Rating: Summary: Thanks for straightening it out! Review: You know, a lot of mystery and bruhaha has surrounded the group and their lifestyle(s). It is so refreshing to actually read something from an actual member. Sonny sums up everything that I ever had a question about. He says it plain and simple. I've always respected the club for what I thought it was about and now that I know more about it, I respect it even more. Sonny is quite the man, going thru thick and thin with his brothers and, by himself. I wish more people had his courage and mind-set. My hat's (or helmet) off to Sonny for a great book.
Rating: Summary: An American Legend Review: This is an outstanding book and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in motorcycles or the 1960's subculture. Sonny tells it straight up and makes no apologies. Read the book and find out sonny's opinion about Peter Fonda & Easy Rider, Mick Jagger, See what he has to say about Jerry Garcia & Jack Nicholson, it may suprise you. He's no wanna be, he is the real deal and a true American Original. He is as much an American Legend as Jessie James was in his day. He talks alot about motorcycles and its going to really suprise you what he has to say about not only Harleys but Hondas as well, and its going to really suprise you which he thinks is a better bike. Read it and find out. I couldnt put it down. I ride too, but I'm no wanna be either, I have my own opinions, I don't agree with everything Mr. Barger had to say but he's a hero of mine, just like John Wayne. Patriotic to the end.
Rating: Summary: Leader of the Pack Review: The motorcycle club subculture has been an important theme in Hollywood (from The Wild One to Easy Rider) and in recordings (the song, Leader of the Pack). Everyone who sees the Hell's Angels has an opinion about what is going on, yet few have had a first hand relationship with a member. This book gives you a behind-the-scenes look at what it was like for Oakland's leader of the pack, one of the first branches of the Hell's Angels. I grew up in San Bernardino (Berdoo in the book) which was an even earlier branch of the Hell's Angels than was Oakland. Some people I went to high school with joined the Hell's Angels. We all heard many stories about the group, and what went on. We treated these people with extreme caution and gave them a wide berth. The book brings out an ethos of freedom (the open road) combined with a masculine emphasis on being respected and being loyal to friends. At the same time, there is an underlying sense of the frontier marshall, wanting to clean up those who were challenging law and order. Behind that there is a disregard for the rules most of us follow, whether in speed, drugs, theft, or violence. This book is filled with deaths, injuries, and destruction. The Hell's Angels live in a dangerous world, and that doesn't bother them. What would bother them is not following their code of ethics. Having read about all of the things the Hell's Angels are supposed to have done in the last 50 or so years, it is interesting to hear it from the other side. Although you probably won't want to emulate Sonny Barger in too many ways, you'll certainly never forget him. If you love motorcycles (as many of us do), you'll be moved by his loving descriptions of various bikes. He was truly the wild one at the head of the bike pack.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read! Review: I really enjoyed this book because many times I have wondered what the Hell's Angels were really like and what they were about. This book answered my questions in an entertaining and engaging way. The Hell's Angels had such a bad rap for so long but you can see in this book that some of the rap was deserved some was not. This group of men (Unfortunatly no women allowed..well I would never join a club like that ..since I can't ha ha.)would die for eachother and you have to respect their loyatly and brotherhood. I am surprised the author sounded kinda down on Harley Davidson, I always assumed they all LOVED harley's like I do. Learned interesting tid bits.. I wish I could meet him at his book signings but I will be out of town. Cool Book!
Rating: Summary: A great read by someone who lives life on his own terms Review: I loved the book. I thought it was a fascinating look at a world in which a man has lived life on his own terms. I think more people wish they could do that (I know I certainly do). I have read all the books re Hells Angels by Yves Lavigne and after reading Sonny Barger's account I can only conclude the Mr. Lavigne suffers from the "wanna be" syndrome.
Rating: Summary: A biker classic Review: Sonny Barger's new book is a classic for bikers. I was concerned when I ordered the book that Sonny would have to sugar coat some of the events about his life due to legal complications. However, fear not, Sonny Barger tells it like it is. This is a well written, informative book that I could not put down once I started reading it. If you are a biker, a wanna be biker, or just someone with a casual interest, then buy the book. Most people would consider me to be an avid reader and I can tell you I have not been this enthusiastic about a book since I read the God Father many years ago. I hope they select a great actor to play the part of Sonny Barger in the upcoming movie. Without a doubt, this will be the all time classic biker movie.
Rating: Summary: This book was a total letdown Review: I expected some real insight into the Hells Angels motorcycle club. This was the worst book I have ever read. It isn't worth the paper it is written on. I have interest in these one-percenters but I was completely let down after reading it. Don't waste your money. Read Tony Tait's book instead.
Rating: Summary: Hells Angels Review: I was born in Oakland California in 1940. I saw the Angels around 1958, when I was working as a custom auto painter/pinstriper. The club was a small group of "very real" guys who had the first "Choppers". I painted and pinstriped several of the clubs "Bikes" and got to know some of the members, along with Ralph (Sonny). This was one group that wasn't going to change to the so called "modern world", yet Ralph was very hip to the latest ways. He also studied the ways of several world leaders, and learned from their mistakes. (my own observation). The book was very well written for the subject matter, and shows a lot of the personal life of a very dedicated person. The so-called "Blood & Guts" of the book was mild compared to some of the things that man has created. The Angels believed in one thing, "Don't screw with us and we won't bother you." Once you have read the "Good Parts," you will find that there is a real "inner depth' to the club and it's Chief. I have written my autobiography "It Ain't Gonna Work" which clearly shows that many of us have traveled down the same path.
