "Godfather" restaurant incident, which was actually clever in its own right, but was still totally random in addition to everything else if the story wasnt meant to be about Henry and Faith. Not to mention the subplot of the lesbian wedding, of which the ending was not a surprise at all. I thought it very obvious what was really going to happen, and it really seemed as if she could have worked that part into the novel a little better. Sure, she made it all come together at the end, but it was at the expense of not tying the strings together on the issues between mother and daughters.

The supposed big climax at the end just left me scratching my head as nothing about the past was delved into deeply or rationally, no apology or understanding from the mother, and no insight as to how the healing process began. You simply turned the page to the beginning of the last chapter and all of a sudden it was six months later and all was well and everyone was happy and best friends again. HUH?!?!Maybe it was just me, but I simply couldnt figure out what exactly was supposed to be the main plot of this novel. And perhaps that lies more on the editor who should have done a better job in plugging up the craters(not holes) in the story.

I think it did have the potential to be a good story, however. And since I do like supporting African American authors, I will definitely give Ms.Miller another try. Hopefully her next work will contain a more definitive central plot and much better editing to avoid the filler.

Summary: You'll be moved
Review: I had been waiting for this book because of an excerpt i read on Karen Miller's website, and when it arrived at my bookstore i snatched it up quick. I was not disappointed. It was one of those books that you don't want to put down. I read it in just two days.

I'm Telling is about a family that was victimized by incest, and what happened to them because of it. I hated the mother at first, but then wound up feeling sorry for her even though she didn't do anything to help her daughter. Some people will do anything to have a man in their lives. Sad but true.

But I loved Faith, and I was really touched by the love she had for her family, and how bad she wanted to see them heal. And her boyfriend was off the hook.

I would definitely recommend this book.

Summary: This book was REAL!
Review: I just recently finished this book. In fact, it only took me about four days to read it. I think that the author really caputured the emotion of the characters. She really made the characters memorable. In fact, I still find myself thinking about Hope, and Faith. This story is very real. To think, I could work or just happen to know someone who has been through something similar to this is really something. I honestly don't think there was anything the author could improve in that story. I am about to read Using what you Got. I only hope that this one is as good as the last! All I have to say is Ms. Miller you go girl!!!

Summary: I'm Telling you to read this book!
Review: This book was about a set of twins named Faith and Hope. As children, Faith witnessed her sister Hope being sexually molested by their mother's boyfriend. She let it go on for a while without telling her mother and when she did finally tell her, it ruined everything and caused a fight. When they were older, Faith grew up to be a literary agent and Hope was a prostitute and a crack head. Hope and her mother were constantly fighting because she was still having sex with her boyfriends.
My favorite character was Faith. I liked her because she was a strong, smart, and beautiful young woman and she had her life together. She didn't take any mess from anybody and when her mother and sister fought, she refused to get in the middle of it. She had money, her own place, and a steady boyfriend. She and Hope were two totally different people. She was there to comfort her mother and her sister when they needed her. I would definitely say that she was the strongest character in the book. She helped her sister get a job and she got her into a drug program.
I liked this book because it's very detailed. When I picked it up I couldn't put it down. It was very intense but at the same time it had a little comedy. I also liked it because it sort of teaches a lesson about love, family, loyalty and honesty. Although there's a lot of backstabbing, you can tell that the characters still a lot of good feelings and love toward each other. I would recommend this book to anyone who has gone through hardships and rough childhood.

Summary: Good Read
Review: This was a enlightening and sometimes painful read. I find that the predicaments illustrated in this book are unfortunate but are quite prevalent in our society. I think Ms. Miller did a good job of making us aware of this problem. This is a good read.

Summary: I enjoyed this book
Review: This was a simple enjoyable fun read. It was about a dysfunctional family. Although after growing up I have learned most families are dysfunctional. There is not any such thing as a perfect family. Every family has different dynamics that you or I might not understand but to them it is normal. In this story you have twin sisters one who is fairly accomplished in life where the other one is a screw up. The "bad" does some terrible things to her sister her twin no less that I wouldn't do to an enemy. The mother of the twins well she is a whole different story altogether. I found her weird and eccentric at times. And at one point in this book I didn't like her at all for not protecting her children which led them to do unsafe things. This was a very simple easy fastpaced read.
