Rating: Summary: Westchester Gossip Lit Review: Even if you don't live in Westchester, NY, if you enjoy the chic-lit and gossip lit genre, this book is definitely for you! This book successdully illustrates a hilarious side of some of the affluent suburban lifestyles that could be found across the country. This book allowed me to escape real life and experience a glamourous lifestyle I would never have in real life. I hope there's another.
Rating: Summary: Satirical Review: I am a "Diaries" junkie and have read them all. I loved The Nanny Diaries and The Botox Diaries, and other similar type books like The Good Nanny. (Who knew Nannies would provide such fodder?) From what I've seen on the reviews of all those books, a lot of people agree that those kinds of books are a fun read...but if you don't like this genre you would probably be disappointed. While each is different, I think that what those books have in common with The Bronxville Book Club is that they all are satirical looks at some of the lovable, hateable (?), bizarre, unusual characters and situations we meet in these times. There were characters in this book I could definitely relate to (like Sarah), would like to be friends with (like Francesca) and others I `m not sure I want to be in a real book club with! Frankly, Lizbet was the character I loved to hate. If you like this kind of novel, I'd recommend The Bronxville Book Club.
Rating: Summary: SUPERFICIAL AT BEST Review: I can't believe this is the same book that other reviewers on this website are raving about. Perhaps they are friends of the author? I picked up this book because of the reference to "I Don't Know How She Does It" - what a mistake. I had to get through too many chapters describing one-dimensional characters (none of whom a reader would want to know, with the exception of Francesca) before I got to the actual book club meeting. Not much of a meeting! It was over before it even started.
I was bored to tears with this book. If you're a fan of good literature, don't bother picking it up.
Rating: Summary: clear the cobwebs Review: I love to read all kinds of books (even 800 page "real life" "nonfiction" by ex-Presidents!) It's refreshing after reading several intense books to pick up something like The Botox Diaries or The Bronxville Book Club. The tales of these moneyed suburban minds are a far-fetched world many of us would like to visit - as long as we can get back! Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable read Review: I read The Bronxville Book Club and The Silent Auction and am now eagerly awaiting the next tales of these loveable characters. I especially enjoy how the author wove humorous and relevant quotes in with each chapter. I also thought how much like my book club this was - even though we all love to read, our meetings aren't always about the book! Can't wait for the next installment...
Rating: Summary: reader from bronxville Review: I so enjoyed this book and didn't want it to end. The epigraphs at the beginning of each chapter are hysterical. It's fiction, but I even found a few of my own behaviors in some of the characters and still could laugh. I think this could be a snapshot of any affluent town in the US. We all need to lighten up and not take ourselves too seriously! I hope there's a sequel.
Rating: Summary: PEERING IN ON ANOTHER WORLD Review: I was so impressed with this book. The writing is top notch and the author creates such vivid pictures of her characters and their lives. We are given such trememdous insight into the lives of the rich (but not famous) group that live in a small town not that far from where I live. I found myself wondering if these people who are so well off are any happier than the rest of us working class folk. Wouldn't we all like to try things in their shoes and then see how we'd fare with all that wealth. The book keeps your interest in them and the small community in which they live. I definitely recommend this as a "must read" to all...
Rating: Summary: A weak attempt at satire, I think Review: Like a previous reviewer, I can't believe that we all read the same book. It was a lightweight attempt at satire, at best. But mostly it was flimsy name and brand dropping set against the backdrop of one-dimensional caricatures of "high society" women. You didn't find yourself caring about them or really caring what happened, which, in the end is okay because nothing does. Not to mention, while we were looking for a quick summer read for our book club, this was ridiculous as every chapter ends with at least two pages of white space before the next one begins. Skip it and, if you want a book about a book club, read Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons, or if you want a satirical commentary on high society, pick one of any of the more well known titles out there.
Rating: Summary: Great book club selection Review: My book club was looking for a fun read after the holidays and this was our choice. It was perfect - it made us laugh and reminded us not to take ourselves too seriously. Personally I thought the characters were well defined and interesting and felt I got to know them. I wasn't looking for a saga that spanned decades, or a weighty tome by Tolstoy. The book was a slice of life in a very affluent suburb with some great characters. For me,the sign of a good book is when I don't want it to end - and that's what happened with The Bronxville Book Club. I enjoyed it very much and am looking forward to a sequel about these conspicuous ladies of consumption!
Rating: Summary: Recommended for fans of this genre Review: Thank goodness amazon has about 2 million books, because I don't think any 2 readers see a book the same way. I took The Bronxville Book Club on vacation and was glad I did. It was both fun and funny. I've read other books about book clubs, including one mentioned by another reviewer - Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons (which I did not enjoy since I really couldn't get into the lives of those Bon Bons!) Maybe it's an East Coast thing, but I definitely found it much more enjoyable to spend one fictional day with the characters in The Bronxville Book Club.
Each chapter began with an appropriate quote -I've already posted some of them on my PC. They still make me laugh, which is just what I was looking for.
