Rating: Summary: Not as good as the others Review: This book was disappointing. If I were not a fan of the series, I probably would have put it down. Holmes and Russell are engaging as always but the mystery is weak and at times boring.
Rating: Summary: More? Review: I was bored, looking for some summer reading, and I am GLAD I found O Jerusalem. Made me go back and buy the first four books in the series. I'm thrilled to have discovered King. Is there going to be more in this series?
Rating: Summary: Great entry in the series! Review: Excellent work by King. Her Sherlock Holmes is right on target, and Russell is having a time of it trying to keep up with him throughout their various adventures in the novel. A wonderful read. I've been a Sherlockian for over 20 years, and enjoy this series very much.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: In order to fully appreciate this book, you should read The Beekeeper's Apprentice first. By the time you finish that one, guaranteed, you will want to read O Jerusalem. It certainly lived up to my expectations. While the overall tone of the book is very different from the rest of the books in this Russell/Holmes series, it is enjoyable and definitely understandable, as the action takes place in, obviously, Jerusalem. Laurie R. King does a very nice job of showing us what Jerusalem was like in 1919, when ethnic tensions ran higher than ever before. Highly recommended for all mystery lovers.
Rating: Summary: Slow start, but perseverence is rewarded Review: For the first one-third of the book, I was tempted several times to put it aside and not finish it. After that, things picked up and it held my interest. By two-thirds of the way through I was so gripped that I had to finish the rest of the book in a single sitting.
Rating: Summary: Interesting, but only because I love Holmes and Russell Review: Oh wouldn't it be wonderfule if the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th books by an author are worthy of the first. I fell in love with Holmes 20 years ago when I read my first Holmes novel. I fell in love again with Holmes and with Mary when I read "The Beekeepers Aprentice". The next two books were very, very good and I hope her next lives up to the first. O Jerusalem, while interesting, was just not up to par.
Rating: Summary: Second only to The Beekeeper's Apprentice Review: I've always wanted to know what exactly happened during the visit to Jerusalem, which was summarized so briefly in "The Beekeeper's Apprentice." This book is definitely a worthy addition to Laurie R. King's Mary Russell series. The relationship between Russell and Holmes is delicious in that most of the sexual tension is not spelled out, but just hinted at. I particularly enjoyed the secondary characters of Ali and Mahmoud, and I'm glad that they will appear in the next Russell book, too.
Rating: Summary: It was alright. Review: The mystery wasn't very strong, like they have been in her past novels. I felt there was a lot of description, and it really didn't seem to focus on them. It was different. Even so, I am looking foreward to her next novel with great anticipation.
Rating: Summary: Excellent read, not quite up to par with BEEKEEPER'S Review: I've been reading along with the Mary Russell books from the beginning, after being intrigued by a review of THE BEEKEEPER'S APPRENTICE, and promptly reading each one of the others as it came out. I have enjoyed every single one of them, though somehow, none of the later books were quite as good as the first, and A LETTER OF MARY was my least favorite of the series. O JERUSALEM has some of the qualities of the first book (e.g. their earlier, non-romantic relationship), but not the spark that made the first one one of my all-time favorite books. The story is a little bit lacking in places, as the author concentrates more on Jerusalem then on the characters. I will always look forward to new books in this series, and wistfully hope with each addition that King will somehow regain that special something.
Rating: Summary: For me, too much historical information. Review: The historical data overpowered the story. It seemed as though the book could be classified non-fiction in that regard.I never had that feeling after reading all Laurie King's previous novels
