Rating: Summary: A rip roaring page turner!!! Review: If you are in the mood for an extreme action packed book, then this one is definitely for you. The main character Schofield goes through so many arduous tasks that just when you think nothing else can happen you are thrown into another obstacle. The imagination involved in creating these very vivid events is quite fun. If you want true accuracy in your books, then you may want to pass but for an amazing adventure pick this one up and you won't be able to sleep until you turned the last page.
Rating: Summary: What a waste of paper Review: I Live in Norway and was sent this book especially from my family in Australia on the premise that it was a best seller and therefore good. How wrong they were. This book is a joke and an insult to the intelligence of anyone that has had any level of proper education past grade 4. As someone that has read a large number of military fiction I can say from experience that while the best books are somewhat unrealistic they are nevertheless well researched and based on fact. Tom Clancy for instance often writes about incredible situations however his excellent knowledge of the military and his extensive research give him credibility. Reilly however seems to think this as completely unecessary. Artistic license is one thing but it requires an essence of realism particularly when writing a military novel. If some authors stretch artistic license then Reilly breaks it apart. His situations are so ridiculous and unrealistic that only the most numb skulled dreamer could actually appreciate them. I mean I could accept the concept of man eating killer whales and could even accept the french using crossbows (yep still don't know where he came up with that one) but after this is just completely loses the plot. I could rant more but I feel that people will get the message. True this book is fiction but Reilly goes way way beyond that. This book is fantasy land stuff. Not even George Lucas would get Luke Skywalker to do the things Scarecrow manages to do. I guess it's just a matter of time before Reilly gets Scarecrow beating up on Darth Vader as well. Why not, with Reilly it appears that anything is possible.
Rating: Summary: X-files on speed Review: I think this has to be the most action-packed book I've ever read. I'm frankly surprised that Mr. Reilly actually had enough room for a story in there along with all of the breakneck battle scenes. The action starts on page three and never slows down. From reading the synopsis on the dust jacket, I thought this was going to be a rip-off of John Carpenter's The Thing. Not even close. It's more like Die Hard crossed with the X-files. Secret Government organizations, futuristic military weapons and gadgets, sea monsters, elite special forces groups battling it out in an underground base to learn the secret of a 100 million year old spaceship! Great fun. I'm giving this book a 3 mainly because of the unrealistic portrayal of wildlife behavior in the book. The characterization of orca's as manhunting meat grinders from the deep only detracts from the story. Like most animals, killer whales only eat when they're hungry. The whales in this book must have been REALLY hungry. There were other small factual errors that I noted and some over-the-top action sequences but, overall, they weren't enough to distract from the story too much. This is a good book. Not great literature by any means, but sometimes you just feel like a little mindless action. Ice Station has action coming out the wazoo. Definitely worth your time if you're a fan of the action/adventure genre.
Rating: Summary: a non putdownable book!! Review: Im not a novel reader, but when was advised to read ice station, i couldnt put it down. I was extremely impressed with the story, the maps at the front of the novel and the military information, although the killer whales attacking humans made it seem less real but everything else was fantastic. Matt Reilly made the marines into lovable characters such as Scarecrow and Mother and wasnt afraid to kill some off or badly injure them in some way. Once you read ice station you'll be hooked and i advise to read his other books like area 7
Rating: Summary: Action or plausability?? Review: I have rated this book as a middling 3, because it really depends on what type of book you are looking for. If you want action, death-defying scenarios, and a victory for the good guys, BUT most importantly are prepared to sacrifice some elements of reality and plausability in the process, then this book is for you. However, those looking for a 100% accurate and realistic account of military events will be disappointed. Whether or not you liked the book, (and I myself loved it), you cannot overlook some of the blatant 'research' errors contained within the book, nor can you accept the fact that Shane Schofield has not died by the end of the book, or even after the first few battles. It is a terrific book in terms of packing a punch, but the realism that is usually required for books of this genre is lacking, much like his other works. However, especially if you are a male teenager, there is still a lot of enjoyment to be had out of reading this book.
Rating: Summary: IF ITS ACTION ADVENTURE YOU WANT, LOOK NO FURTHER Review: Okay, lets get right to the punchline. This is not Crime & Punishment; it is, however, an excellent read for the genre. Lightening (as Reilly's writing style is often descibed) quick dialogue keeps the action and the story moving as fast as the reader can go. This was my first Reilly book (currently reading Area 7) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Wonderfully current with the hardware (weapons) which are used throughout the story. If you are looking for an action adventure story with a great hero, look no further, this is your book.
Rating: Summary: wowowow Review: This book reads like a action movie if u can accept the stunts. (Like in movies the chance stuff like this would really work are close to zero) But this is pure entertainment! and thats why I read anyway. Futhermore the story twists are for the most part out of the blue, some might see a few comming, while most probebly see the hints when the read the book for the 2nd time. Impossible to lay down was a comment on the back of the cover and it was true, read the 2nd half during a night.
Rating: Summary: Great a must read for action fans Review: to everyone that hated this book while u were reading this book did u have ur finger up ur ass because this book is great. sure somethings may be absurd but it is a book not reality. this book has alot of action and it keeps you wanting to read on. matthew reilly is a great author and i recomend AREA 7 and SCARECROW i have read both and they are great.
Rating: Summary: Sorry excuse for a technology based action book. Review: If you have more than an "eighth grade" education, avoid this book. It races from implausibility to co-incidence via impossibility at a breakneck speed, but not fast enough to avoid any remotely educated reader realising that this writer just hasn't a clue about the technical side of his story or science in general. Examples include (spoiler warning) an imploding diving bell, for (insert your personal god's name here) sake, and a hovercraft with brakes that can stop it dead in seconds. He also has a strange idea of how solar flares and the ionosphere works. It's hard to believe his editor and proofreader were just as poorly educated and let this turkey through. It's in the same league as Star Trek episodes in which everything is resolved by some technobabble solution that the listener is supposed to just accept... (We'll just shoot some Obscurion particles at them thru the deflector array, captain!). That's just playtime science fantasy. Unfortunately Reilly chooses to play fast and loose with *real* physics. You can see it coming (it's that predictable at that level - he telegraphs his plot punches) and it's like watching a slow motion train wreck despite the plot speed. It's pretty obvious that Reilly writes for one audience only. Those who want souped-up action and are willing to suspend any belief whatsoever. My 14 year old nephew loved it. Didn't spot a single technical foul-up and praised the action. That must be his target. As for me, never again. I feel soiled.
Rating: Summary: One of the worst books I have ever read Review: This book is unreadable for a number of reasons: -amateurish style. I cringed at least once per page at his awkward phrases and childish descriptions; -ludicrous action. One fight scene goes for roughly 100 pages, getting more and more unbelievable as time s-l-o-w-l-y ticks by; -cardboard characters. How many cliches can Reilly fit into one book?; -ridiculously unbelievable situations. One or two might be okay, but almost *everything* that happens will insult your intelligence. Overall, this thing makes me wonder if it ever saw an editor. Certainly not a competent one. I heard that Reilly paid to have his first book published himself. I can see why.
