Summary: This book is as dull as dishwater.
Review: How sad that the author of the truly wonderful "The Beekeeper's Apprentice" is reduced to writing pedestrian fiction like this. Frankly, none of the books that King has written since "The Beekeeper's Apprentice" has come close to the high level of quality that she achieved with that book. The characters and the plot in "O Jerusalem" are dull and the relationship between Russell and Holmes is extremely underwritten. Gone is the wit and the humor that I loved in the first book of the series. I finished the whole book, but it was a struggle.

Summary: The true (and only) heir to Conan Doyle's Holmes !
Review: Laurie King, the master of mood, setting and adventure, has done it again!

It is refreshing to find a Holmes storyteller that can write a true NOVEL! Ms. King has created a wonderfully complex story that deals with human (Holmes, real at last!) experiences as a sequence of events unfolds in the Holy Land that will change their lives (and ultimately their relationship).

As such, it will not appeal to the type of mind (developed by TV) that wants a straight forward adventure that requires little thought - and that has little relationship to real life. A scan of the neqative reviews for this book will show you what I am talking about!

But if you want a "thinking persons" Holmes, this book is for you! It's waht Conan Doyle would have wrote if he was a better novelist!

CAUTION: You MUST read "THE BEEKEEPER'S APPRENTICE" first to truly understand the relationship between Holmes and Russell at this point in their history - buy both, you won't be disappointed!

Summary: A wonderful mystery
Review: A wonderful mystery that remains true to it's portrayal of the characters. Within the first three pages I was transported to the middle east. Clear, believable descriptions with an extremely captivating plot. Bravo!! Encore!!

Summary: A very enjoyable Russell/Holmes book.
Review: I enjoyed the adventure, the mystery, the interaction between Russell and Holmes, and the historical background.

Summary: does not live up to king's previous efforts
Review: o jerusalem fails to live up the high standards of king's previous works.the book actually doesn't start until page 180 or so.it seems that king has difficulty in arriving at a conclusion, and the one she did decide on was without flair. dullis how i judge o'jerusalem--but i will continue to be a king fan and look forward to her next book. hopefully it will be up to her standards.

Summary: THIS BOOK IS WONDERFUL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: This is the best thing LRK has done yet! I just have to say that I feel sorry for all those purists fans out there who feel so thretened by LRK's books. They can't stand the thought of Holmes having a competent intelegent *female* partner who is also his absolut equall and eventualy becomes his wife. If the books are realy as horible as they say then why do they hate them so much? If they are nothing and soon to be gone why waste the efort to degrade them? An animal in fear lashes out. Just a thought.

The Sorcerer's Aprentice

Summary: The book was marvelously detailed and cleverly plotted.
Review: This was probably my favourite of the Laurie King novels, aside from The Beekeeper's Apprentice. The "travelogue" aspects of the novel noted by another reviewer were there, but I didn't find them tedious at all. They were very interesting and added realism to the story. I've found myself poring over WWI and Jerusalem books, trying to learn more about the events and the ancient city. King's scholarship is a wonderful bonus in the novel, I think, helping to educate me in the most pleasant way. The Holmes/Russell relationship is beautifully developed, too, though I know that Holmes purists find that relationship too difficult to fathom. I'm not a Holmes purist, but rather a lover of Holmes stories, so that anything good that happens to him pleases me. Russell is good for him and he for her, as this novel so delightfully proves.

Summary: A wonderful trek over Sacred Ground!
Review: Sherlockian purists tend to get rather red around the ears when the name Laurie King is mentioned. That is a shame. King is making a whole new generation aware of the great detective through her imaginative series.

In this latest offering, King not only takes us on a trip with the sacred Holmes, but takes us to the most sacred spot on earth, Temple Mount in Jerusalem. She is able to combine travel, history, comedy and mystery all in a menage of both reverence and iconclasm.

Like fine truffles, Laurie King is not for all palates. If you prefer your Holmes simple and unadulterated, you won't like King. If you are game for adventure, you will be rewarded. This winning woman of the cloth is looking forward to more adventures.

Summary: One for lovers of a well-written mystery...
Review: ...Holmesian purists, however, may wish to stay away. As a longtime fan of this series, I've been looking forward to O Jerusalem, and in no way am I disappointed. King's plots are getting better, in my opinion, and her ability to weave interesting characters and setting into her ripping yarn is in top form.

Summary: Great continuation of the Mary Russell series
Review: I enjoyed this book immensely. Laurie R. King is a fabulous writer. Her descriptions are not overlong but always manage to place the reader at the scene (crime or otherwise). Her characterizations are also done realistically and consistently-- this book recounts the lost adventure in 'A Beekeeper's Apprentice'-- and add to my understanding of the events in the other Russell books. In fact, I think I will go and reread this book-- for the third time.
