Rating: Summary: Great value Review: Probably the best value in "study" bibles out there. Nice font size, typesetting, and its a sturdy cloth-bound hardcover. This edition has as many notes (if not more), maps, cross-references and other useful features then books twice and thrice the price don't have. I would recommend this edition to anyone interested in the Bible, Catholic or not, as a great mix of study and inspirational reading. FYI - This is the exact same edition that the Abbey of Genesee monks in Piffard NY provide in all the rooms at their retreat house, if that says anything.
Rating: Summary: Hard to get the best of both worlds... Review: The commentator in my previous Bible was a dispensationalist, and a zealous believer in justification by faith alone. In short, he was theologically out of his mind. So, I switched to this Bible. And it is a significant improvement. The commentary is theologically sound, it doesn't relate every other verse to the millenial kingdom, and its explanations of the nuances of the Hebrew text are quite helpful. The translation is excellent, and the deuterocanonicals are right where they should be. The pictures are beautiful as well. But the one thing that irks me about this Bible, a problem totally absent from my previous copy, is how the commentators present liberal dates for the authorship of the books as fact, while in reality those dates are still hotly debated. For example, they state, as fact, that Daniel was written during the reign of Antiochus Epiphanus between 167 and 164 B.C. The book loses so much prophetic force if you admit such a late date! Suddenly, Daniel's incredibly accurate prediction of history is reduced to a summary of events which have already transpired. Now, if the internal and external evidence pointed clearly to this late date of authorship, I would of course accept it. But I think a good case can be made for the early date. So, in summary, I guess my advice would be to buy this Bible for it's great translation and its helpful commentary, but to take all the liberal historical criticism with a grain of salt. Maybe in Robert Sungenis' Catholic Apologetics Study Bible I will finally be able to find good Catholic commentary and conservative scholarship in the same package.
Rating: Summary: Simply the Best Review: The Saint Joseph Edition of the New American Bible is THE first choice for those who use the NAB as their translation of choice. It is beautifully printed, with a clear and bold font. In contains all the notes and commentary of the NAB which were produced by the translator's themselves. Although it is a Catholic Bible it rarely, if ever reveals a Catholic bias. Non-Catholics will also find this volume extremely useful because it contains some of the most penetrating and insightful commentary of any Study Bible on the market. As far as translation is concerned: the NAB is perhaps the finest literal translation of the Bible made over the past 100 years.
Rating: Summary: a beautiful Bible! Review: This edition of the Bible is lovely with pictures and devotions for The Stations of the Cross and all the mysteries of the Rosary and many Bible helps. Very nice!
Rating: Summary: An excellent Bible! Review: This is a good Bible for Catholics and even non-Catholics, such as myself. The translation itself (NAB) is solid and on the conservative side, although some of the wording seems a bit bland at times. The notes are an important part of the text, and are fairly ecumenical, although at some points Catholic theology is present (after all this is a Catholic Bible). The St. Joseph edition includes illustrations, a Bible dictionary, and the cycle of readings for Sunday Mass. The low price is another plus. I highly recommend this Bible.
Rating: Summary: The Best NAB package out there Review: This St. Joseph New American Bible is one of the best. The reasons? A clear and scholarly translation, inclusion of the apocrypha, countless notes and maps, a section of church terms (and reading calendar), and many other side features. The binding of the Bible is very sturdy imitation leather and the glossy box makes a great storage case. The text contains various full color pictures interwoven into it. A very useful, but incredibly inexpensive package. I don't think there is a better Bible for the price out there. I use it quite a bit and I am not even Catholic.
