Summary: An Engaging Debut Novel
Review: I really enjoyed this book. From the characterization to the dry humor, Soft Case kept me turning pages, which is what I expect from a mystery novel.

One thing that stands out about this book is how the ending totally took me by surprise. This is important to a book like this, and the author pulls it off without being obvious about trying to deceive the reader.

Buy this book if you like good, page-turning mysteries. This is an absolute must have for those who like a dose of humor thrown in.

Summary: The Best Murder Mystery I have ever Read
Review: In my opinion this book can be judged by it's cover. You can tell from the moment you see it that it is going to put you in suspense from beginning to end. It is a book that must be bought. John Misak is a young inspiring author that should be made famous. I cant wait to read his next book Time Stand Still. I only expect the best along with everyone else who has read Soft Case.

Summary: Mr. Misak--Find And Editor
Review: Mostly I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and I agree with other readers about the author's sense of humor.

I read 16 reviews here, however, and not one person mentioned it's major irritating flaw: either Mr. Misak occasionally has trouble forming a complete sentence (you know--subject, verb, object, that kind of thing) or the publishers can't afford proof readers and editors. Based upon the other 90% of the book I doubt the former proposition and, based upon www.barclaybooks.com, I'm almost certain of the latter.

This was the worst editing I've ever seen--by a long shot. Sadly, it made it difficult for me to really enjoy the book.

I can only hope that somehow a pre-release book accidentally (what do you think Poisoned Pen?) made its way into the mainstream.

Summary: Soft Case delivers a great read.
Review: Soft Case is full of surprises.
Soft Case has a very realistic feel. It captures the essence of a New York City police detective and the case he investigates with excellent characterization and a strong plot. The story is believable and compelling. I am looking forward to receiving the next book by this author, Time Stand Still.

Summary: Couldn't let such a good book be blasted
Review: Someone here wrote a review about this book, and I just wanted to say I disagree. Soft Case, though not the best book ever written, is highly entertaining and kept me interested from the first to the last page. I thought the premise was fresh, and the dialogue was real. The characters are involved in realistic situations and act like human beings. Nothing about this book is far-fetched, and it reeks of someone who has a knowledge about people.

One thing I have to say is that, though it is serious and tackles some issues, the book is funny. I really laughed at times. John Misak has a nice sense of humor.

I guess it is all a matter of opinion, but if you like stories from this genre, I think you'll find Soft Case to be an entertaining read by a talented author.

Sounds to me like the person who said something bad about it is unpublished, and angry about it.

Summary: Easily identifiable as an author's first novel.
Review: The gushing Amazon.com reviews for Soft Case and Time Stand Still lead me to purchase both. Oops. Soft Case was very disappointing. Right off the bat, the author expects the reader not to question why experienced NYPD homicide detectives are using "suicide by auto accident" as their "working-premise" until they uncover evidence of foul-play (which they hope to find). This seems ludicrous to me. Depending on the circumstances, I (who have never been a homicide detective) would use "auto-accident" as my "working premise" of an "auto-accident", until I uncovered evidence that painted a different picture. After reading the first 4 chapters, I realized that even if I could forgive some weak premise I absolutely could not continue to forgive horribly clumsy dialogue. Without interesting and intelligent dialogue - I cannot force myself to stick around to "see how it ends." If you are an unpublished writer - by this book to encourage yourself at how poor the writing could be in 2001 and still be published.
