Rating: Summary: Why deny Mary's grace? Review: According to the NAB, Luke 1:28 translates as, "And coming to her, he said, 'Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.'" Other translations state, "Hail, full of grace. The Lord is with you." Why deny Mary's grace? Is this just to appease Protestants who already deny that the Hail Mary is biblical? Since we are dealing with the Holy Word, this does not seem like a good enough reason to change a perfectly good passage.
Rating: Summary: Extraordinary Accuracy Review: All Cristians should study this Bible (Catholics and non-Catholics). I work as an attorney, not as a theologian or as a linguist. I am a non-denominational Christian (former Catholic). Through an intensive study and comparison of various bible translations on the internet (see www.bible.org/public/readme.htm & www.ccel.org/wwsb) I have made the regrettable discovery that various translations have added to, subtracted from, and distorted the original Greek and Hebrew manuscripts to support the theology of the translators. I have seen no such effort from the translators of the NAB. Imagine my amazement, as a non-Catholic, to discover that the most accurate bible I can find was written by Catholic Bishops. Good on them! For those of us who believe in sola scriptura, an accurate translation of the Word of God is the most important possession in all the world. So far as I can see, the Bishops have diligently avoided the temptation to infuse the NAB with questionable interpretations supportive of Catholic theology. Let the Word of God say what it says, and let all doctrines stand or fall on that accurate Word. I give my heartfelt thanks to the translators of the NAB. I have absolute faith that God will bless both you and your efforts and that the NAB will help to bring many lost souls to salvation. May God bless you and your continued efforts.

Rating: Summary: LARGE PRINT IT A`INT Review: I already have a medium sized Saint Joseph edition. When I saw LARGE PRINT that is what I wanted. While my eyesight is quite good I enjoy the large print format as it is easier on the orbs. I subscribe to the positive minded magazine GUIDEPOSTS which offers a LARGE PRINT edition and have purchased a number of large print offerings . So I was disappointed when the term large print simply meant exactly the identical medium sized edition I have sans the "leather "cover . I want my money back. Incidently the contents are excellent .

Rating: Summary: A great general purpose catholic bible Review: I can not add much to what has already been said. This is the Bible that the majority of "average" American Catholics are exposed to. This edition has all that anyone could want or need in a Bible. Attractive cover, plenty of intro's and explanatory notes. Handy size. Just an all around great general purpose Bible. If I could choose only one bible of all that are out there, this is the one.
Rating: Summary: How On Earth Did They Convince Anyone To Worship El? Review: I'm on my own self-directed study of world religions. I decided to start by reading the Christian Bible. I did a little research to find out what version was considered the most accurate.I found out that the version that is considered the most accurate translation is this one so I decided to read this version. So far all El, better known as Yahweh of Jehovah, has done, is to punish everybody! And talk about sexist! Unless brute force was used I can't imagine any wombon of that period voluntarily joining a religion that holds us in such low regard! The most blatant example of that so far is the story of Abram being a pimp for his wife! And who does El decide to punish this? Not Abram or even Sarai, but the innocent bystander, Pharoh. I would excpect a god to be a little more logical and just! I'll be updating this review as I read more of this particular mythology.

Rating: Summary: Blatantly Heretical Review: It is a twice defined dogma of Catholic faith (Trent and Vatican I) that God wrote the Bible. This is the Catholic Church's infallible and irreformable definition of what biblical inspiration means. Pope Leo XIII, in Providentissimus Deus, made the obvious observation that anyone who accuses the Bible of error, of any sort, moral or factual, must necessarily either deny the Catholic dogma of the nature of biblical inspiration, or make God the author of error. Both alternatives are heretical. Hence, it is Catholic dogma that the Bible is free from all error.
The New American Bible accuses the Bible of error constantly. The conquest of the Caananites was a moral atrocity; Jesus couldn't predict the future; there are contradictions all over the place; Daniel's "prophecy" was just a creative summary of events which already happened; St. John put word's into Jesus' mouth with impunity; etc. The NAB is full of faith-destroying outrages against orthodox belief. And in four instances that I have detected so far, it deliberately mistranslates the text of Scripture in order to place errors therein. The New American Bible is spiritually dangerous to read, and a near occassion for sin. I have catalogued this in some detail in my study at Catholic Apologetics International. You will find it next to the picture of Satan on the CAI homepage.
Rating: Summary: The Most Faithful (pardon the pun!) Bible Ever! Review: Of the many changes and reforms that came about as a result of the Second Vatican Council, some of those that were most readily apparent to the Catholic Faithful were the order for Masses and the Liturgy to be conducted in the vernacular (the local language) rather than in Latin, and the increased emphasis placed on the reading and study of the Holy Scriptures. In carrying out these reforms, American Catholic scholars recognized the need for a new, more faithful translation of the Bible. Previous Catholic Bibles had been based on the Latin Vulgate, written by St. Jerome. With the New American Bible, the translators went back to the original Hebrew and Greek writings to be as accurate to the meanings of the authors as is possible in a translation. The result is a marvelously faithful, clear, concise and, perhaps most importantly, unbiased translation that has been of immense value not just to Catholics, but to Christians of every denomination and non-Christian scholars as well. A further advantage of the NAB is that the Liturgy of the Church, the traditional Catholic book of daily prayers, was revised and re-written to be based on the NAB. This means that scriptural passages contained in the Liturgy will appear the same as they do in your own Bible, facilitating personal Bible study. Appreciation of the NAB's accuracy and easy language is not limited only to Christian study. The Bible is a primary source for knowledge of ancient history, especially when compared to the records of other cultures from the same period, and here the unbiased, faithful translation of ancient texts is most useful. Whether a you are a Christian of any denomination, a student of ancient history, or a student of literature wishing to read the stories which so much of our western culture is based on, the New American Bible will be by far the most useful translation of the Bible for you.
