That along with some of the recipes in Susie's book helped make our Passover dinner the most tasteful and enjoyable ever. The pictures and the easy recipes made the cooking of it a family affair. Rating: Summary: Gorgeous book, but some recipes lack clarity Review: This book is absolutely gorgeous - and would be perfect were it not for the fact that recipes are not always clear. For example, the recipe for Vegetarian Cholent says to add water to reach top of crockpot - but crockpots come in a variety of sizes, so this could turn out very watery and bland if using a much larger pot than the author's. Surely the recipe should either state what size crockpot the author uses, or mention the amount of water she adds, so those of us with different-sized crockpots can make necessary adjustments.
Likewise, it would have been helpful if the recipe gave a hint as to how many people it serves. Neither cholent recipe bothered to mention that.
Rating: Summary: Some criticism allowed? Review: This book is great for someone who wants to kick up to notches on your daily meals. I used scalloped potato recipe for the first time for Rosh Hashanah this year, and it turned out to be great. Everyone really enjoyed and I'm buying a copy for a gift.Another one that I tried was asparagus with pecan but it wasn't a hit as the potato..
Rating: Summary: Wonderful cookbook with one major drawback Review: What is wonderful about this cookbook is that is marries the rich tradition of the Jewish faith with beautiful descriptions, photos and table layouts. It's like a history, interior design and cookbook all rolled into one. I've made many recipes already and all of them were a hit. My favorites so far are the bread machine challah, pot roast, emerald soup, caramelized carrots and praline strips.
What is not so wonderful are the recipes that call for veal. One of the wonderful hallmarks of Judaism is that it mandates the humane treatments of animals. The cruelty and abuse of the veal calves is, in my opinion, an affront to this teaching. I hope that Ms. Fishbein refrains from using veal in any future cookbooks so that the beauty of being jewish will truly shine through.
Rating: Summary: The Perfect Gift Review: When looking for a gift for my jewish friend, I came across this cookbook with it's eyecatching pictures, along with it's clear explanation of the holidays and their meanings. This convinced me that this was the perfect gift for her. The look of surprise and delight on my friends face when I gave it to her confirmed what I had thought when I first spotted it. I know she will enjoy it for years to come. I would recommend this book to anyone who is in need of a gift for a friend, family member or anyone who likes to cook.
