Rating: Summary: Great Resource Review: This book is great! My current goal is to find where and how to apply for federal law enforcement jobs. After being in the military I'm very careful to get the paperwork right. That's usually one of the biggest stumbling blocks when dealing with the government. This book is big on the application process and application. A friend in the DEA told me if your application isn't done just right you don't have much of a chance. The book has a lot of job and agency listings that I never found looking at the library and the internet. They're all set up with the same information so they're easy to compare from agency to agency. After reading it I found 3 job federal positions that I never knew existed. That's 3 more applications going out next week.
Rating: Summary: Well organized book is above the rest -- a masterpiece! Review: This book is not only the most up-to-date book available on the subject, it is also the most comprehensive reference ever compliled for federal law enforcement job-seekers. Those looking for an edge on the competition will learn not only about more than 200 careers in a variety of disciplines, but also how to stand out from the crowd during federal job application processes. The chapter on training programs is also very informative. Anyone who is serious about getting into the feds should pick up a copy of this book before picking up a job application.
Rating: Summary: Completely out of date Review: This book offers very little if anything at this point and sounds comical at times referring to, "The Information Super Highway" a/k/a Internet and referencing positions that no longer exist.
Rating: Summary: Basic resource- redundant internet info Review: This is a very good book if you are just starting out and need to find out the official (practically a cut and paste job) version on what's out there. If you want original or insider descriptions of what the jobs are really like or real advice on getting a Federal law enforcement job, then this book will be a disappointment. A vast majority of the information is available on the internet. The job descriptions are not original, but almost, if not entirely, taken from the official web sites or vacancy announcements. The various "fast track" hiring programs are also well documented on the internet. In other words, if you want a book that has gone out and done the leg work for you in compiling all the basic, official information available on the internet, this book had done a comprehensive job and is the one you want. If you have already read the stuff available on the ".gov" sites concerning the concept of the Federal hiring process and what the vacancy announcements and their descriptions have to say, then this book adds little and you should look elsewhere.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely the best! Review: This is absolutely the best book on finding and landing careers in federal law enforcement. I have been a federal law enforcement officer for almost twenty years, and I didn't know that most of the positions profiled in this book were out there. The author also does a masterful job at explaining how to succeed in the application process, including the terminology to use on application forms and how to handle personal interviews. This is a tremendous resource for job applicants and veteran law enforcement officers alike.
Rating: Summary: THE most up-to-date reference Review: This is an outstanding book! You will not find a more comprehensive and up-to-date reference anywhere. Only two of the 225 positions have changed since the book was published, and in these cases they are exactly the same but the agencies have been renamed recently. Agencies change and merge all the time, and no other book even comes close to being this current. It is very well-written and organized, and tells you exactly what you need to do to beat out the competition and get hired!
Rating: Summary: This is your best shot at federal law enforcement. Review: This is the Bible of federal law enforcement career books. If you have not read it you don't know what you've been missing, including information on more than 100 agencies that most people never knew existed. If you follow Ackerman's suggestions on writing KSA statements and filling out application forms you will be on the road to a federal law enforcement career.
Rating: Summary: A must read for all future law enforcement Review: What a great tool for anyone entering the field of law enforcement! I highly recommend that you also read U.S. Customs, Badge of Dishonor!
