Rating: Summary: She's still the best Review: Although I felt this book was a little slow in getting off the ground, it might be due to the fact that this was the first Peters book I had read, and it took me some time to adjust to her form of writing. In the end, I have to say, "Bravo" to Ms. Peters, for she is a giantess among women mystery writers, and her style equals that of Agatha Christie. Amelia Peabody is undaunted, unfazed, and gutsy- exactly the kind of woman all girls want to be.
Rating: Summary: Amelia's at it again! Review: Another in the series of Amelia Peabody Emerson mysteries--always great fun, with just enough drama and historical background to keep things interesting. And, Amelia is always a hoot!
Rating: Summary: The Snake, the Crocodile, and the REALLY good book. Review: At first I could barely keep my eyes open as I read. I put off reading it for days and days! I figured that since Rameses wasn't in it a lot it couldn't be very exciting. How wrong I was! Nefret pursuades AMelia and Emerson to go to egypt without her and rameses this year, so that both children can work on their studies. hoping for a second honeymoon, Amelia agrees. however, the old egyptian story the Snake, the crocodile and the Dog comes into play when Emerson is taken captive, and is beaten on the head, thus causing him to lose his memory of his wife and child. Amelia goes along with his Amnesia, seeing if she could woo him back. but a deadly plot is underfoot, with the master criminal closer then could be excpected, and an old rival suddenly in the forefront again. I was driven mad by thinking that Emerson did not remember Amelia at all, as well as the plot, which culminates to a spectacular finish when all is thought to have calmed down. An amazing book, I enjoyed it enormously.
Rating: Summary: best book in the series!!!!!!! Review: Elizabeth peters is an amazing writer I have loved all of her Amelia Peabody mysteries. I look forward to more. This is for sure the best book in the entire series. The great "re-love" story and the surprising ending is fantastic. I would sugest that you read the other books in her series. So as to get the full effect of this book. I would encurage everyone who is into Egypt and Mysteries to read this series. sincerely, a very devoted reader
Rating: Summary: romance revived in middle age Review: I got into this series with the "internal quartet" beginning with Seeing a Large Cat, and it's always been the family dynamics, much more than the actual mysteries, that I care about. After I finished off those four (because I was desperate to make sure it all ended well), I went back to the beginning and am now reading the others in order. The first few were entertaining enough, but in this installment I really felt the emotional dynamics that had gotten me hooked. Amelia's inner strength and devotion to her husband are put to the test in deeper ways than ever before (when it was merely their lives that were in danger). And Ramses is even funnier in his letters from England than he is in person. My only complaint is that this is the only book so far where I actually guessed who the villain was. And, while nobody's claiming these books are realistic, this particular twist was beyond implausible. Still, this was the first time since I finished off He Shall Thunder in the Sky that I wanted to start the next book immediately after turning the last page.
Rating: Summary: Good Gad this book is the best Review: I have all the amelia peabody emerson books this one has to be my favorite the thing testing amelia's and emerson's marriage was brilent.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: I have enjoyed all of the Amelia Peabody stories, but this is the first one that made me think I would want to read it again. Emerson has lost his memory, and it was fun to watch him get to know Amelia again. Then, there was a twist at the end that made me go "what!" I never saw it coming!
Rating: Summary: An Amelia fan Review: I have read all of the Amelia books...This book was my favorite in the series before number 12. It is still way up on my list...I loved Amelia's attempts to woo her husband. Loved the absolutely confounding plot. Loved the desolate and exotic locale. Loved the return of one of my favorite minor characters (O'Connell). And most of all LOVED Ramses' letters to his parents. The whole book is worth the 10 or so pages of those. Fans of Peters know that she is famous for dual plots and two sets of villains. However, I can usually spot the crooks long before the end. This remains the only book which surprised me... ...This is one of the best...
Rating: Summary: My First Real Disappointing Amelia Peabody Book Review: I just did not like this book, it just did not have much of a point. Even the usual witty repartee between Amelia and Emerson wasn't enough to salvage this book for me. The whole plot seems pointless with Amelia and Emerson just meandering around Egypt's various famous archaeological sites. As much as I hate to admit it, I really missed Ramses, and that whole England bit was far too boring. Let's hope the next book redeems the series for me.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best So Far Review: I love Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody mysteries! While I enjoyed this book, I believe it would have been a difficult choice had I not read the preceding books in the series. Amelia and Emerson return to the archeological site where they met, however things are more dangerous than ever and the Emersons are constantly in peril. One of the stranger plot twists is Emerson's amnesia and sudden recovery. During his amnesia Amelia's character exhibits emotional depths that are touching but very removed from her general pragmatism. This book was okay, but not my favorite in the series.
