Rating: Summary: Loved the Story, Hated the Editing! Review: Quietus is a riveting novel--suspenseful and scary, but not too scary. I can't believe how poorly edited it is though. This author is too good a writer to have been done wrong like this by her editor. Shameful. One example: The heroine goes to the doctor and puts her feet up in the "stir-ups." Enough said.Read the book, but don't bet your English grade on it.
Rating: Summary: Left me with a heavy heart Review: Quietus is full of potential: potential story lines, potential characters, potential writing. But I could not help but be distracted by the lack of editing and proofreading. I felt like I was reading an early draft: it was full of poor grammar, outright mistakes (like 'alright' and 'illusive') and just plain bad writing. With help, Schilling could be a terrific author. I'm amazed that the book made it to press in this condition.
Rating: Summary: A Gothic Masterpiece; one of the year's best thrillers! Review: Schilling's remarkable new thriller is startling and brilliant, and presents unique, new insights into the dark realms of "what lies beyond" our mortal lives. Skillfully balancing religious teachings with a page-turning suspense plot, the author provides a surprising dose of unexpected twists and turns to keep us guessing until the end. This book is likely to become a literary classic, and is highly recommended for all readers.
Rating: Summary: Excellence, quality writing and more... Review: The 400 pages of novel that I was reading yesterday were from Quietus, a novel by Vivian Schilling. Along the lines of Clive Barker's Coldheart Canyon this novel also deals with the sometimes blurry line between the supernatural and "ordinary" reality, yet it also works to change the common perception of angels as soft fluffy things. It's half suspense novel, half action, half supernatural and half nitty gritty reality. Completely compelling, overpowering in the power of its prose and the scope of the plot - it whisks you along and you never stop to notice the hours that have passed...
Rating: Summary: strong suspense Review: The plane heading for Boston crashed in the New Hampshire White Mountains. Rescuers save five survivors including Kylie O'Rourke and her spouse Jack trapped inside the doomed flight. Kylie relates a strange story that just before crashing, she noticed a raven perched on the plane's wing. Kylie also insists that she and the other four survivors were restlessly hiking the mountain though they were found inside the fuselage when they were rescued. No one else who lived to talk about his or her harrowing experience substantiates Kylie's claim. Kylie's psychologist insists what she says she saw and believes happened was caused by post-traumatic stress combined with drug stimulated hallucinations. However, Kylie continues to see a raven with human eyes and turning paranoid insists that the malevolent beings she saw on the mountain are after her while people in good health that she knows start dying. QUIETUS is a strong suspense that has readers resolving questioning whether it is a psychological/medical thriller in which Kylie is losing her mind, a horror tale where the spirit domain has entered the living realm, or a combination of both. The story line is exciting but the wide use of psychological, medicinal, and spiritual elements enhances the audience's perceptual guesses yet slows down the pace of the plot. Still, Kylie is a wonderful lead protagonist walking a thin line between insanity and real danger, which is what makes Vivian Shilling's novel hauntingly work. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: much too long Review: The story drags horribly. Should have been half as long. Author can't keep her facts about historical religion straight, even misspelling the names of Bible books. It is agreeably spooky, and begins well, but I think she fell in love with the atmosphere and couldn't bear to stop writing.
Rating: Summary: Terrific, page-turning story! Review: This book dealt with a subject matter that has always fascinated me, that of Near-death experiences; with characters I really enjoyed and cared about, in a place that I know very well, being from the area, and also educated me on art and religion from centuries past. As well as all this, the story was a thrilling page-turner, that I literally could not put down. My heart beat faster and my pulse was racing as I read. I liked the way Ms. Schilling tied up all her loose ends and made everything fit. I reccomend this book highly. Enjoy! Debbi :)
Rating: Summary: SCARY WITHOUT BEING HORROR Review: THIS BOOK IS NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING AFTER READING VIVIAN SCHILLING'S OTHER WORK. IT WAS MUCH MUCH BETTER!!!
Rating: Summary: great cover, disappointing book Review: This book was a real letdown. I bought it because of the enticing jacket copy and the comparison to Anne Rice, but I wish I'd saved my money. The characters are flat, predictable stereotypes, and the plot is a jumbled mess, combining several strains of myth and religion into an unsavory stew. Worse still, it's full to the brim with typos, misspellings, bad grammar, and malapropisms that a 6th grader would notice. It will probably get made into a movie, hopefully with a better script. I'd wait for that.
Rating: Summary: A Chilling Read Review: This is one of the most gripping and compelling books I've read in a long time. The main character will absolutely haunt you!
