Summary: Couldn't Put It Down--Highest Recommendation
Review: This book covers the formation of the Delta Force and Haney's service in it until his retirement. It even contains a post-9/11 epilogue which casts an informed light on why that happened and what we're facing moving forward.

You'd think the early stuff about the selection process and/or training for Delta Force would be what you'd want to skip before you made it to the war stories, but that is not the case. It's a fascinating look into a bunch of super-elite soldiers who only wanted the best of the best in their units, and their unorthodox methods of training and selecting them.

Once the unit is formed and it's time for real-life application, Haney gives you some fascinating stories about Beirut (total madness), Grenada (much harrier than you think), Central America (what a mess) and a pretty disturbing story about American POWs in Vietnam who were left to die--even though our government knew about them--because it was the politcally expedient thing to do.
Haney was also on the failed mission to Iran to rescue the hostages; what's so surprising about that tale is how everybody thought it would have been successful had it not been for that horrific crash.

After reading this, you'll have a much better understanding of this shadowy unit, and why they're going to be front and center in this War on Terror.

Summary: A MUST READ!!!!!
Review: This is a must have book for anyone interested in books of military subjects!! I give it 10 stars! CSM Haney takes you into the world of the secret and elite Army Delta Force like no one else could. You are given a taste of what these brave soldiers go through from selection to missions and CSM Haney leaves you begging for more! I couldn't put this book down! If you haven't read this book than you are missing out on one, if not, the best military book written by someone who was there and braved it through to the end. I just wish that we had more folks like CSM Haney in the service. He is a true American hero!

Summary: Missed his calling?
Review: To suggest that the good Sergeant Major missed is calling as a writer may be a little exaggerated, but it would only be to illustrated how well this book is crafted. I was gripped from the first page when he described an airborne jump so accurately, I had flashbacks to Airborne school. Soldier or civilian, if you are interested in the Army or any kind of military special operations, get this book. CSM Haney, your wonderful book reflects great credit upon you, Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta and the United States Army!

Summary: EXCELLENT INSIDER'S PERSPECTIVE!
Review: None of the hype and no observer's "opinions" on the SFOD-D Selection Process, Training Regimen and Unit History. Just an "inside the head" account of one of the original men selected to serve as an Operator in the Delta Force. Unique in that the narrative is nearly a moment by moment account of the grueling selection process coupled with all the details able to be printed about the first decade or so of missions. Colonel Beckwith's dreams and vision of the Unit have all come true and likely exceeded any of his wildest imaginations. Haney's distaste for the inter-agency rivalry and the condemnation of the CIA and American interests involved with Vietnam MIA/POWs in Laos was chilling. Excellent read-finished it in 3 days!!

Summary: A Bit Exagerated
Review: While this book offers some interesting stories about Eric Hainey's experiences in Delta, one must wonder why he is the only Delta member to write a book about Delta. I am close friends with two founding members who knew and worked with Hainey, and according to their accounts, some of the stories were a bit exagerated. Furthermore, many of Hainey's compatriots have eschewed repeated book offers based strictly on principal - regardless of the huge sums of money being offered them. They did not do it for the money then, nor would they tell about it for money now. So what's different about Hainey from his peers?
For someone who does not know much about Special Ops, this book is an interesting read. Otherwise, the only thing that kept me in it was a few of his stories, albeit dressed up as they may be.

Summary: Buy it now
Review: Yes, great book. Very interesting. Helps one to understand how the whole thing works, which is good. A lot of books try and fail at that. Made me appreciate even more the US armed forces and the freedom they protect. Get with it and get the book.

Summary: Enjoyed this book
Review: I've read many military/war books and I can say that I really enjoyed this one. The author has a very easy-to-read writing style. With other military books I've read, some authors feel that they have to list every soldier/rank they encountered. It can get confusing. Not so with this book.

Every part of this book is great from the Selection process on through the individual conflicts that he was involved with.

It's a must read.

Summary: Hard to put down
Review: This book reveals Haney to be a great soldier, writer, and American. As others have stated this book documents Haney's military life beginning with his invitation and selection for Delta Force during the early years of the force's existence. The first half of the book is Haney's description of how he made it through selection for Delta Force. His narrative style makes you feel like you're inside his head, and his cool, logical temperment reveals itself as the obvious mindset required of a successful Delta Force member. His writing is also humorous, and I laughed out loud at some of the tactics of the lesser selection candidates who were doomed to fail.

The 2nd half of the book is allocated to some of the missions Haney and others were involved in during his years in Delta Force. Unfortunately, this half of the book is not quite as compelling as the first. I assume it is because he is forced to leave out details of operations that would reveal tactics of SFOD. I respect the writer's need to do so, however, this prevents him from giving you a blow by blow account of how he thought through accomplishing a particular mission...just the insight in the first half of the book that made it so compelling. Nevertheless, Haney still keeps it interesting and entertaining. He reveals some of the conflict that occurs between different ranks and forces within the military. Ironically, he questions some of the motives and dealings of government organizations like the CIA, yet at the end of the book he states that our government is above commiting atrocities in the world. I guess Haney realizes no government is perfect, and that taken as a whole, our's is as good or better than any other.

Bottom line is, after reading this book you are left with a sense of awe at the bravery and dedication to country that is evident in Command Sgt. Maj. Haney.

Summary: Could not put it down
Review: I thought this mans life was inspiring. His creed of never quit applies to all of us. This mans dedication to his country touched me along with the dedication of the Rangers, Marines, and Delta. He clearly outlines the sacrafices of battle. His account of the Granada invasion was done very well. The final test against the FBI in D.C. was terrific. Now I will be looking for chalk marks on sidewalks

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Great Read, But Don't Expect Too Many Details...
Review: I enjoyed this book, CSM Haney does a great job of taking me into the world of Delta Force without having to sacrifice OPSEC(That's Operational Security for you Civilians). He tells a great story about what life in the Military is like, as well as his time as an Elite Delta Commando, even for someone who's never worn the uniform. As a non active duty United States Marine, I felt that CSM Haney wrote a great book about the secret Warriors all Americans should be proud of.
