Rating: Summary: Kosher by Design by Susie Fishbein Review: A beauty of this book is that the author takes the time to
explain the religious significance of the meals, as well as
the formal preparatory steps for each dish. Meal preparations have significance depending upon the locality. For instance,
Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are celebrated on the same
day in Israel. Shmini Atzeret is significant because it is a
private moment of oneness between G-d and the Jewish people.
Special preparations for Simchat Torah include chicken,
endive salad, roasted veal with mushrooms and oriental spinach
salad. Other popular dishes are roasted garlic and potato soup
and sweet pea kreplach. A popular Rosh Hashanah menu consists of
gefilte fish, spinach rice and chicken. Porcini mushroom and
onion soup is another popular dish.
This volume is an excellent purchase for the price charged.
It will be invaluable for preparing formal Kosher dishes.
A strength of the work is that the author depicts full-color
pictures of the various meal preparations. This book would be
very useful for cooks, international meal preparations,
Middle Eastern food enthusiasts, tour planners and a whole
host of professionals interested in the details of fine Kosher
cooking.
Rating: Summary: Some criticism allowed? Review: Am I the only critical owner of this book? The pictures and layout are indeed stunning, but I found when I tried to produce the recipes many were overly sweet (chocolate pecan pie) or rich, and contained many very fattening additive rich ingredients.
Rating: Summary: The Perfect Companion For Your Holiday and Every Day Meals Review: Hurray for Susie Fishbein! Thank you so much!Kosher by Design is a masterpiece! It is so beautiful, the illustrations, if the book was not so practical, I would suggest to place it in a display case in a museum. The recipe's, the illustrations, the presentation are all first class. And at the same time, it is all presented in a user-friendly format that will assist you in preparing for your Holiday Meals. Thankfully, many of these holidays come once a year because if they didn't your holiday family and friends would be knocking at the door each evening demanding another encore performance. But this book just keeps on giving/helping every day. I bought multiple copies to give as gifts as well. Hope you have a much joy with this cookbook as I am having!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Great, simple recipes Review: I loved the photos, and I enjoyed the writing about the cultural significance of the Jewish holidays (I'm not Jewish, but I was buying a gift for a Jewish friend). But what I really liked was that I was able to prepare one of the desserts, and it looked like the photo! The marble fudge cookies were easy to make and looked great. They were very tasty, too!!
Rating: Summary: best cookbook around! Review: I received this book as a gift. It is so beautiful that I browsed through it a couple of times before I actually picked it up to find something to cook! Of the recipes I tested and tasted: Sesame Noodles (I made it without the chicken, and it was a yummy side dish - no leftovers there!!), Lemon Bundt Cake (nice, but not "wow"), Chocolate Pecan Pie (now here's a great find - for all those pecan pie lovers out there, who think the traditional recipe is a drop too rich and sweet, here's one for you!! The chocolate adds the right touch to balance the sweetness in this recipe! Still is great with a cup of milk, but it won't leave you nauseous like regular pecan pie!), and the Challah Napkin Rings came out beautiful and tasty! I'm planning my Shavuos menu now - first on the list are the Baby Blintzes, of course! (One look at the picture and I knew I have to make it!)
Rating: Summary: Impressed by cookbook Review: I was skeptical about getting this book - just because a book has great pictures in it doesn't mean that the recipes are any good. This book is different. I haven't made a recipe yet that I didn't like. It also turns out exactly as pictured in the book. (I just made the white and dark chocolate mousse dessert and it looks incredible!) My sister-in-law told me that my Sunken Apple and Honey cake looks so good it should be pictured on the cover of a magazine! I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: FANTASTIC!! Review: Once again, Susie Fishbein has proven to be the Queen of Kosher! This is a must have for every kitchen.. no longer will you wonder about what you should make for the holidays. Treat yourself, your mother-in-law, or that new bride to this fabulous cookbook. The pictures, descriptions and helpful hints are just great. Get it and be happy! Enjoy!!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Cookbook! Review: Since I enjoyed "The Kosher Palette" Immensely I was eager to get my hands on this book. It more than fulfilled my expectations. I own over 50 cookbooks and have studied many many more both kosher and not kosher from my local library. I have found some cookbooks with good recipes and some that are well written and organized. This cookbook is both. The recipes are excellent and clearly written. The photos and layout are beautiful. It is truly a work of art both in a visual and gastronomical sense.

Rating: Summary: A Modern Magnificently Mouthwatering Cookbook for everyone! Review: Susie Fishbein has done it again! If you thought Kosher Palette was it, then you must think twice as Kosher by Design is on top of the world. Gourmet, deliciously appealing mouth watering recipes that are easy as 1-2-3 to make. This is a perfect gift for your Wife, Mother, Mother-in-law, Grandma, etc. My own mother hasn't cooked in over 15 years, so I thought I would send this magnificent and beautifully designed cookbook to her. You wouldnt believe it, but she is now going to remodel her entire kitchen! She loves cooking again and my father is ecstatic. If that doesn't say enough about this then I don't know what does.
